Akhona
Maqhina
This 25-year-old
contemporary dancer has
performed at the National
Arts Festival three times,
and returns from dancing
in Sweden this month
Initially I wanted to
be a social worker.
Growing up in Khayelitsha, I thought
helping others was what I wanted
to do. Then I discovered dancing
and realised my passion for it.
I've always been
good at the splits.
When I was eight, a group of ballet
dancers performed at my school.
I thought, 'I want to do that too!' I've
naturally always been able to do the
splits so I thought it had to be fate.
Dancing is all about
finding your centre.
My initial training was with Dance
Fo r All, where I learnt ballet. Now
I do everything from tap to hip-hop.
The thing to remember is t hat all
dancing is about finding your balance.
If you work on that, the rest is easy.
/22 COSMOPOLITAN JUNE 2013
Dancing as a career means
I burn a lot of kilojoules. I don't
really follow a very strict diet - I eat
what I want. But it's important to eat
balanced meals. I eat to have enough
energy for the day.
Having fun means you
push yourself more.
If you work out to have fun you're
more likely to push yourself and do it
more often. If you're doing it to get a
six-pack, you might be less motivated.
I love yoga.
I started doing yoga about three
years ago. I like it because, unlike
with dancing, I don't have to compete
or impress anyone. It's just about
getting a good, relaxed workout. ~

Do you
really need
to o
In the world off ashionable
food, gluten is getting really
bad press
S
till eating gluten? You may
as well admit to picking
your nose in public. These
days gluten - the protein
in wheat that makes bread
chewy - is the fa ll guy for all manner
of ills, from irritable bowel syndrome
(!BS) and fati gue to anxiety and other
psychological conditions. Considering
that it is also found in barley, rye, spelt
and even oats, it can be a mission to
cut it out of your diet.
Why has gluten suddenly become
the culinary bad boy? Partly because
coeliac di sease is now a buzz word,
says Dr Peter Barrow, a consultant
gastroenterologist at the Wits Donald
Gordon Medical Centre in Jo' burg.
'Coeli ac disease is an autoimmune
disease where gluten activates your
own immune system to damage itself,'
he says. ' Your body attacks the bowel,
reducing your absorption of nutrients
and putting you at risk of anaemia,
osteoporosis and chronic diarrhoea.'
/24 + COSMOPOLITAN JUNE 2013 +
The number of diagnoses of coeliac
disease has climbed as awareness of
the condition has increased. Overseas
it's estimated that between one in 100
and one in 300 people are sufferers.
The incidence in South Africa is not
confirmed, says Barrow, but it seems
more common among those with Dutch
heritage, and rare in black people.
Testing for coeliac disease is
straightforward. 'A specific blood test
for the presence of transglutaminase
antibodies (about R357 at Lancet
Laboratories, www.lancet. co.za)
measures how much your immune
system has been acti vated. If positive,
an intestinal biopsy can assess the
extent of the damage,' says Barrow.
Allergy vs
intolerance
Chances are you don' t have coeliac
disease. But what if wheat products
still make you feel tired/bloated/gassy?
Could you have a gluten allergy?
If wheat
products make
you feel tired/
bloated/ gassy,
could you
have a gluten
allergy?
Possibly. When your body
mistakes a food for a harmful
substance and mounts a response
to it, that's an allergy. Reactions
could include eczema, nausea,
vomiting, diarrhoea and asthma.
But gluten reactions usuall y appear
on the skin - as ' rashes, hives or
a swollen mouth,' says Barrow. ~
+ COSMOPOLITAN JUNE 2013 + /25
Body love
' In very rare cases, gluten
can trigger a life- threatening
anaphylactic reaction - but this
would be after first exposure in
early childhood. Your symptoms
would be instant and severe.'
And, sadly, testing for a gluten
allergy is nowhere near as clear-
cut as testing for coeliac disease.
' You could have a blood test, which
could show that you may be prone
to producing allergic cells,' Barrow
says. ' But this isn' t reliable, because
merely testing positive to a specific
food type doesn' t mean you' re
definitel y allergic to it.'
Many patients call themselves
'allergic' to wheat or gluten when,
in fact, they have fructan intolerance,
says Barrow. ' Wheat is a combination
of the protein gluten and the sugar
fructan. When fructans are digested,
they produce gas and could cause
bloating and exacerbate underlying
IBS,' he explains. But, as with gluten,
there's no reliable medical test for
fructan intolerance.
The low-FODMAPs diet,
developed in Australia,
is gaining a huge following.
Gastroenterologist Dr Peter
Barrow and dietitian Shirley
Norman both speak highly of
it as an initial food-elimination
guide. FODMAPs stands for
'fermentable, oligo-, di- and
monosaccharides, and polyols'
- a group of compounds that
are poorly absorbed in the
small intestine, including
highly fermentable food,
fructans, lactose and crystalline
compounds found in sweet food.
You can download a FODMAPs
app (there are several options)
to your smartphone to help
you avoid these while you're
shopping. You can also follow this
three-day low-FODMAPs menu
plan, developed by Norman:
/26 + COSMOPOLITAN JUNE 2013 +
Gut feeling?
Barrow says food allergies are
overdiagnosed but also believes
that stress and anxiety contribute to
symptoms. 'Almost 95% of the happy
hormone serotonin is produced in
the small intestine,' he says. ' Stress
can sensitise the gut-brain pathways
and cause physical symptoms such
as adverse reactions to foods.'
Under South African food-labelling
laws manufacturers are obliged to list
common allergens, including wheat,
spelt, rye, barley and oats, in their
ingredients. It's expensive to eat
gluten-free, but products that don't
contain it are now widely available.

'I lost

but still
wasn't happy'
Theodora Blanchfield changed
her life by perfecting her body.
But then she started wanting
everything else to be perfect
A
s I got ready for my
25th birthday party,
I looked in the mirror
and burst into tears.
I'd bought a dress for
the occasion, a short, bl ack, slinky
number. Under the lighting of the
store, I' d been fooled into thinking
that I looked great and I could mask
my discontent in a layer of silk.
Back in my fl at, I saw the truth:
I was overweight and unhappy.
I'd been a normal weight and
active growing up, doing gymnastics
and playing tennis in high school.
But once I graduated from uni versity,
my workouts were reduced t o half-
hearted spinning sessions, and it
would have taken a miraculous
metabolism to combat my new love
for Chinese takeaways and beer.
By my birthday, I was carrying close
to 90kg on my 1,65m frame.
I forced myself to go out that night
- I couldn't skip my own party. But
I spent it watching my girlfriends flirt
/:JO + COSMOPOLITAN JUNE 2013 +
with the guys with whom I wanted
to talk. Why would they talk to
chubby me? The night ended as
it had started: with me sobbing.
It wasn't only about my weight:
I hated where I was professionally.
I spent my days at a dry-as-dust trade
magazine when I wanted to be at a
glossy magazine. 'If I could change
one thing,' I thought, ' maybe I could
be as carefree as other girls.'
So I zeroed in on my weight.
I dropped a few kilos and bought a
pair of trendy jeans - the biggest size
buttoned, a victory I hadn' t tasted in
years. I vowed to make them actually
fit by my 26th birthday, so I wouldn't
have to spend another party hating
myself. It wasn' t the first time I said
it, and I' m sure nobody believed me.
I wasn't sure I believed myself.
I went to my gym and asked for a
trainer who would kick my ass. They
set me up with Joel, a small but buff
guy. He put me on the scale, and it
was brutal: 86kg. 'What do I need
to lose?' I asked. '22 kilos,' he said. I
knew I was overweight, but seriously?
We lifted weights twice a week,
and Joel wrote out instructions for
three or four more workouts I was
to do on my own. I was terrified of
trying the intervals on a treadmill,
but he shrugged off my excuses.
I'd st ep off, beet red and drenched,
embarrassed that what was probably
an easy workout to everyone else felt
impossible for me.
Joel also put me on a strict diet,
swapping the fried processed food
I'd li ved on for vegetables and lean
protein. I fought him kicking and
screaming - until it started working.
I restricted myself to one or two
drinks on Friday nights, knowing
that I had an early training session
on Saturday mornings. It was nice
not to wake up hungover and to
do something that fe lt awesome
instead. I fl oated home from the
gym knowing that every workout
was getting me closer to my goal.
A PINCH-ME PERIOD
The weight was falling off, and it gave
me a confidence that extended beyond
my appearance - or maybe unearthed
a confidence and discipline I didn' t
realise had been there. I was making
new friends and dating. I started a
blog, Losingweightinthecity, and it
was well received - so many readers
could relate to my struggles. Soon
I managed to parlay my blog into
a job doing social-media strategy
for one of those glossy magazines
that I'd always dreamed about.
Just two years after I spent my
25th birthday crying, I was living the
happy life that had seemed so elusive
that night. I had actually lost 22kg.
The websites that wouldn' t even give
me an interview were now writing
stories about me. Fitness studios
were inviting me to private classes
to review on my blog. The girl who
thought her friends were crazy for
running was traini ng for a marathon.
Blog readers I'd never met were
asking me questions about weight
loss and fitness .
Eventually, I found a new job
doing social media at a PR agency.
I volunteered to handle social media
for the New York Juni or League,
and I began training for my third
marathon, hoping to slice 20 minutes
off my personal best.
AND THEN
A CRASH
For a while, it seemed
like I could handle
it all. I learned to
stretch my physical
limits and take on
more, always with a
cheery, ready-co-excel
attitude. If I could
lose 22kg, I could
do anything, right?
But I couldn' t.
Last September,
I had a series of
crippling panic attacks.
I was sitting at my desk at work, and
the weight of everything I'd taken
on suddenly felt physically crushing
- my heart raced and my breathing
became shallow. I somehow got
myself to my doctor; even sitting
in the waiting room made my anxiety
skyrocket. By the time I saw the
nurse, my blood pressure was
150/90. When she handed me a
prescription for Xanax, the tears
started to fl ow again.
That night, my parents and two
friends came over, and we talked
all night. I hadn' t wanted to share
my anxiety - I was supposed to be
a healthy role model - but the more
we t alked, the more I realised my
fri ends had felt the same thing. And
when I posted about my panic on
my blog, the comments rolled in and
I reali sed I wasn' t remotely alone.
I started seeing a therapist who
reminded me that losing the weight
hadn't made me into Superwoman.
I didn't have to be perfect, say yes
to every invitation, or take on every
'I hold myself
to higher
standards now
sometimes
too high'
Body love
project. My therapist also helped
me manage my anxiety with deep
breathing and meditation, and
I haven' t had any major panic attacks
since the first. I'm also trying co stick
co my exercise routine because it
helps control my st ress too.
That night in front of the mirror,
I felt powerless to change. I shifted
my life into overdrive when I tasted
success and recognised my potential
and how much I was capable of.
I hold myself to higher standards
now - but sometimes too high.
Still, if the high of losing weight
pushed me close to the edge, it
was also what helped pull me back.
When I feel anxious or overwhelmed,
I remind myself of the real lesson
of losing those 22 kilograms: not
that I can do everything, but that
I deserve to put myself first.
Sometimes that means doing less
and saying no. I may never put
my life on cruise control, but
I'm recognising that sometimes
I also need to hit the brakes. ~

Success is within reach

little drama as possible.
Scorpio
(24 October

Money is on your mind.
Don't be too extravagant.
Spending time in bed with
your man will satisfy your
libido. Plan a holiday or

Sagittarius
(23 November

Romance could blossom
into something deeper -
for now, keep it light, fun

when things could become
more serious. Don't rush

Capricorn
(23 December

Work him out
The stars reveal what's up with your man
Gemini
Mr Gemini likes to be
seen as smart, fashionable,
clever and witty - and he
expects the woman in his
life to add to his lifestyle.
This month really is
all about him.
Cancer
He treats his GF as though
she's his mother - he's in
need of constant nurturing.
On the plus side, he's
creative in bed. His finances
will improve at month-end.
Leo
His outer pride belies his
vulnerability, so don't tease
him. For now he wants to
hang out with his friends,
colleagues and team-mates,
but later in the month he' ll
need more time alone.
Virgo
He' ll try to ignore
his feelings but they're
simmering away, ready to be
unleashed after the 22nd.
Let him think he's the best
lover in the world and he' ll
eat out of your hand.
Libra
Don't expect your Libra
man to be the rough,
tough Mr Macho. Be ready
to socialise and be seen
where it's all going on.
Love? That will have to
wait until after the 22nd .
Scorpio
Although he has his dark
side, he's likely to lighten up
soon. He may seem more
obsessive than manly, but
atter the 22nd he'll show
his feelings with real love .
Sagittarius
The Archer is atter the
most glam partner and
is more than willing to
turn you into his idea of
the perfect mate. Fickleness
rules until the 22nd, when
he becomes more emotional.
Capricorn
He's a stressed workaholic
this month and doesn't seem
to know what he wants. Be
patient and show him what
he needs! Atter the 22nd
he' ll be at his sexual peak.
Aquarius
He's in social mode at
the moment and needs
extra cash - he'll likely
delay buying anything
large or expensive. After
the 22nd, he will become
more dominant and sexual.
Pisces
This guy needs his domestic
arrangements running
smoothly. Family issues
will get some attention.
His intuition is very strong
so don't try to hide anything
from him. He will know .. .
Aries
Early in the month he's
fit, baring his outsized
ego with a libido to
match - until man-flu
hits, that is. He' ll appreciate
some TLC, chicken soup
and a gentle massage.
Taurus
Don't be fooled into
thinking his helpless
appearance means he needs
you - it's all part of his ploy.
He just loves women and
is a seducer of note! ~

We all strive to find that elusive balance between a fulfilling career, a happy home life and the demands of
keeping it all straight. Finding the tools to help create and manage that balance is key to a smarter, simpler life.
For the working woman, it's all about juggling.
School run versus early morning strategy
sessions versus guests for dinner, homework
and housework, school and career. It's a lot to
manage, which is why it's so important to have
the right tools for the job, to make sure that
everything runs smoothly and that the diverse
elements of life converge seamlessly.
Let's start with the most important tool in a
working woman's arsenal - her phone. Take
away that weapon of mass organisation and
things start to fall apart. What other device
could keep a schedule straight when it includes
school timetables, play-dates, extra-murals, work
meetings, after-hours events, family dinners,
shopping lists, social media and book club chat
groups? It's the ultimate tool for that moment
in the car en route to an urgent meeting when
a thought pops into your mind - 'don't forget
the cake sale at school tomorrow, and how am
I going to remember this later?' It's the ultimate
device for connectivity, so it needs to be the
smartest, hardest-working instrument in the kit,
with functional, helpful apps, alerts when you've
missed calls or messages and always ready to
work when you need it.
Another essential for any working woman is the
ability to keep working when you're away from
your desk. Whether it's a trip to the doctor with
a coughing toddler, a 10-minute gap while you're
waiting for ballet class to end or a few spare
minutes between off-site meetings, productivity
is a need, not a want. Of course, you reach into
your bag and grab your tablet - there's a reason
that this is the fastest-growing sector in the
market currently. A quick session to clear your
inbox during dead time? Easy multi-tasking with
a host of apps open in one view? Being able to jot
down notes or view something without opening
it? It's an instant stress reliever - just what the
working woman needs to keep up.
Just as the phone is the nerve centre of a
woman's organising empire, so the fridge is
the nerve centre of the home, at the heart of
the kitchen.
The working woman's steps to success include
planning, planning, planning - and a fridge
that supports all that effort. Like an easy slide
shelf that pulls out so that you can get the
packed lunches out without toppling last night's
leftovers. Its details, like a wider and deeper door
shelf that accommodates those extra drinks
you've bought, and a full open box in the freezer
that slides out all the way to take out that extra-
large lasagne for book club on a Thursday.
It's the intelligent compressor that knows to cool
the fridge when you pop that hot plate of food
inside. And when you take time on the weekend
to head for the farmer's market and stock up on
quality organic produce for the week, it's the
comfort of knowing that it will stay fresher for
longer thanks to innovative technology.
When it comes to looking the part, laundry
is high on the list of the necessary evils. A
must, yes, but thrilling? Not as much. The less
time spent waiting for a spin cycle the better.
Energy efficiency is a handsome plus, but it's
the effectiveness in washing delicate items
and rinsing the detergent out thoroughly, that
15-minute quick-timed wash that allows you to
squeeze in a load before you hit the traffic, the
quiet drive motor that lets you run it late at night
without losing any sleep - these are the things
that make a working woman's heart beat faster.
It's about that beautiful moment of convergence,
when you know that technology is working its
heart out so that you don't have to.

Mobile Devices
- Unplug your device as soon as it is fully
charged to prevent energy wastage
- Invest in devices with improved battery life,
which will require fewer charging cycles
In the kitchen
- Refrigerators with invertor technology keep
the interior at a constant temperature, thus
reduces energy consumption
- When buying a new dishwasher or washing
machine, insist on a minimum of an A-energy
rating. This is your guarantee that the
appliance is energy efficient
Laundry
- Invest in a washing machine that is capable
of a cold water wash
- Opt for a quick 15-minute wash cycle to
reduce your monthly electricity bill

hat I love most
about denim is that
it connects us to so
many fashion eras
instantly, whether
we're old enough to have been there
or not. Flared j eans take us back to the
'70s, while an acid wash allows us to
relive the '80s, keeping us firmly fashion
rel evant in the present as it updates our
look effortlessly with studded, metallic,
waxed and printed denim statements.
Denim is also the one t rend t hat -
unlike red-carpet looks - we can all
share with celebs and superstars.
We don' t have to earn Kate Moss's day
rate to wear the jeans she was 'spotted
in'. And I love the fact that the older,
more worn-in and distressed my denim
jacket becomes the better it looks, and
that when my favourite jeans simply
cannot hold themselves t ogether at
the knees any more, they are more than
happy t o be transformed into the hottest
pair of short s! Best of all, though, is the
fact that you can always make denim
work! It's always ready t o play nice
with all the other items in your wardrobe.
It's not fazed to share its fashion outing
with a tailored tuxedo jacket and the
sexiest heels ever, or a bomber jacket
and wedge sneakers. Hell, it's even
happy to chi ll out with a basic T-shirt
and trainers. You' ve got to love such
uncompl icated fashi on pieces.
Enjoy thi s bumper issue of buy-now-
and-live-in-forever denim delights.
And remember, you can never own
too much denim!

Efron, Morgan
Shelly is just
like every other 16-year-old girl,
except that she has one of the
coolest after-school gigs ever
as the face of a global brand.
The Cape Town teenager was
chosen from dozens of hopefuls
to be the SA representative of
lifestyle brand Guess, joining the
ranks of local beauties Lisa Marie
Schneider, Minki van der
Westhuizen and Natasha Barnard.
We chat to the brown-haired,
green-eyed stunner about her
plans to conquer the internati onal
modeling world ...
HOW DID YOUR FRIENDS
AND FAMILY REACT
TO THE NEWS?
They were very supportive and
excited for me. My fami ly has
always pushed me to pursue
every opportunity. People who
aren't close fri ends were quick
to assume that it would go to
my head, but my family and
friends would never let me do
that. They keep me grounded.
HAVE YOU HAD ANY
WEIRD REACTIONS?
Yes! Some people I don' t even
know started calling me 'That
Morgan girl '. It's so awkward
because I' m sti ll me; I've just
been given this big pr ivilege
and been very lucky.
IS MODELLING AS MUCH
FUN AS IT LOOKS?
Not at all. I love what I do but you
often work long hours and early
mornings. There's often little time
to relax and it can be draining.
It's hard to hear that you don't
have the ri ght look for something.
I admire people who do it full
time because you need to be
a strong person.
WHAT IS YOUR LIFE
LIKE OFF SET?
I spend a lot of time skateboarding,
catching local bands and chilling
at the beach with my friends or
with my boyfriend and his fri ends.
My boyfriend and I are the same
age and we've been together
for two years.
WHAT ARE YOUR
MODELLING PLANS
FOR THE FUTURE?
I want to go overseas and
be successful. Of course, like
every model, I'd love to be
part of the Victori a's Secret team.
Even going to one of their shows
would be a dream. Miranda Kerr
and Cara Delevingne are my
favourite Angels. And of course,
Candice Swanepoel is an inspiration
for a lot of local girls. :1€

HOW TO WEAR IT
'Our collection's bohemian styles
consist of vintage apparel and
accessories that channel a free-
spirited era. It captures the fun
and adventurous spirit of summer
festivals where memories are
made and relived. The pieces
are all unique and individuall y
designed with a handcrafted
touch. Graphic rock-band T-shirts
as well as f lag pri nts and camo-
embroidered denim shorts evoke
vintage Americana influences.
Loose-fitting tanks with exaggerated
hi-low hemlines and fringed
detailing are edgy, while denim
shorts with vibrant. colourful
beading add a touch of femininity.
High-waisted distressed denim
shorts, studded tops, skinny jeans,
billowy lace tunics and easy T-shirts

HOW TO WEAR IT
' Your skinny jeans are one of this
season's must-have items,' says
Nicky Annandale, Soviet's ladies
designer/ merchandiser. 'The others
are a leather jacket, a cute cardigan
and - the ultimate statement item
- a blazer. You can dress it up for
a hot date or a night on the town,
or wear it to work. This season
there's a lot of genuine leather
and faux fur. Also look out for
garments with interesting details
like cross-sti tching, frills, studs and
embroidery - but if your jeans are
detailed, wear them with a plain
shirt or bodysuit and a blazer, and
accessorise with a studded belt,
patterned scarf or chunky earrings.'

HOW TO WEAR IT
'Wint er plays wit h t he ri chness of
oxblood and rose, whereas texture
within t he construction becomes key,'
say Gigi Williams-Shaik, Sissy Boy's
design director, and Trudi Maritz,
senior denim designer. ' Lace-infused
denim, velvet detai ling and leather
combinat ions and trims juxtapose
t he femininity, t he luxury and the
hard-core edge of winter's key fashion
trends into a full-flavoured j eans story.
Studs and embellishment explode thi s
season, so denim dresses up - but it
al so dresses right down.'
