MAKE AN INVESTMENT IN HOOSICK’S YOUTH SUPPORT THE HAYC3 ANNUAL FUND DRIVE The Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition (HAYC3) is seeking support from the community to continue its programming for youth and families. Although HAYC3 received a large federal grant this year, those funds are restricted and cannot be used for recreation programs, after school activities, or basic facility needs, such as heat, electricity and maintenance. Community investment is needed to keep the center operating at its current capacity. Now is the perfect time to make an investment in Hoosick’s youth by supporting the Youth Center. All donations made to our 501(c)(3) organization before December 31, 2010 are tax-deductible this year. All donors will receive a receipt for tax purposes. Each year hundreds of children and teens utilize the Youth Center and its programs. No child is ever denied access because of an inability to pay, and many families rely on the center for after school care and family support. “In response to this annual appeal, please be as generous as your circumstances allow,” said HAYC3 Board President James Monahan in the recently-distributed annual appeal brochure. “The operation of the Youth Center for nearly six decades is due in large part to the kindness of members of the community who grew up visiting the center and participating in its programs. Let’s work together to keep that tradition alive for future generations.” Donations can be mailed to HAYC3, PO Box 492, Hoosick Falls, NY 12090 or online at www.hoosickyouth.org. DERBY CAR WORKSHOP: On Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 2pm, the Saratoga Automobile Museum will present a workshop on “How To Build the Best Pinewood Derby Car Ever”. This year, they not only have a track to test out Cub Scout cars for a real hands-on experience, there will be racing simulators to try their virtual skills. “This is a great way for scouts and their parents to get a few tips on designing the best Pinewood Derby car ever.” said Tracy Paige, Educational Development Director at the Museum, “plus the afternoon we have planned is a great opportunity for the scouts and parents to do a little bonding. Nothing can bring parents and children together better then a building project that they can work on as a team.” There will also be opportunities for scouts to get inspiration at the Museum because they will be surrounded by amazing cars from the “Right Coast Rods” exhibit, sit in a Formula Vee Race Car or take a peek at a racing Ferrari or Maserati in the “Racing In New York” Gallery. Admission for scouts ages 6-16 is $3.50, and adult admission is $8.00. For more information, call (518) 587 1935 x 17, or go on line at www.saratogaautomuseum.org . SESAME STREET LIVE’S ELMO AND FRIENDS SHOW YOUNG CHILDREN HOW TO ‘GO GREEN’ AT GLENS FALLS CIVIC CENTER ON FEBRUARY 1-2. Sesame Street Live’s Elmo and friends will teach young children the importance of “going green” and focusing on the environment when they perform “Elmo’s Green Thumb” at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Tuesday, February 1 and Wednesday, February 2. Tickets start as low as $12 and on sale Monday, Dec. 13 at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000, online at ticketmaster.com or by visiting the Glens Falls Civic Center Box Office. Elmo has raised his sunflower, Sunny, from a seed, but his floral friend has outgrown the flower pot. Elmo and friends find Big Bird’s garden the ideal place for Sunny to flourish and grow but they are too excited to wait. Rather than let Sunny follow nature’s course, Abby Cadabby, Sesame Street’s fairy-intraining, casts a spell to make Sunny grow. The spell does just the opposite and, instead of growing, Elmo and all of his friends shrink! While Abby searches for just the right words to reverse the spell, Elmo, Zoe, Telly and friends explore Big Bird’s garden from a smaller perspective and learn some big lessons about patience, overcoming their fears and appreciating the role that each creature plays in our ecosystem – from dancing ladybugs and beautiful butterflies to grouchy beetles that scavenge the garden floor. Will being small help Sunny grow tall? It’s a fresh, original Sesame Street Live on a whole new scale! Like television’s Sesame Street, each Sesame Street Live production features timeless lessons for all ages. The universal appeal of each Broadway-quality musical production continues long after preschool. Adults will appreciate the high-tech stagecraft, cleverly written script, and music they’ll recognize and enjoy sharing with children, such as “Ladybug Picnic,” “Inch by Inch” and “I Love Trash.” RESERVE JUST TWO HOURS FOR YOU! THERE ARE 672 HOURS IN A MONTH. IT’S TIME YOU RESERVE TWO JUST FOR FUN! Join the Washington County Toastmasters at our next meeting and learn just how much fun you can have while learning to communicate effectively. Regular meetings are held every third Wednesday of the month at the Annex II Building of the Washington County Municipal Center, next to the Cornell Cooperative Extension office on Route 4 in Hudson Falls, NY from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Guests are encouraged to arrive a few minutes early to settle in. Come join us, and bring a friend! Visit us online at http:// washingtoncounty.freetoasthost.com.

Then The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program in Warren and Washington County may be just what you’re looking for. The Internal Revenue Service promotes the VITA program where trained and certified volunteer tax preparers explain the many credits and deductions available and help people claim them on their tax returns. These volunteers will assist individuals with low–to-moderate incomes to complete and electronically file their tax returns at locations throughout Washington and Warren County – for free. With the many tax credits available on the 2010 tax returns we foresee an increase in the number of people needing assistance completing their tax returns this filing season. Thus we need more volunteers. Who can volunteer? People just like you — homemakers, students, members of volunteer or community organizations, and businessmen and women. Volunteer Tax Assistors receive free instruction and all training and certification materials necessary to prepare basic income tax returns. Training classes in basic tax law begins in November and includes the use of electronic filing software supplied by the IRS.For more information about the VITA tax training and to reserve your place in class please call Cornell Cooperative Extension Washington County @ 518746-2560 or the Tri County United Way @ 518-793-3136. HOT ROD RESTORATION: The Saratoga Automobile Museum’s SAM’s Garage youth educational program, in conjunction with local artists and car restorers, today announced plans to build a 1930s Hot Rod involving up to 15 students aged 12-17 from a 13 county area surrounding Saratoga Springs. Now they just need the right car. “We are looking for a 1930s or ‘40s car to be hot rodded or a hot rod that can be refurbished. If you have a car that you would like to donate for the cause, contact Alan Edstrom at the Saratoga Auto Museum at (518) 587-1935 x 22. The no-charge program is scheduled for four 8-hour weekend days through the winter, beginning in January. The finished product will make its debut at the museum’s annual Auto Show and Invitational May 14 and 15, 2011. The deadline to apply is December 20, 2010, with those chosen to participate to be notified by January 1, 2011. www.saratogaautomuseum.org.
[email protected]. (518) 587 1935 x 22. SUSPENSE NOVEL ABOUT HORSE RACING GETS RAVE REVIEWS. Razor sharp...a nifty tale of ambition, deception and revenge...a first-rate thriller...a Grade I racetrack mystery.” Those are just some of the terrific reviews for Shedrow, the first novel by Dr. Dean LeLuke, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon from Schenectady, NY, who is graciously donating a portion of all sales proceeds to the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF). Shedrow is not only winning rave reviews, but Suspense Magazine just named the book one of the three best of 2010 in the medical thriller category. “The book has been received quite well, not only by those primarily interested in racing but by those interested in suspense,” DeLuke, 59, said. “It’s been a very rewarding experience.’ DeLuke worked on his father’s farm in Chestertown, N.Y., when he was young, attended the races with his father when he was 11 at defunct Green Mountain in Vermont, and was a partner in Dogwood Stable. His desire to mix his medical background with racing resulted in “Shedrow,” published by Grey Swan Press. The book follows Dr. Anthony Gianni, a prominent Manhattan surgeon who becomes involved in a racing partnership that owns a promising classic contender named Chiefly Endeavor. But when a new partner with an unsavory background appears, Gianni and a dedicated veterinarian must confront organized crime and solve a complex mystery. DeLuke said he spent a year working on a rough draft and another year refining the book. As for his donation to the TRF, DeLuke said; “I’ve been a TRF donor in the past. For me, it was just a way of giving back.” For more information on DeLuke’s book, check out www.shedrowthenovel.com. SALEM EXTRA HELPINGS PROGRAM - JAN 2011 Extra Helpings Menu: $21.00: 6-7 lb.
