The Stovery - Home of Soothing Fires FOLLOWING THEIR FOOTSTEPS: The Knox Trail Honor Walk During the winter of 1775–1776, Colonel Henry Knox left Boston, marched to New York’s Fort Ticonderoga, and—with a team of men and oxen—hauled more than 50 tons of cannons and other arms back to Boston’s Dorchester Heights. The threat of these cannons firing on British ships in Boston Harbor led to the British evacuation of Boston, a major victory for the fledging Continental Army. In 1926, New York and Massachusetts began installing commemorative markers that traced the so-called “Knox Trail” at locations in the two states. In April of 2012, staff members of Patriots of the American Revolution Magazine will walk the Knox Trail. The mission: to honor Henry Knox and his “noble train of artillery,” to raise awareness of and promote the Knox Trail as a unique American historical route, and to help the American Revolution Association raise needed money for history-based museums and parks with connections to Henry Knox and the Knox Trail. Starting from Fort Ticonderoga on Friday, April 6, 2012, Patriots of the American Revolution Managing Editor Benjamin Smith and Copyeditor Alex Culpepper will march south along Lake George and the Hudson River to Kinderhook, New York, where they will veer east into Massachusetts, aiming to reach Dorchester Heights in Boston National Historical Park on Wednesday, April 18. Along the way they will take photographs of the various markers along the Knox Trail and document their trip for in-depth articles about the Trail that will run in future issues of Patriots of the American Revolution magazine. Donations received by corporations and private individuals will be collected by the American Revolution Association and distributed directly and equally to the following four museums and parks: Fort Ticonderoga (www.fortticonderoga.org) New York State Military Museum (http://cts.vresp.com/c/?FriendsoftheNewYorkS/ 71393a5f47/89c3e18a2f/6c4e277454 Boston National Historical Park (www.nps.gov/bost/index.htm) Montpelier, The General Henry Knox Museum (www.generalknoxmuseum.org) Patriots of the American Revolution and the American Revolution Association will keep none of the donations. Level of Sponsorship Mortar ($50 contribution) • Knox Trail Honor Walk coffee mug • Copy of the July/August 2012 Patriots of the American Revolution • Name will be published in the magazine’s July/August 2012 sponsor list Howitzer ($100 contribution) • Copy of the book Henry Knox: Visionary General of the American Revolution by Mark Puls • Copy of the July/August 2012 Patriots of the American Revolution • Name will be published in the magazine’s July/August 2012 sponsor list Bronze Cannon ($500 contribution) • Copy of the book Henry Knox: Visionary General of the American Revolution by Mark Puls • 3-disc DVD series: Liberty! ACCLAIMED AUTHOR MARIA SPECK TO TEACH A HANDS-ON COOKING CLASS BASED ON HER BEST SELLING BOOK ANCIENT GRAINS FOR MODERN MEALS TO BENEFIT THE BATTENKILL KITCHEN IN HISTORIC WASHINGTON COUNTY NEW YORK. The Battenkill Kitchen is pleased to announce the start of its exciting 2012 Cooking Class Season with Maria Speck. Maria Speck not only brings whole and ancient grains to the written page, but also shares with you the ease with which they can become your fast-friends in the kitchen. The recipes are written with clarity, shared with ample stories and rich with history of the grains to make you hungry to cook and share. Ancient grains might seem old fashioned, but come discover why they are the most chic and right-now inspiration of the food world. In this more mindful, health conscious time it is proven that eating whole grains provides a delicious, healthful alternative to processed foods. If you made a promise to eat better, and live more mindfully this New Year, Maria will surely provide you with recipes to help you achieve that goal and live that promise. Space is limited, early registration is advised, Class cost is $110 and includes cost of book. Salem, New York – Saturday January 28, 2012 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. About Ancient Grains for Modern Meals: Food writer Maria Speck’s passion for propelling Old World staples such as farro, barley, polenta, and wheat berries to the forefront of new American cooking is beautifully presented in Ancient Grains for Modern Meals. Maria Speck draws on food traditions from across the Mediterranean and northern Europe to reveal how versatile, satisfying, flavorful, and sophisticated whole grains can be. Rustic but elegant dishes—Creamy Farro with Honey-Roasted Grapes, Barley Salad with Figs and Tarragon-Lemon Dressing, Lamb Stew with Wheat Berries in Red Wine Sauce, and Purple Rice Pudding with Rose Water Dates—are sure to please discerning palates and become favorites in any whole grain repertoire. Learn how to integrate whole grains into busy lives, from quick-cooking quinoa and buckwheat to the slower varieties such as spelt and Kamut. The stunning flavors and lively textures of whole grains are enhanced with natural ingredients such as butter, cream, and prosciutto—in moderation—to create lush Mediterranean-inspired recipes. A collection of time-honored, updated classics a treasury for today’s cooks. About Maria Speck: The New York Times listed the book, Maria’s first, as one of the best cookbooks of 2011. Maria grew up in Greece and Germany before moving to the US in 1993—this unusual heritage is at the center of her cooking, writing, and teaching. Maria’s recipes are inspired by the ease and appeal of Mediterranean cuisine and the centuries-old traditions of preparing whole grain foods in Northern Europe. She combines her vast knowledge about cooking and baking with whole grains with a keen understanding of how to transform these ancient staples into quick and modern foods for our time-strapped lives. In her food writing, Maria combines more than two decades of journalistic research, editing and reporting with her lifelong passion for food. She started her career at Germany’s leading news agency Deutsche Presse Agentur (DPA), and she came to the US as a Knight Fellow at Stanford University. Since then, she has worked as a freelance writer for US and German magazines. In the US, Maria has contributed to Gourmet magazine, Saveur, Gastronomica, the Vegetarian Times and Cooking Club, the publication of the Cooking Club of America among others. In Germany, Maria’s stories have been published in the country’s leading magazines and newspapers. Maria is a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP), Chefs Collaborative, Les Dames d’Escoffier, The Culinary Guild of New England, and Slow Food USA. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development has money available for low interest homeownership loans. Section 502 Direct and Guaranteed loans provide low to moderate income individuals and families the opportunity to acquire, build, rehabilitate, or improve single family dwellings in rural areas. The standard term for a Section 502 loan is 33 years, but 38- year loans may be considered for those who cannot afford a 33- year loan. Applicants may be eligible for payment assistance to reduce monthly payments. To qualify for USDA Rural Development’s Direct Loan Program, applicants must have a household income of less than 80 percent of the county median, have an acceptable credit history and have sufficient income to make the mortgage payment. The home purchased must be modest, in good repair, (or able to be repaired with loan funds) and located in an eligible rural area. Interested persons can distinguish if their area is considered rural by visiting http://eligibility.sc.egov.usda.gov/eligibility/. Section 502 Guaranteed Loans are available to moderate income families and individuals. Applicants apply to approved lenders and USDA Rural Development issues loan note guarantees to participating lenders. These loans are made for 30 years at a fixed interest rate. The lender may loan up to 100% of the appraised value, and closing costs and repairs can often be included in the loan. A down payment and private mortgage insurance is not required, but a 2% one time guarantee fee is required at closing. For additional information regarding USDA Rural Development programs contact the Greenwich USDA Service Center at (518) 692-9940, Ext. 4, Todd Loy, or visit http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/ny. Hoosick Falls, NY HAYC3 (Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition) and the village police department strengthen their Hoosick Falls Community Police Partnership Program with mentoring. Officer McClellan volunteered his time to mentor Ethan Bisonette, 1st grader from the HAYC3’s after-school program, onto the force. Both are pictured after a long afternoon of crosswalk guarding so that the HAYC3 after-school youth could safely walk through the village to pass out their holiday gifts to local business and community members. The Community Police Partnership Program is made possible by the Drug-Free Communities Grant. GLENS FALLS SENIOR CITIZENS CENTER, INC. UP COMING ACTIVITIES: 380 Glen Street Glens Falls, NY 12801 518-793-2189. ONE STROKE ART CLASS PLANNED Monday, January 9, 12:30 –2:00 p.m. Chris Mahoney will help you create a winter scene with snowmen on a surprise medium. For $15, you will go home with a completed project. This class has created candles on canvas, flowers on mirrors, a set of wine glasses, landscapes, and a myriad of other interesting, challenging, and very easy painting projects. The technique is quite simple-a stroke at a time, practice before you commit to the final piece, and a delightful creation for gift giving or keeping at class end. Call the Center by January 6 if interested in joining this class. GOOD BOOKS CLUB MEETS Monday, January 9, 1:00 P.M. The group will be discussing the interesting and amazing chronicle of Solomon Northup born in Minerva, NY, lived in what is now the Old Fort Museum in Fort Edward, and spent 12 years as a slave in the south. Through it all, attempts to escape, hopelessness, and amazing endurance, Northup relates his story, an inspiring account of a man who never gives up. Anyone having read the book is most welcome to join the discussion. GAME DAY Tuesday, January 10, 1:00 p.m. Go Bananas with a game which you play alone but together. Join us for Farkle, Bunco, and your favorite game as well as spending a winter afternoon not watching the television set. Refreshments as well as good company make this afternoon a pleasant way to stay warm and to get out of the house. AGING IN PLACE FILM SLATED Wednesday, January 11, 1 p.m. The group will view “Driving Miss Daisy” starring Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy. This beloved film looks at not only racial issues but the issue of aging in a southern society. Discussion of the film follows the viewing and it is usually a lively session with important senior issues as the topic. The Aging In Place group seeks to help seniors stay in their homes with some volunteer help from member seniors.
