Theory
Explanation

Definition
Using 10 pt. font, define the theory of collection of theories. Response should include information from the slides and/or the articles. Can include your opinion if backed up by evidence, but should not only be your opinion. Make sure to include the components of the theory if applicable. Do not provide examples here.

Scene
Describe the scene you will reference. Set up the situation to include where it occurs in the movie and the plot overall.

Character
Describe the character and/or characters in order to give us a reference related to the situation you will reference. Dorri: the educated daughter of a Persianimmigrant who buys a gun to protect his shop.

Example
Give a detailed example of the theory and tell us why this illustrates the theory. Refer to the definition and key components of the theory as much as possible. Be as specific as possible. It is okay to add your opinion if it is backed up by evidence you cite about the scene and character. Do not make the reader infer anything about the scene or character. For example, you discuss intellectual stimulation as part of transformational leadership it should be defined. After her father has been escorted out, the shop owner asks Dorri to select which ammunition she wants for the gun. Dorri has leadership traits that make her a natural leader. She was able to assess the situation and analyze those involved. Her dad has quite a temper so she selected the ammunition in a the red box (blanks). This decision ended up saving a life in a later scene. Her mother is present in the scene and unlike the father is very mellow. Dorri is a combination of the two and shows traits from both parents.

Trait Based Theories

The trait based leadership theory makes the assumptions that people are born with inherited traits that are particularly suited to leadership and that those who possess the correct combination of these traits will be a successful leader. ”Galton (1869) argued that the personal qualities deļ¬ning effective leadership were naturally endowed, passed from generation to generation. The practical implication of this view, of course, is that leadership quality is immutable and, therefore, not amenable to developmental interventions” (Zaccar, 2007). This model consists of three areas in which we believe develops a successful leader. The three aspects of the “Kaleidoscope” are business, people, and self savvy. The first dimension is business savvy, which includes four competencies: Numberwise, Planning, Strategic Decision-Making & Superior Technical Service. The second dimension is people savvy, and it also includes four competencies: Interpersonal Communication, Networked, Coaching/Training & Superior Expressive Service. And the last dimension of competencies is self savvy, and it includes four competencies: Professionalism, Time Management/Priorities, Self Development & Spirit of Optimism. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) is a 360° Instrument that assesses the characteristics of a leader and helps with self-discovery as well as how an individual measures up in the eyes of those with whom they work. It “measures, explains and demonstrates to individuals the key factors that set truly exceptional leaders apart from marginal ones [as well as] differentiates effective and ineffective leaders at all organizational levels.”

At a gun shop a Persian man Farhad and his daughter Dorri are buying a handgun. The shop owner gets upset with the Persian speaking Farsi and the two men quickly escalate into angry words. Farhad is kicked out of the shop. The night prior to the scene I will discuss, the 2 cops pull over a black couple. Ryan slowly physically searches Christine groping her. Hansen realizes his partner is out of line, but remains quiet.

Skills and Competencies (Use HTM Model)

Hansen: An idealistic younger cop is paired with a racist white veteran cop who pulls over a black couple the night before this example takes place.

Hansen has traits and values that were not made present in the situation with the black couple. However he used his people savvy skills to talk to Lt. Dixon about changing partners. The next day he encounters Cameron again and with 2 other officers points guns at him, he makes the decision to stand up for a man who he had disrespected the night before. He used his networking skills to convince the other officers to lower their guns. He used his strategic decision making skills to save Cameron by claiming he was a good friend. He stayed professional when speaking to Cameron despite the tense situation. He used his intuition to build a relationship, and had a quality one-on-one interaction with Cameron in an effort to improve open communication. He also convinces the other officers to let him go with a warning. Ryan arrives on the scene to save her. He says he won't hurt her and tries to free her as there is spilled gas and a burning wreck nearby. The fire races toward the inverted car, other cops pull Ryan out. He goes back into the car and saves Christine just before it explodes in a fireball. Christine is taken away badly shaken as she looks back at the heroic John Ryan. When Ryan sees the fear in her eyes as she realizes who he is, he is faced with a moment of realization. He is not being viewed as a hero by his follower and makes a conscious decision to do whatever he must to become an exceptional leader in her eyes and risks his life to do so.

Behavior Based Theories (Use MLQ or LPI)

Arriving at an accident scene Ryan runs to an upside down car, someone is trapped inside. It is Christine Thayer and already scared, she becomes distraught when she recognizes Ryan, and refuses his help.

Ryan: A racist veteran cop who groped Christine the night before. In this scene he shows a different side by risking his life.

Theory
Leader/Me mber Exchange (LMX)

Definition
Leader Member Exchange Theory is based on the 3 phases of leadership (Stranger: follower does not trust but willing to follow for certain benefits; Acquaintance: Begin to trust each other and test relationship; & Partnership: high quality exchanges, negotiations, reciprocating influences & group interested motives on both sides). During these phases a leader and follower progressively develop their relationship based on social exchanges.

Scene
(1:39) Jean Cabot talks on the phone to a friend, saying she doesn't understand why she is angry all the time. Hanging up she slips and falls down the stairs. She lies there whimpering waiting to be helped. (0:26) Daniel returns home from work to find his daughter hiding under the bed. She is afraid of bullets.

Character
Jean Cabot: the irritated and pampered wife of Rick, a white district attorney.

Example
The relationship between Jean and her housekeeper, Maria represents Leader Member Exchange Theory. Jean naturally has power over Maria, being the Employer. Maria is constantly being yelled at about things like unloading the dishwasher before Jean wakes up. Even though she is treated poorly she obeys because there is a benefit for her (a paycheck). It isn’t in her job description and Maria could have left Jean lying on the floor but she doesn’t. This is when their relationship begins to build trust and they move to the acquaintance phase. When they arrive home from the hospital, Maria brings her a cup of tea and the two women hug. Jean calls Maria her best friend. At this point they have created a partnership and have a high quality exchange.

Path/Goal Theory

Path-Goal Leadership Theory incorporates how a “leader motivates a follower in order to accomplish a goal” while maintaining a dyadic relationship by clarifying goals, creating a directive-path, being supportive & promoting a participative atmosphere. Leaders may be both achievement oriented (task) and relationship oriented.

Daniel: kindhearted, Hispanic locksmith. He is a quiet, family man.

This father sees that his young daughter is still very fearful of bullets from when a bullet flew through her window when they lived in a bad part of the neighborhood. He is able to use his skills as a storyteller to connect with his daughter. His goal is to free his daughter (follower) of fear. He lays down beside the bed and shows that he understands her fear. As he talks with her he encourages her to tell him what she is feeling and express her fears. He strategically thinks of a story that will appeal to his daughter and motivate her to come out from under her bed. He tells the daughter a story about an invisible cloak that was given to him by a fairy when he was younger. He gives it to her and convinces her that if she wears it, it will keep her safe. Through his supportive and nurturing nature he is able to create a dyadic relationship and create an outcome that benefits them both. . Lucien offers to pay Anthony $500 for each person. Anthony drops the Asian illegal immigrants off in Chinatown. Leaving them $40 for some chop suey, he drives off pleased with himself. After Anthony had an encounter with Cameron he begins to transform as an individual and able to make a good decision in this scene. He is able to connect with his values and morals as a leader and turns down the money in order to save the immigrants. In prior scenes he is the alpha male with his fellow car thieve but makes poor choices as a leader. His maturity level has drastically changed by this scene having been enlightened. Effective leadership varies, not only with the person or group that is being influenced, but it will also depend on the task, job or function that needs to be accomplished. In this case he realized what had to be done and turned down the money.

Situational Leadership

The Situational Leadership Theory is founded on the idea that there is there is no solitary "best" style of leadership. The Hersey-Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory rests on two fundamental concepts: Leadership Style & Individual or Group's Maturity Level. Their model allows you to analyze the situation using their levels of maturity, competency and commitment to decide on which Leadership Behavior/ Style would be most appropriate. Your leadership style will vary from one person to another depending on followers’ competencies and commitment in their task areas.

Anthony brings the van to the chop shop, where they find several Thai or Cambodian illegal immigrants chained up in the back.

Anthony: A young black man who is a car thief and constantly theorizing on society and race.

Theory
Transformational Leadership

Definition
“Transformational leadership occurs when one or more persons engage with others in such a way that leaders and followers raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality”- James MacGregor Burns. Based on their values and morals a leader should be able to connect and engage their follower in order to achieve a higher sense of performance, fulfillment, and purpose for both parties. His theory is concerned with emotions, values, ethics, standards, and long-term goals. It encompasses 4 factors: Inspirational Motivation, Idealized Influence Charisma, Intellectual Stimulation, Individualized Consideration.

Scene
(1:15)Driving alone his black Navigator, Cameron comes to a stop sign. Anthony and Peter try to carjack them at gunpoint. Cameron fights back and gets the gun away from Anthony, he starts kicking him on the ground. A police car sees the scuffle from a distance and starts toward them. Peter takes off and Anthony and Cameron get in the SUV and drive off.

Character
Cameron: A black, successful Hollywood director who has had a negative encounter with a racist LAPD officer one night prior.

Example
After a short chase two police cars corner the Lincoln. Anthony is afraid to get out, Cameron does get out and confronts the police. They are let go and Cameron drives away with a shocked Anthony still in the passenger seat. Cameron gives Anthony his gun back and tells him he is an embarrassment as he drops him off. As a black man, Cameron is constantly dealing with racial discrimination. In this scene he is being disrespected by a fellow black man trying to steal his car. Rather than turning Anthony in and letting him further solidify the stereotypes of young black men when the police pull him over, Cameron allows him to stay in the car. This action is able to engage and shock his follower. His actions evoke many emotions in Anthony and leave him bewildered as he re-enters the car and drives away in silence. This selfless act of leadership is able to transform his follower. He used inspirational motivation to change Anthony’s frame of mind. His charisma influenced the building of trust and establishes Cameron as a role model. He stimulates him intellectually and makes Anthony challenge his prior way of thinking. Individual Consideration is demonstrated when Cameron gives Anthony his gun back and tells him he is an embarrassment as he drops him off. His actions and behavior encourage self-actualization and force Anthony to take a deeper look at himself. This is the event that enlightens Anthony and later allows him to turn down money to help a group of immigrants from being sold.
