While walking down that gloomy street, all I saw were strangers who reminded
me a lot of robots. Robots who were as if programmed to do something but lost an
essential part of living. They forgot how it was to be and feel happy. They were always
busy and looked stressed. I began to think of whom I was and if I was anything like
them. I was 25-year-old Roger Salazar who worked at an insurance firm to fulfill the
dream that my Dad wanted for me. I worked on a busy 9 to 5 schedule doing the routine
job of offering insurances to customers. I occasionally was screamed at by customers
and wasn’t making a lot of money but I was able to make ends meet. I was missing
something. I had lost the key that wound me up every morning to face the world with a
smile. So I then thought that I was a lot like those strangers and just like them I too
forgot how it was to be happy.
That weekend, I went back to my hometown to somehow do some “soul
searching”. I went back to my old school to rekindle some inspiration or to remind me
what it was that made me happy and how I lost it in the process of growing up. I
stumbled upon a trophy displayed in a glass cabinet next to a picture that I had taken
back in high school. The picture exhibited this beautiful landscape with misty clouds
meeting the sun that was just peaking out in the horizon. I took that photo on the
morning that I was supposed to be interviewed for an internship for a well-known
photographer. That photo won me first place in a local competition. I then went home
and looked for the box that contained other picture I took and my old camera.
The next morning I went to the hill just in the back of our neighborhood to watch
the sunrise. That hill was famous for giving a spectacular view of the sunrise and people
often hiked up there to witness it. That location was the exact place that I took that

landscape photo. I brought my camera with me just for old time sake. There were a lot
of people there to watch but a couple with their little boy caught my attention. I sat just
behind the couple as to not block their view. The boy looked so ecstatic waiting for the
sunrise. I then took overlooking pictures of our neighborhood and it reminded me of how
long it has been since I went back and that so many things have changed. As the sun
came beaming through the horizon, I took a photo and hoped for the best. I looked at
the photo and it showed the little boy looking back at his parents with an impeccable
smile. It was smile that possessed all the secrets in the world. A smile that can make
you believe in hope, love, and life. It was a smile that contained nothing but pure
concentrated happiness.
His smile was contagious since I too began to feel the warm and love that he
emanated. It was the feeling that I was looking for. It was that feeling that I longing for.
Sudden flashbacks of my childhood came back like the time that I got my first camera
and my first win at a photography competition. Photography was my calling. It flowed
through my veins and I couldn’t deny it. I entered the picture in a competition and
someone asked me what is the title of the photograph. I then entitled it “The rebirth”.
