DB211 – Database Design ()
Instructor:
Unit 6, Assignment A
Student:
Assignment Instructions:
Please visit oracle.com, review the system requirements and download and install
the (free) Oracle 11g Express Edition version appropriate for your system.
Document the process to create your own guide for an Oracle install (software
requirements, downloads, steps, screenshots, etc.). Even if you encounter technical
problems, please document them for this assignment (screenshots, thought process, steps
taken, outcomes). You will get full credit for your time and effort!
Before starting, please backup your system and consider creating a virtual machine
by using Windows Virtual PC, VirtualBox or another virtualization software
available to you, instead of pursuing an install directly on your system. Please don’t
jump into a full Oracle 11g Standard/Enterprise install for your 64 bit Windows
system but rather try using a VM as in the examples below. The Express Edition
would be sufficient for the purpose of the course and a much more manageable
install.
This assignment may take a substantial amount of time to complete, depending on any
additional VM creation or your OS downloads and the Oracle download and install in
itself. Please expect and plan for this but don’t stress too much. The purpose of this
exercise is not to test your install skills, but to encourage you to explore an Oracle
Database, read on the subject, troubleshoot problems encountered and document the
process. If you need additional time please reach out to me. I will consider all reasonable
requests.
Example 1: Windows Virtual PC is already available on your system if you're running
Windows 7 so you can:
1. use the student DreamSpark por to download a Windows Operating System
(Windows 7, 32 bit) and save the .iso file on your computer - you will be able to
use the file directly in your virtual machine
2. on your computer create a virtual machine (in Windows 7 - Start - Windows
Virtual PC)
3. install the OS from step 1 on your virtual machine created in step 2
4. download Oracle 11g Express Edition for Win 32 and install it on your virtual
machine:http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/products/expressedition/downloads/index.html.
Example 2: Virtual Box is a good option. I would recommend:
1. downloading Virtual Box and installing it on your host
system: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/serverstorage/virtualbox/downloads/index.html,

2. downloading and installing Windows 7 Professional 32 bit from
DreamSpark: DreamSpark login page on the virtual machine created in step 1.
Credentials can be requested from the Globe Service Desk
([email protected]) if this would be the first time you use the
system.
3. downloading and installing Oracle 11g Express Edition for Win 32 bit from
Oracle:http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/products/expressedition/downloads/index.html on the Windows 7 32 bit VM.
50 points , due Sunday
