Moving Safety

Our Safety Metrics
As we continue to move safety forward, we are tracking our safety outcomes and sharing the
results with our employees. We take every opportunity to examine our safety processes and
make the necessary changes to take our performance to the next level.

Forward

Our journey towards world-class safety

We believe risky behaviors are precursors to accidents and injuries.
That’s why we preform an average of 169 safety observations per day,
helping us predict and prevent incidents.
Our Carolinas service technicians have had just 3 OSHA recordable
incidents since 2011—putting our injury rate at less than half of the
industry average.
Our technicians in the Carolinas record and correct an average of
27 at-risk behaviors per month, identifying potential problems before
anyone is injured.

Safety
at McKenney’s
As one of our corporate values, our goal is to provide a safe and healthy work environment
for our employees and our customers. We do this by carrying out our mission to:
Build a partnership with our employees, customers and business associates
that empowers them all with the ability to do their jobs safely.
We recognize that customer participation is essential in building this partnership, and
a mutual trust that safety is a top priority for the entire project team is at its center.
Together, we’re helping contribute to our customers’ efforts to make their own environments
safer overall.

Our Approach
Methods

&

Our approach to safety is focused on People, Materials and Environment—the three
main areas in which we find dynamic hazards, or the ever-changing risks that can
greatly impact our everyday routines. Here are some of the steps we’re taking
in each area that are supporting us in our journey to move safety forward:
PEOPLE  Keeping people safe is at the heart of our safety
culture, and proper training and leadership are key to
achieving that goal. We provide continuous safety training
for all our employees, including account managers, dispatch,
office staff and technicians, and we have a dedicated team
of safety p rofessionals that can provide support to manage
facility safety.

Connecting Safety to Quality
Over the past two decades, world-class companies have experienced success when
making the connection between safety and quality. With that in mind, we’ve added planning
processes, new technologies and root cause analyses of incidents and near-misses to
continue building the safety-quality connection.

Safety incidents can happen anywhere, so we provide continuous
technician training to help ensure they aren’t occurring during our service
calls. Our technicians are trained to:
1. Wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
2. Keep the service area clean and free of debris
3. Conduct jobsite hazard analyses (JHAs)
4. Be aware of unsafe conditions, even pre-existing ones at the facility

MATERIALS  Performing work safely and at the highest level
of quality requires the right tools and equipment in working
order. That’s why we use only the best tools and equipment
during all our service calls and conduct JHAs to provide
our technicians with training and protocols for the most
commonly used tools and equipment.
ENVIRONMENT  To help manage the physical environment
around each of our technicians, we’ve put technology to
work for us. We’re using a digital safety-data gathering tool
to observe, report, eliminate and track “at-risk” behaviors
and site conditions during all our service calls. We also
work with industry partners to share best practices, provide
support and benchmark safety outcomes.

5. Stop work when critical, life-threatening safety issues are present and take
appropriate steps to get these issues corrected before starting work again
