Introduction

There are various types of communication like face-face communication, written communication, electronic communication, and nonverbal
communication. Certain circumstances require that we use specific communication channel to relay the correct information. This will ensure that
the messages are not lost or misinterpreted. Conflict is “a process that begins when one party perceives another party has, or is about to negatively
affect, something the first party cares about” (Robbins & Judge, 2013). In Week three, the members of team B took part in three different
storybook workshops that simulated the different communication management scenarios and conflict resolution. In this paper, Team B will
analyze the different communication barriers and conflict resolution from the storybooks and share similar personal experiences.

Filtering

After reviewing the first Storybook, we realized filtering can be a destructive communication barrier when attempting to resolve a problem. When
a team member is being vague and trying to spin bad news to sound more positive, as a group, we remind them to be honest and direct with the
information, and that admitting to a problem is the first step to solving it. This scenario reminded one of our team members of their first staff
meeting in the Cardiothoracic ICU. During this meeting, the new members were asked about the orientation process. The new members replied
vaguely and tried to sound positive because they were afraid of upsetting the manager. After the meeting, she spoke with the new members about
being honest with the manager and coming up with suggestions to making the unit friendlier for new recruits. As a result, the next group of
recruits had a more productive experience based on these changes.

Silence

Managers must never ignore silence from their employees. Managers will lack information and will not be able to understand ongoing issues if
their employees remain silent. Silence will not resolve issues such as discrimination, harassment, corruption, and misconduct as upper
management will not be aware of these issues. “Silence is less likely where minority opinions are treated with respect, workgroup identification is
high, and high procedural justice prevails” (Robbins & Judge, 2013). Team B agrees that managers must be supportive of those employees who
voice different opinions and concerns, and must never belittle their concerns. One of our team members always makes it a point to reinforce the
message to his project team at every project kickoff to bring forth any issues or concerns immediately, so that they could be resolved immediately.

Conclusion

Effective communication is absolutely vital, and most organizational problems stem from, or are escalated due to ineffective communication. We
learned about the elements that interfere with effective communication. We learned that when the line of communication is blurred, or not
communicated well, there is the propensity for conflict to arise. As a team we found that it was also important to be able to describe effective
collaboration and conflict management within groups and teams. When conflicts arise in the workplace the leader must review the conflict
process to ascertain exactly what kind of conflict is in play. We must always remember it is vital for leaders and managers to understand conflict
dynamics and be able to use the principles of conflict management and negotiation. We often hear people say, “It was a communication problem.”
In the history of organizations, it has never been more important for organizations to have effective communication throughout the organization.
Great managers and leaders are also great communicators. They have an understanding of the communication process and how it can be derailed.
