Why are cup-feeding safer than bottle feeding ?

Why are cup-feeding safer than bottle feeding ?

1. Easy to clean 2. Less likely to be carried around = bacteria can’t breed 3. Less risk of diarrhea, ear infection, tooth decay 4. Somebody has to feed the baby more bonding 5. Does not interfere with suckling at the breast 6. It enables a baby to control his own intake

How to feed the baby by cup
1. Wash your hands 2. Hold baby sitting upright or semi-upright 3. Place estimated amount of milk into the cup 4. Hold the small cup of milk to the baby’s lips >Tip the cup so the milk just reaches lower lip >Cup rest lightly on the lower lip >Edges of the cup touches outer part of the upper lip

How to feed the baby by cup – cont…

5. The baby becomes alert- opens mouth and eyes LBW takes milk with his

tongue

FT may suck, spilling some of it

6. DO NOT pour milk… let him take it himself 7. When he has enough – he closes his mouth 8. Measure intake over 24 hours – not just each feed.

Feeding a baby by cup

Volume of milk
Pointers: • The amount of feed varies – regardless of method • Offer little extra – baby decides • If takes less than computed – give more next feed or when hungry • LBW needs only very small amount – colostrum

Amount of milk to give to babies feed
• Weight 2.5 kg or more • 150 ml / kg body weight / day • divide into 8 feeds given every 3 hrs • Weight less than 2.5 kg (LBW) • start with 60ml / kg body weight • increase total volume by 20 ml / day • until he is taking a total of 200ml/kg/day • divide total into 8-12 feeds (every 2-3 hrs) • Continue until baby weights 1800g full BF • Check 24 hr intake. Size of individual feed may vary

Problem:
• • • • • Age: 2 weeks old baby Wt: 3.8 kg Volume of milk baby needs ??? How much in 24 hrs ??? How much milk per feed ???

• Establish the confidence of the mother that she CAN DO IT
