2 Criminal Justice System In this paper I will discuss the components of the criminal justice system as well as the criminal justice process. I will also discuss the structure of the government and how it relates to the criminal justice system. There are three main components of the criminal justice system. The three main components of the criminal justice system are police, courts and corrections. The police are used to “maintain order and enforce the law.” The courts are where criminals are prosecuted. The courts also are used to “seek justice” and discover the truth about criminal investigations. The corrections are the part of the justice system that includes jails and prisons, probation and parole, and things like house arrest or tether. The corrections department is also used for the purposes of “punishing, rehabilitating, and ensuring public safety. The criminal justice process is simply the process in which a criminal is prosecuted. When someone commits a crime they are arrested and must appear before a judge whom at that time will decide whether or not to punish them further or let them go. Anytime a crime is committed, the courts decide what type of punishment the criminal should get depending on what the crime was. Once a criminal is punished for their crime, the court decides whether or not to continue to monitor them after they are released from jail or prison. This is called probation and parole. Many times when a certain crime is committed

3 Criminal Justice System by the same person multiple times, they tend to face higher charges for continuing to commit the same crime. This is known as a habitual offender. The structure of the government plays a big part in the criminal justice system. The government is made up of three sections which are the legislative, judiciary, and executive. All of these departments help to prevent crime at three levels. These three levels are “federal, state, and local.”(Dresden, E.,(2012), “The Structure of the Criminal Justice System”) All of these departments and levels help to prevent and fight crime in their own way.
