International hospital of Bahrain The International Hospital of Bahrain is the kingdom’s first private medical centre. From a small private clinic of its founder, Dr. Faysal Saeed Zeerah, it evolved to a major community hospital over the past thirty years. It is dedicated to the service of the Community and is grateful to have its support since its establishment in 1978. The International Hospital of Bahrain offers a wide-range of services. Specialties include Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Reproductive and IVF Centre, Dental and Orthodontics, Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Bariatric Medicine, Neonatology and Paediatrics, Ophthalmology, ENT, General Surgery, Physiotherapy, Urology, Orthopaedics, Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Psychiatry, Plastic Surgery and Dermatology. A 24-hour Accident and Emergency Department and a Pharmacy complement its services. All of that under one roof. The Culture of IHB IHB’s unique culture gives it its unique identity, distinguishing it from other private hospitals even if they provide the same or similar services. Although the culture of any organization is mainly related to its internal environment, external factors can also affect the system of the organization’s culture. The reason why we said it’s a system ,because it has inputs(Values ,Thoughts ,Feedback ,Laws ,Competition) And processing ( which is done by members of this organization) , and output (Behaviors, Technologies ,Strategies ,Image Products/services) . 3

IHB culture trends IHB has many culture trends that distinguish it from other private hospitals. For example each month , nurses change their uniform’s color and style, rather than ordinary white or blue uniforms .furthermore ,when you enter the IHB at the moment , you’ll see a huge Christmas tree . This is because the diversity of religious believes. Even in Eid Muslim staff and doctors have their own celebrations, Indians do as well .further more greeting cards and sms messages are often sent to customers when they have special occasions such as their birthdays. as we look at the chart presented below , we see the about 64 % of doctors are Indians , 31% are Egyptians , and 2% Bahraini’s and 3 % are from other nationalities , these figures and mixture of different cultures will surely effect the IHB culture .

Culture Determinants Economic condition The current economic condition affects the culture in many ways. One major way is that the income level of the Bahraini citizens is currently below the average of GCC. Not all Bahrainis can afford getting health care in a private hospital, so most of the customers will be from the upper class of society, which is people with high positions and high income, which certainly affect the general culture of the hospital.

Leadership Style Since the hospital started in 1978, Dr. Faisal Al-Zeerah has had a very futuristic and open minded leading style, Dr Al-Zeerah and his board of directors are always open to listen to new ideas and to receive both positive and negative criticism. This strategy of the management of IHB lead to have an interactive relationship between owners and management, and employees, then it would, in general, foster an internal environment that is supportive and humanistic.

Characteristics of Members Personal characteristics of the members of IHB also affect the climate prevailing in the organization. For example IHB has well educated, ambitious and young employees and doctors .this might inculcate an environment of competitiveness, calculated risk-taking, and frankness of opinions.

Organizational Size In a small sized organization it is much easier to foster a climate for creativity and innovation or to establish a participative king of management with greater stress on horizontal distribution of responsibilities. On the other hand, in IHB which has around 100 doctors and 400 employees, it is easier to have a more authoritative kind of management with stress on vertical distribution of responsibilities. This in turn leads to distinct environments.

Culture Characteristics Positive Characteristics • The Visiting professors program allows people to have special medical care that’s not available in Bahrain by professionals that visit for few days; this means international health care, locally. • Other than doctors, most of IHB employees are Bahrainis, the management of IHB encourage to have as much as possible of Bahraini workforce, all the way from business office accountants to cleaners.

IHB has been a sponsor for a lot of charity organizations, and other than that IHB organizes few charity events from time to time .Further more it sponsors many companies and national events.

The hospital is a non-profit organization although it does not provide free services. The profit is given back to charity organizations and charity projects.

IHB has well qualified doctors and high technology equipments which help to keep the good reputation of the hospital.

Negative Characteristics • Its located in an unstable area (politically), IHB had suffered from riot damages in the past few years during political demonstrations, which affects workers who care for their safety as well. • Overpriced services is one main negative issue that stops many people from getting medical care in private hospitals which leaves them to the upper class .

There are no enough Bahraini doctors in IHB although there are many well-qualified Bahraini doctors around.

While the hospital is busy like a Bee hive in the morning, lack of professional clinics in the evening is one major issue.

Employees are underpaid. this might lead workers to not work as hard as they can. Takes the motivation away.

What’s helping, what’s not, what needs to be changed? After studying the internal culture of the IHB, we found out that one of the most important characteristic that’s helping the hospital to improve is the visiting doctors program .it helps to create a climate of professionalism .furthermore the policy of employing as much bahraini’s as they can has helped to give the hospital the since of nationality. Moreover the charity work can surely maintain the good name and reputation of the hospital . On the other hand , overpriced services and lack of bahraini doctors along with underpaying employees could seriously hold back the progress of this orgnization.

How to change what needs to be changed • The IHB needs to reconcider the prices , and price its services to a reasonalble price . this scheme should help to attract more customers from different class of the society and this certainly will help the progress . • Bahraini proffesionals should be hired . a lot of bahraini doctors are well qualifed and well educated and have a lot of experience . adding more bahraini to crew will enhance the scene of trust in local doctors and will attract more bahraini doctors to apply for jobs in IHB . • Underpaid employees should be paid more , by reducing the chairty amount and increasing salaries . by this method . workers will be more motivated and will work harder . 9

IHB Mission and vission IHB mission statement is “providing quality medical care for all ages, regardless of race, or creed and regardless of their circumstances and ability to pay” . This means health care for all levels of people, no matter what their income or race is. And it’s in our opinion very noble. On the other hand, the vision is brief and simple; it states that “to be ultimate private hospital in Bahrain” .however the mission statement is not in sync with the prices of the services of IHB. So either they reshape the prices plan. Or they let go of the “ability to pay” part of the mission statement.
