GLENS FALLS SENIOR CITIZENS CENTER, INC. UP COMING ACTIVITIES: 380 Glen Street Glens Falls, NY 12801 518-793-2189. ONE STROKE ART CLASS PLANNED Monday, January 9, 12:30 –2:00 p.m. Chris Mahoney will help you create a winter scene with snowmen on a surprise medium. For $15, you will go home with a completed project. This class has created candles on canvas, flowers on mirrors, a set of wine glasses, landscapes, and a myriad of other interesting, challenging, and very easy painting projects. The technique is quite simple-a stroke at a time, practice before you commit to the final piece, and a delightful creation for gift giving or keeping at class end. Call the Center by January 6 if interested in joining this class. GOOD BOOKS CLUB MEETS Monday, January 9, 1:00 P.M. The group will be discussing the interesting and amazing chronicle of Solomon Northup born in Minerva, NY, lived in what is now the Old Fort Museum in Fort Edward, and spent 12 years as a slave in the south. Through it all, attempts to escape, hopelessness, and amazing endurance, Northup relates his story, an inspiring account of a man who never gives up. Anyone having read the book is most welcome to join the discussion. GAME DAY Tuesday, January 10, 1:00 p.m. Go Bananas with a game which you play alone but together. Join us for Farkle, Bunco, and your favorite game as well as spending a winter afternoon not watching the television set. AGING IN PLACE FILM SLATED Wednesday, January 11, 1 p.m. The group will view “Driving Miss Daisy” starring Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy. This beloved film looks at not only racial issues but the issue of aging in a southern society. COME HEAR RENEWAL CHORUS SING at POMPANUCK FARM! Pompanuck Farm will be hosting a concert performance by Renewal Chorus on Sunday, Jan 8. 2 PM in The Round House at Pompanuck Farm. The Renewal Chorus is a small, cooperatively-led ensemble of friends who first sang together as teenagers with the world music group Village Harmony. Since 2007, Renewal has assembled in the winter for a concert tour of the Northeast, performing traditional polyphony from around the world. This winter, they will embark upon their sixth tour, including a concert at Pompanuck! Their concert features propelling rhythms and wide-open chords of American Shape Note music, early 20th century men’s gospel, silvery tones and elaborate melodies of Corsican and Bulgarian trio songs and ancient polyphony from Caucasus Georgia. Each concert also showcases new and classic songs written by New England composers. Many of the Renewal singers have traveled abroad to study ethnic singing traditions first hand. Village Harmony co-director Larry Gordon praises their “tight and unified ensemble sound” and “wealth of experience in the wide range of world singing styles,” calling them an assembly of “many of the finest singers among the recent graduates of Village Harmony’s traveling teen ensembles.” This concert is not to be missed! A suggested donation of $12-15 will be accepted at the door. Please visit www.pompanuckfarm.blogspot.com for more information and other events, as well as, directions to Pompanuck Farm 494 Chestnut Hill Road Cambridge, NY 12816 518.677.5552 For more information about Renewal Chorus visit www.renewalchorus.com or contact (802) 345-6460,

RENSSELAER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS GOODBYE TO FAITHFUL K-9 DEPUTY, AXEL
The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office said goodbye to K-9 Axel, one of the Sheriff’s Office’s finest working K9’s. Only two days after finding several ounces of cocaine in Troy and helping make a significant arrest, K-9 Axel suddenly collapsed. He was diagnosed with advanced stage cancer and sadly had to be euthanized. “I can’t put into words how profoundly sad this loss is,” Axel’s handler, Deputy Mark Geracitano said as he spoke about his K-9 partner. “He was a true friend and a beloved member of our family. He was always by my side and always ready to go to work. It has been an honor to have such a watchful, faithful partner who was always willing to put himself out there, and ready to sacrifice his own life in order to protect me.” Axel came on the force in 2005 when he was three years old and was partnered with Deputy Geracitano. For six years, he served the Sheriff’s Office as a full patrol dog. He had tens of thousands of dollar’s worth of drug finds, illegal firearms finds, building and vehicle searches, criminal apprehensions, arrests and tracking missing persons credited to him in his career. Axel was instrumental in tracking four missing children in Grafton several years ago and was credited with helping to save their lives. Deputy Geracitano and Axel are part of a bigger family, and everyone at the Sheriff’s Office lost something special with Axel’s passing. “Says Deputy Geracitano, “We were a great team. Axel’s efforts over the years will long be remembered. He will be greatly missed.” Axel’s name will be added to the list of fallen K-9 heroes honored by the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office on its annual calendar whose proceeds help support the K-9 program.

Plans are underway for a 2014 choral tour to Estonia, Finland, and St. Petersburg, Russia. Mezzo soprano Susan Hermance Fedak has appeared with the Berkshire Lyric Theatre, the Glens Falls Symphony, and the Lake George Opera Company, and been soloist with many of the Capital District’s choral ensembles. A resident of Albany, Ms. Fedak is Associate Minister of Music and Arts at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Director of the Saratoga Children’s Chorus, and newly appointed Conductor of the Burnt Hills Oratorio Society for the 2012-13 season. If so, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development agency’s home loan program might be right for you. Rural Development’s Single Family Housing Program Rural Development serves as the USDA’s economic and community development arm and has the mission of improving economic conditions and the quality of life in rural America. The agency’s Single Family Housing (SFH) Program supports this mission by offering direct and guaranteed home loans to help rural New Yorkers buy or build safe, decent and affordable homes. Home ownership is an economic cornerstone for individuals and communities and owning a home is an integral part of the American dream. The direct and indirect impacts of housing development also provides a stimulus for manufacturing, trade industries and related professional services, benefitting the larger economy. Direct Loan Program The direct loan program provides government loans to very-low to low-income families or individuals. Borrowers must be able to afford mortgage payments, including taxes and homeowners insurance, and have a reasonable credit history. Direct loans are for 33 years, although 38-year terms are available in some cases. Payment assistance also is available for many qualifying borrowers. Guaranteed Loan Program The guaranteed loan program is administered in partnership with private lenders and is designed to assist moderate-income borrowers. In the guaranteed program, the loan is made by a bank, credit union or other financial institution, and Rural Development guarantees a large percentage of the loan on the borrower’s behalf. The guarantee enables lenders to offer more affordable mortgage terms. The First Step Rural Development operates an extensive income and property eligibility web site at http://eligibility.sc.egov.usda.gov/eligibility/ welcomeAction.do. Potential applicants can find out if the home they’re interested in is in an eligible area – the loan programs are restricted to rural areas – and find income limits for their locations. Prospective homebuyers should also call the USDA Rural Development Service Center in Greenwich, N.Y. at (518) 6929940 ext. 4. The Service Center can provide detailed information on the loan programs and help prospective home buyers determine which program is right for them. The Greenwich center serves Washington, Warren, Saratoga, Rensselaer, Essex and Hamilton counties. THE SCHUYLERVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY’S KNITTING CLUB is now open to all crafters. The group meets the third Tuesday of each month at 7pm at our library. UNCLE WALLY WONDERS
Last week the Renssealaer County Treasurer’s office submitted a notice to tax payers along with the local tax bills. The notice said: New York counties are required by law to provide and pay for many services mandated by the federal government and New York State. The services are paid for by your real estate tax dollars. The impact of these mandated programs is quite severe, amouinting to 90% of your current tax bill! Despite the 2% property tax cap, the pattern of state and federal mandated growth continues upward, with costs increasing by a whopping 54% over the past 5 years. Essential services provided by the county, such as patrol and maintenance of roads and bridges together with senior and veteran services decreased by 11% over the same period! Quite simply the State should practise what it preaches and exercise fiscal restraint. To seek more information, the notice urges you to go to the website www.rensco.com and click on STOP MANDATES NOW button. I suggest you also contact your state Senators and Congressmen and let it be know how discouraged you are with their excessive tax and spend approach to governing. They should respond, but I wonder. FOLLOWING THEIR FOOTSTEPS: The Knox Trail Honor Walk During the winter of 1775–1776, Colonel Henry Knox left Boston, marched to New York’s Fort Ticonderoga, and—with a team of men and oxen—hauled more than 50 tons of cannons and other arms back to Boston’s Dorchester Heights. The threat of these cannons firing on British ships in Boston Harbor led to the British evacuation of Boston, a major victory for the fledging Continental Army. In 1926, New York and Massachusetts began installing commemorative markers that traced the so-called “Knox Trail” at locations in the two states. In April of 2012, staff members of Patriots of the American Revolution Magazine will walk the Knox Trail. The mission: to honor Henry Knox and his “noble train of artillery,” to raise awareness of and promote the Knox Trail as a unique American historical route, and to help the American Revolution Association raise needed money for history-based museums and parks with connections to Henry Knox and the Knox Trail. Starting from Fort Ticonderoga on Friday, April 6, 2012, Patriots of the American Revolution Managing Editor Benjamin Smith and Copyeditor Alex Culpepper will march south along Lake George and the Hudson River to Kinderhook, New York, where they will veer east into Massachusetts, aiming to reach Dorchester Heights in Boston National Historical Park on Wednesday, April 18. Along the way they will take photographs of the various markers along the Knox Trail and document their trip for in-depth articles about the Trail that will run in future issues of Patriots of the American Revolution magazine. Donations received by corporations and private individuals will be collected by the American Revolution Association and distributed directly and equally to the following four museums and parks: Fort Ticonderoga (www.fortticonderoga.org) New York State Military Museum (http://cts.vresp.com/c/?FriendsoftheNewYorkS/ 71393a5f47/89c3e18a2f/6c4e277454 Boston National Historical Park (www.nps.gov/bost/index.htm) Montpelier, The General Henry Knox Museum (www.generalknoxmuseum.org) Patriots of the American Revolution and the American Revolution Association will keep none of the donations.
