3. The reason we choose these two places is to grasp new approaches and gain expertise in the career of early childhood education. Furthermore, National Institute of Education would be an appropriate place as each of us will be able to gain plenty of lore and information about the curriculum and administration of various Early Childhood Education programs. Moreover, La Petite Montessori School is said to be the centerpiece of this trip as we could learn numerous approaches in class management. 4. Another rationale that we choose Singapore as our destination is the cheaper expenditure on accommodation and transportation compare to other countries. So, these two destinations become our ideal choice for our educational trip. 5. We would appreciate if we are given the opportunity to organize this educational trip which will bring a lot of advantages for every trainee teachers who participate. We keep our fingers crossed and hoping that Datin will approve our request for the educational trip to Singapore. With this, I attach the working paper for the study tour. Thank you.

INSTITUT PENDIDIKAN GURU KAMPUS BAHASA MELAYU, 59990 KUALA LUMPUR. EDUCATIONAL TRIP TO SINGAPORE 11 SEPTEMBER 2013 TO 13 SEPTEMBER 2013

1.0 Introduction The Students’ Board of Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Bahasa Melayu (IPG KBM) is planning an educational trip to the Singapore. This educational trip is a part of the enrichment programme for preschool trainee teachers of Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Bahasa Melayu. It is open for all of the preschool trainee teachers in Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Bahasa Melayu in order to gain the knowledge and widen the view of trainee teachers.

2.0 Objective By the end of the educational trip, trainee teachers will be able to: a. Identify the distinctive characteristics of Early Childhood Education programmes. b. Gain insights on the curriculum and administration of these Early Childhood Education programmes. c. Experience an immersion into of school system and culture in Early Childhood Education programmes.

3.0 Rationales for Choosing the Place Early Childhood and Special Needs Education in National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore is concerned with two broad areas in teacher education, namely, Early Childhood and Special Education. Both programmes are concerned with understanding the emotional, social and behavioural problems of children, and with providing meaningful and relevant educational programmes and experiences to help them adapt to school and later on, to society at large. Meanwhile, La Petite Montessori School is a unique place where children can develop independence, self-confidence and motivation that are vital to personal and academic success. As Maria Montessori, the developer of Montessori Programs said, the greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, “The children are now working as if I did not exist”. La Petite Montessori School 8

offers children a nursery school program tailored to their individual needs. Every child is nurtured to enable intellectual, social and cultural development. Therefore, it will bring many benefits and advantages for the participants. So, the Students’ Board plans to organize this beneficial and useful trip for trainee teachers so that they gain knowledge and experiences through this educational trip to help them in their studies and their jobs in the future.

Reflective Report

I felt glad because I had finally finished my assignment. In the PISMP English Language Proficiency III courses, we were required to complete a task about organized an educational trip abroad. Before starting the task, we had held a discussion session to select a common place that can benefit the students. These was because, we realized that this task needed the cooperation from all the group members. After obtained the necessary information from my group members, we were able to organize an educational trip to Singapore. From the task given in this coursework, I felt that it was a very meaningful task. This was because the task can train us to think and plan the itinerary about the trip. This can ensure the trip carried out smoothly. Furthermore, the task also can inculcate teamwork spirit among the group members. This spirit can help us to finish the task on time. In the process of doing this coursework task, I felt that it was very interesting and challenging. This was because the task required us to prepare a working paper and a formal letter of approval to the Director of IPG Kampus Bahasa Melayu. So, we needed to explore a lot of relevant information from different sources and materials such as magazines, books, internet and others. The information that we obtained helped us overcome many task problems, such as financial problem, transportation, accommodation, food and drinks and the others. This matter was very important in the process of completing an effective working paper. After finished the task, I felt that this task was a good learning experience. I had got a lot of new experiences, such as how to produce a standard working paper and formal letter. I had never done a working paper before. Therefore, I tried to get the guidance from my lecturer and friends who are smart in writing working paper. With their guidance, I was able to master the tactic in completing a standard working paper. Besides, I also learnt how to organize an educational trip for my students in the future. Besides, I found that the strategy to convince the director to approve our educational trip plan was also very important. Therefore, we tried our best to find a suitable and meaningful place that can bring benefits and advantages to the preschool trainee teachers. Finally, we decided to organize an educational trip to Singapore. Early Childhood and Special Needs Education in National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University, and La Petite Montessori School are both situated in Singapore. These places can provide an overview of early childhood education to the preschool teacher trainees. When completing the task, I had learnt the way to obtain information. The information that I obtained helped us in completing the

17

working paper and formal letter. Besides, I also learnt that we should write the proposed duration of the trip in details so that the trips can be organized successfully. Last but not least, I would like to suggest for students who work on this task in the future to read or obtain necessary information from various reading material. The more the student read, the more information would be gained. This will enable the students had different view about the information that had obtained. Besides, the students also need to select suitable reading materials in order to manage a suitable place that can organize the educational trip which can benefit the students. Students also need to carry out group discussion before plan the trip so that they can prepare an effective working paper and formal letter that can get the approval from certain officers. First of all, it was so glad that I had finished our coursework on time. In this semester, we are given a coursework to do a working paper for educational trip to foreign country and write a formal letter to Director of our institute to request permission for the educational trip for our English Languege Proficiency subject. In group of three, we have finish this coursework. Besides, I feel that this is an interesting coursework, we had to chose a suitable place for the educational trip at foreign country. So we find information from website and some books. Initially we choose Victoria, Australia as our destination. But after we look for the price for flight ticket, we decide to change the destination as the cost is too expensive. After that, we try to look better and economic destination. After discussion, we choose to go to La Petite De Montesori and National Insitiute of Education in Singapore. We decided to finish this course work together. We work each other to gain more information about this two academic institution. We find the most suitable reason to go to this two institution and finish the working paper successfully and write a formal letter for request permission from Director of our institute to go for the educational trip. Through this course, I gained a lot of new knowledge and experience. i have learn a lot about to do the working paper for educational trip. I and my teammate work together to find a suitable place for this educational trip and write a formal letter to director of our institute to request permission for the educational trip. During doing this coursework, we are getting confuse and this problem solves after our lecturer explained to us about the way to do this coursework. After finish this coursework, I also gain a lot of new knowledge also know that the cooperation among the team members are important. Without the cooperation, we will not finish this coursework successfully. We have facing some problems in doing this coursework but we’ve overcome this problem through the cooperation. We also learnt to have good communication among each others during doing this coursework. In conclusion, I have gained a lot of new knowledge and experience through this coursework. This is an quiet interesting and good coursework and can give us a lot of benefits. I feel that this is a good coursework and can also give to the future student for them to get lots of knowledge and experience. Philip Wong Kee Hieng

I am Lai Pei Wen from group PISMP 2C, option Preschool SJKC. The obstacles that I faced during the process of completing this task are lack of information. But after being advised and counseled, I could understand well the best and most efficient way to complete this task. It was easier for me to develop each process to implement this task. Through this short coursework, I found that this task was quite interesting because we need to select a common place of interest abroad that we think may benefit the students. Before select a common place of interest abroad, my group mates and I took some time to find a correct format of formal letters and working paper. Finding the correct format of formal letter was not a big problem for us. But we faced difficulty to find a correct format of working paper. Fortunately I found a sample of working paper with the assistance of my friend from class F. Initially Victoria, Australia was our group first selection among hundreds of countries around the world, but after some consideration, Singapore was finally selected because Victoria located quite far away from Malaysia. The reason we select Singapore because Singapore’s education system had been ranked fifth in the world, behind Finland, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan. The quality of teaching and cultural respect for the education was key factors propelling Singapore into top five. In a nutshell, we decided to visit La Petite Montessori School and National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. After we had selected Singapore, we began to write a formal letter and working paper for this educational trip to request approval from Datin Siti Hanifah binti Madarsah, the Director of Institut Pendidikan Kampus Bahasa Melayu. This task was a good learning experience because neither one of us have any experience writing a working paper in English. Yet after some discussion among classmates, we could finish our working paper on time. Cooperation among my group mates was important; this task cannot be complete successfully without cooperation from my group mates. My suggestion for students working on this task in the future is choose the place wisely that can benefit and enrich their knowledge about overseas education programme and teaching profession. Last but not least, I feel very grateful and happy that I could learn much more knowledge and complete task with great success despite the obstacles and trials faced. Lai Pei Wen
