Public input
sought in
landscape
project
by Katie Friedman
Correspondent

At the Maple Lake City Council’s most recent meeting, Tuesday, December 16, Mayor Lynn
Kissock initiated a conversation
about choosing a site for the city
to begin its participation in the
Community Roadside Landscaping Partnership Program. With
this initiative – an effort to improve safety and aesthetics along
Highway 55 – the Minnesota Department of Transportation
(MnDOT) provides technical and
financial assistance to communities interested in landscaping the
highway rights-of-way. While
participating cities do pay for the
improvements, MnDOT will reimburse for the estimated cost of
providing landscape materials,
including plants, and can also
provide design personnel, at no
added cost, to work with the city.
Funds or in-kind services to install and maintain the materials
are expected to come from within
individual communities.
Noting a MnDOT representative’s suggestion to begin with
one intersection, Kissock suggested starting with the western
approach to the city, while Councilmembers Bart Lauer and Deb
Geyen expressed preference for
beginning work on the east end.
The area between the high school
and St. Timothy’s was also discussed.
The council will vote on a
starting site at its next meeting,
and in the meantime seeks input
from the public on this matter.
Local residents are invited to
leave comments and suggestions
on the city’s Facebook page or at

Wastewater future
is looking up
by Brenda Erdahl
Correspondent

Wastewater costs will go up
slightly for users in Maple Lake,
Annandale and Howard Lake in
2015, but rates weren’t the main
topic of discussion at the Thursday, Dec. 18, Annandale-Maple
Lake-Howard Lake Wastewater
Commission meeting.
The commission approved
increasing rates from $5.75 to
$6.25, raising the average
monthly user charge from $26
to $28, effective Jan. 1, 2015,
for all three cities.
The topic that generated the
most discussion in the short
half-hour meeting, however,
was how the cashflow outlook
had taken a turn for the better
since June.
Six months ago cashflow
projections had shown a lower
cashflow than was anticipated,
secretary Kelly Hinnenkamp
said.
That all changed in the late

summer when all three cities experienced a lot of commercial
activity. New businesses started
popping up and they all needed
sewer access.
In total, Hinnenkamp estimates the new businesses generated an additional $317,000 in
sewer access charges over what
the Wastewater Commission
had expected.
Commissioners knew of the
increase by their August meeting, but the numbers hadn’t
been factored into the budget
yet, so they held off on approving any new rates, postponing
that decision for their December
meeting.
At that time several scenarios
for rate increases were on the
table, including one that kept
the user rate at $5.75, but a $10
base rate would increase the average monthly charge to $36.

Silent Santa brings joy to Maple Lake
This year the Maple Lake
Silent Santa program helped 27
families, all who are Maple
Lake residents. In those families, there were 64 children who
received gifts. Gifts were donated from the public at six
local businesses: Irish Blessings
Coffeehouse, Star Bank, Costume Shoppe, Floral Shoppe
and the Dollar General. Mone-

tary donations were also received from several Maple
Lake organizations and individuals. The monetary donations
went to supply those in need
with winter coats, hats, mittens
and boots. Each family also received a box of food donations,
which was collected during the
month of November at St. Timothy’s Church. The week of De-

cember 8 – 12, 20-plus volunteers spent their evenings sorting food and toys, shopping for
winter items and distributing
items for the families. Liz and
Luke Elsenpeter, 2014 chairs of
the program, thanked all those
who donated a gift, money or
their time to make 2014 a successful Silent Santa year.

After a lengthy discussion
last week, including dozens of
comments from concerned citizens, the Maple Lake Township
Board voted to close a one-mile
stretch of Donnelly Drive between Dempsey Avenue NW
and Dillon Ave. NW and to rebuild the road south of its current location.
The original request came
from the Pribyl family, which
owns many acres of land surrounding the current road. The
Pribyls wanted to remove the
current road to make way for an
addition to be built on their
home. The Prybils offered to
foot the bill both for the removal
of the half-mile stretch of road
and for the construction of a replacement road about a quartermile south.

The discussion began during
a township meeting on November 24, but board members opted
to continue the discussion at the
next meeting to allow residents
time to voice their opinions. Issues of safety along the current
stretch of road, which travels
along Maple Lake and has a
steep bank down to the lake itself, have since been brought up.
Some suggested that removing
the roadway would be a good
idea with regards to safety in
case of an accident. Others
pointed out that Donnelly Drive
is often used by people who do
not live in the area as a cutacross road between County
Road 37 and Highway 55, and
noted that vehicles travel at
speeds higher than the posted 55
mile-per-hour limit.

Brute’s
Bleat
by Harold Brutlag
Now that we’ve gone by the shortest day of the year and are into
the winter season just before Christmas, I went to the internet to
learn a bit more about the winter solstice. This explanation won’t
change the price of rice in China, as the saying goes, but nevertheless it refreshed my memory: “A solstice is an astronomical event
that occurs twice each year as the Sun reaches its highest or lowest
excursion relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere.
The solstices, together with the equinoxes, are connected with the
seasons. In many cultures the solstices mark either the beginning or
the midpoint of winter and summer.
The word solstice is derived from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere
(to stand still), because at the solstices, the Sun stands still in declination; that is, the seasonal movement of the Sun's path (as seen
from Earth) comes to a stop before reversing direction.
At latitudes in the temperate zone, the summer solstice marks the
day when the sun appears highest in the sky. However, in the tropics,
the sun appears directly overhead (called the subsolar point) some
days (or even months) before the solstice and again after the solstice,
which means the subsolar point occurs twice each year.
The term solstice can also be used in a broader sense, as the date
(day) when this occurs. The day of the solstice is either the longest
day of the year (in summer) or the shortest day of the year (in winter)
for any place outside of the tropics.”

I haven’t been out fishing since Dec. 13th, but that could change
during the holidays. In the hunting department I think I’m about to
hang up the shotgun for the pheasant season which ends Jan. 4,
2015. Daryl Hennen and I took a day off last Thursday and hunted
west of Willmar. It was a great day weather-wise and the dogs
seemed to enjoy themselves in the standing corn and cattails although they didn’t find much bird scent. Hennen had a shot at a
rooster in the first patch of standing corn we hunted, but that was

Travel is so broadening. Sitting on your tush for six hours
or so is bound to have some effect. This particular travel
episode involved a Christmas
concert at a school in Watertown, Wisconsin. Grand-daughter is a student there, away from
her folks in a dormitory. Wife
and I decided to make a minivacation out of the trip. We

scheduled two nights in a Madison motel, picking a really
lousy day for a 315-mile drive.
Fog prevented us from seeing
any scenery, although I saw a
field full of bison. They were
clustered under a sign in the
pasture that said “Bison” or I
could have mistaken them for
cows. Wife was driving. She
saw the white line on the road

the only rooster we put into the air. We flushed a couple of hens and
Vanna found a dead hen in some cattails the hawks were feeding on.
The second spot we hunted had tracks, but we didn’t put any birds
in the air. Meanwhile back in my Suburban, I found out I didn’t
have any power steering, so we stopped in Madison at Erickson’s
Used Car garage and they got us back on the road by re-clamping a
faulty return hose. We did some more looking at likely hunting
spots, but decided to call it a day and headed back to ML. Kip Blizil
tells me his troops found limits of pheasants on their second run to
Heron, SD and came back with reservations for next fall’s hunting
season.
.
.
Vanna sniffed out a hen and rooster on our
Saturday walk in Ney Park and on Sunday we spotted six or seven
pheasant hens crossing the township road heading for Potter’s standing corn field which I figure is an indication things could get better
next year.

There are lots of images of Christmas in holiday decorations that
come alive each year in Maple Lake as well as other places, a Christian holiday honoring the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. Christmas has evolved into a worldwide religious and secular celebration,
incorporating many pre-Christian, pagan traditions into the festivities along the way. Today, Christmas is a time for family and friends
to get together and often exchange gifts, something we hope will
never change. One of the unusual stories about Christmas happened
in the trenches of World War 1 in Europe when both sides (Germans
and the English) ceased fighting each other on Christmas, crawled
out of their trenches and exchanged greetings and some gifts as the
story goes. It’s about as good an example of “Peace on Earth, Good
Will Toward Men” as I can come up with for Christmas 2014, a year
that is winding down with riots, demonstrations, needless shootings,
cyber hacking, national bantering about whose to blame, threat of
retaliation, etc.
In spite of all that and the commercialism that has taken away
much of the true meaning of Christmas, that a Saviour was born, I
extend my best wishes for a Merry Christmas to the Messenger subscribers.

and little else.
In parts of Wisconsin, radio
stations are hard to find, unless
you like hard rock or grain price
reports. We listened to CDs.
Later, we concentrated on our
temperature gauge, which crept
up to a place it hadn't been before. Since our gas gauge periodically goes wacky, we
assumed both gauges had decided to quit, but in that part of
the state, garages are scarce.
Adding water to the overflow
tank corrected the gauge.
Wisconsin is full of Packer
fans. They seem to congregate
where Germans settled to open
breweries. It's prudent to think
of all Wisconsin-licensed cars
to be operated by drunks, especially the tailgaters, who may be
confusing two different kinds of
tailgating.
Our destination was a
church-affiliated school, so
Sunday morning we decided to
find a church near our motel. In
Wisconsin, if you tell your GPS
to find something called Holy
Cross or St. Paul's, it goes nuts
and provides hundreds of re-

sults. None of the tourist magazines in the motel showed
churches, but they all showed
bars and breweries. It was Wisconsin, after all.
We've met a lot of pastors,
since Son-in-law is one, and
while living in the South,
Daughter invited many of them
to Maple Lake. There are lots of
people who know our place, but
don't know us. When we picked
the closest Holy Cross, it turned
out to be one of our former pastors who greeted us, and he didn't know our house as well as he
knew us.
Fog was with us for the entire trip. We actually slowed
down while driving. Wisconsin
drivers, of course, maintained
their normal speed. Evidently
they didn't notice the fog, having self-induced Leininkugelfogged eyes anyway.
It was a wonderful trip. The
concert was great. Granddaughter was happy. The car engine didn't melt. We got about
100 miles per gallon of windshield washer fluid. But there's
no place like home.

Another did not include a
base rate, instead the user rate
would increase to $6.25 in the
first year, for an average
monthly charge of $28 before
moving to $8 in the following
year, which would have set the
average fee at $36.
“Earlier in the year we were
running cashflows to project the
2015 budget and cashflows
were lower than anticipated.
Commissioners were looking at
a lot of variables because it is
such a new plant,” Hinnenkamp
said later in an interview.
“We were at a point where
we were not at a comfortable
level. We thought maybe we
would have to increase rates. It
appeared we could potentially
have an issue.”
But the additional access
charges due to the economic
growth in all three cities put the
commission in a better position.
“There was not an immediate
concern
anymore,”
Hinnenkamp said.
“There are a lot of moving
parts, but the bottom line is
we’re comfortable with this
cashflow,” she told the board
Thursday night.
In other business, the commission:
• Learned from Plant Operator Joe Haller that primary tests
show the plant well within compliance, and flow results
showed that peaks are down

Board approves program to standardize 911 call response
by John Holler
Correspondent

When many 911 calls are
placed, the callers are frantic –
whether to report a home invasion, domestic abuse, a medical
emergency or a fire – and often
the course of the conversation between a dispatcher and the caller
can get muddled and some important details lost.
At the Dec. 16 meeting of the
Wright County Board of Commissioner. Lt. Annette Habisch of
the sheriff’s department came before the board seeking approval of
the purchase of the “Total Response” emergency call handling
system with PowerPhone Inc.
The purpose of the new phone
answering system is to create a
protocol of what specific questions to ask given the type of
emergency being reported. The
system would have prepared responses to maintain uniformity in
how the calls are taken.
“It’s a system that will assist
the dispatchers with quality in call
taking – in other words, handling
every type of domestic call the
same way every time so that there
is consistency and the right questions are being asked for a respon-

der and victim safety,” Habisch
said.
The system would cover just
about any eventuality that arises
from 911 calls, ranging from
criminal activity to reports of domestic violence to medical emergencies to structure fires. Another
benefit of having a uniform system is that 911 calls are often used
as evidence in court cases and
having a protocol that lays out
what questions need to be asked
that are critical in maintaining the
integrity of the procedure as well
as giving emergency responders
as much information as possible
before they arrive on the scene.
“It’s also a good tool for evidence preservation,” Habisch
said. “The protocol cues the dispatcher to ask the questions and
to talk to the caller about what
they should be doing.”
The board unanimously approved the contract, which has a
price tag of $40,796. The cost will
be covered through the 911 funds
that are collected that appear on
phone billing statements with no
cost to the county budget.
In other items on the Dec. 16
agenda, the board:
* Approved the 2015 budget

and levy. The board made some
line item changes to the final
budget and levy to reduce the totals by approximately $74,000,
making the 2015 budget at $106
million with a certified levy – the
amount paid through property tax
– at $53 million.
* Scheduled a negotiations
committee of the whole meeting
for 10 a.m. following the Dec. 23
board meeting to discuss union
negotiation strategies.
* Tabled discussion of proposed revisions to the county’s
drug and alcohol testing policy
until the board can get a definition
of a “safety sensitive” position.
* Appointed Martyn Dibben to
a three-year term on the parks
commission. Dibben will represent District 1 on the commission.
* Adopted a resolution conveying tax forfeit parcels to the
City of St. Michael.
* Scheduled the 2015 Employee Recognition Ceremony
for 10 a.m. at the March 3, 2015,
board meeting. The annual ceremony honors individual and
group achievements as well as
employees who have reached
five-year-increment anniversaries
as county employees.

* Confirmed two at-large appointments to the Bertram Chain
of Lakes Advisory Council – Kim
Hewson-Garber and Wes Olson.
The vote passed 4-1. Commissioner Charlie Borrell voted
against it, citing that the roles of
the city and county haven’t been
defined in terms of what portions
of the park will be their responsibility to maintain. Borrell has
asked that such a document be
created that clearly defines those
roles and, until that happens, he
won’t vote in favor of matters
dealing with the park.
* Approved a service contract
between the county and Corinna
Township for planning and zoning issues.
* Was introduced to Joseph
Ihrig, a new network specialist in
the Information Technology department.
* Approved a draft plan for
how the county will combat
aquatic invasive species in county
lakes.
* Approved increasing the
change fund in the license bureau
from $1,000 to $2,000.
* Approved a $100 change
fund in the county coordinator’s
office.

“standard,” explained that the
Community Development Fund
had paid for a property purchase,

improvements to Jude’s Industrial Park Sixth Addition. The
final bond payment for these improvements was made in 2013,
and the city’s auditors have recommended that its negative balance of $98,971 be transferred to
the General Fund.
• Authorized a feasibility report on potential industrial property, at an estimated cost of

$8,000. This report, to be prepared by Stantec, will provide
more detailed information on issues associated with a site just
north of the existing industrial
park, and a second, north of the
airport, for use as comparative information. The report will include sketches and soil boring
samples, and will look at required
site improvements including
drainage, rough grading, street
improvements, water main and
sanitary sewer. The council’s authorization is a prerequisite to the
pursuit of partial funding through
the Central Minnesota Initiative
Foundation.
• Authorized a budget not to
exceed $150 for the Municipal
Development Group to print 100
copies of a newly-designed promotional brochure.

• Approved a consent agenda
that included approval of a contractor’s request for Payment
Number Two to Gertken Bros. in
the amount of $1,200 for topsoil
and seeding work attached to the
2014 Street Improvement Project. This request covers work
completed last fall that was not
included in Payment Number
One due to paperwork delays. A
modified invoice states that payment for seeding is limited to 50
percent of work completed until
grass growth can be verified in
the spring, and a five percent retainage until the project is ready
for final acceptance.
These actions were made in
the absence of Councilmember
Shar Dircks.

Ramsey Lake fatal
snowmobile accident
Sheriff Joe Hagerty reports
that on Sunday, December 21st, at
approximately 12:51 a.m., the
Wright County Sheriff’s Office
communications center received
a call of a snowmobile accident
with injuries on Ramsey Lake.
Upon arrival deputies found that
the accident occurred along the
shoreline near 5626 33rd St. NW
in Maple Lake Township.
The accident involved a single
Polaris 800 Edge snowmobile
being driven by Charles Webb,
age 20, of Maple Lake, and his
passenger, Reid Ferguson, age 21,
of St. Francis. Deputies observed
that parties at the scene had begun
CPR on Ferguson, who was unresponsive and not breathing.
Deputies assisted with CPR and
administered an AED (automated
external defibrillator). Maple
Lake Rescue and Allina Ambulance arrived on scene and took
over medical treatment. Shortly

thereafter Ferguson was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Webb was treated for unknown
internal injuries and transported
by Allina to Buffalo Hospital.
Webb was later transferred to
North Memorial Hospital and arrested for criminal vehicular
homicide. Webb will be booked
into the Wright County Jail after
being released from the hospital.
Preliminary investigation reveals that Webb and Ferguson
were traveling at a high rate of
speed on Ramsey Lake approaching the shoreline, when Webb attempted to stop suddenly,
throwing both Webb and Ferguson from the sled. Neither Webb
nor Ferguson were wearing helmets. It is also believed that alcohol was a factor in the accident.
An investigation is being conducted by the Wright County Investigations
Unit
and
Recreational Services Unit.

(2001 Hwy. 25 N, Buffalo), the Festival of Trees will be open daily
from Dec. 3 to Jan. 9, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with Tuesday nights open

Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into
nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must
fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once
in each row, column, and box. You can figure out the order in
which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already
provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier
it gets to solve the puzzle!

Vandora June Davis was born
to Lars and Minnie (Olson)

small town of Boyd, Minnesota.
Van was baptized and confirmed

After marriage, they remained in

December 24, 2014

Rhonda Carlson’s 3rd grade
students’ winter thoughts.
Ashton Daluge - On December 20th this year I am going to
my Grandma and Grandpa’s
house to open presents. There
are going to be a bunch of people
there. Then on Christmas day in
the morning we will open presents at home.
Penny Erika Hannon - On
Christmas Eve my sister Emily
got a puppy. She was not taking
good care of her so I got her.

School
Penny was the best dog ever.
After a few years we got Jigzy
and Magzy. When Jigzy and
Magzy ran a- way Penny would
call for them. Then one day
Penny was pregnant. She was
throwing up blood. My Mom
and Dad took her to the vet but
it was too late. She died in the
car. I miss Penny so much.
Sarah Jensen - “No Christmas” On Christmas some kids
don’t get gifts like you and I will.
At some churches they have a

thing where you can give a gift
so that on Christmas morning
most kids will get a gift or two
even if they are poor or in the
hospital. I care about everyone
not just me, and it makes me sad
to know that some kids don’t get
presents. I hope others will help
some kids so they can be happy.
Their moms or dads might have
even died. Please help them so
not just you will be happy.
Kelsi Jude - I want to have a
friend stay over-night and go to
Powder ridge over Christmas
break. If I get to have a friend
over we will first go downstairs
to play. Then we will eat lunch
and then go to Powder Ridge.
When we get home we will go
back down stairs and play some
more. Next we will loom in my
room. Then my friend and I will

get our sleeping bags and pillows and turn on a movie and go
to bed. The next day when both
of us are up we will try to find
the elf on the shelf. Then we will
play again. Finally we will eat
lunch and by then it will be time
to take my friend home.
Joey Spike - “A Bad Snow
Day” When it first snowed this
year my Dad and I went to the
farm. When we were backing
out of the garage we got stuck.
Then we called our friends to
help pull us out, but that car didn’t have anywhere to hook a
hitch up to so we had to keep it
at there. Then at the end of the
day my Dad brought the Bobcat
over to our house and we got the
car out.
Ethan O’brien - “No Swinging Today” A kid named Bob

was having a bad day. One day
Bob was outside playing in the
snow. Then his mom looked out
the window. His mom was
happy to see Bob being happy.
Then Bob ran around in the
snow and fell down. He got up
and ran to his swing like a horse.
Later the swing broke. He went
inside and his mom said “time to
go to bed, and so he did.
Mady Payne - “Wishing for
Snow” I wish that there was
more snow so I could go sledding down my Grandma’s hill;
also so my brother could go
snow-boarding with his friend.
I’d like to also make a fort at my
Grandma’s house, or else if we
had enough snow, I could ask
my brother to help me make one
at our house. I am going to ask
my brother to help me make my

wish list, and finally I will ask
my Mom to help me. I make
cookies at my Grandma’s house
and after that I would go down
the hill if it weren’t so hard. In
the summer I want to ride my
bike with my friends, but for
now I’d like to make tunnels in
the snow and after that go jumping in the snow.
Marcus Mitchell - Christmas
is my favorite holiday because
first you get to eat with your
family and then you get to open
presents with them, that is my favorite part. Then what we also
do is play a board game. Last we
say Thank You to everyone for
coming and give them a hug
when we say good-bye. We say
good-bye everyone and give
them a hug. Have a Merry
Christmas!

Donnelly Drive
continued from page 1
“From a liability standpoint,
vacating is a good idea,” said
Township Attorney Michael
Couri (of Couri & Ruppe,
P.L.L.P.), who led the discussion
at the township meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 16. “But does it make
sense traffic wise and convenience wise?”
Due to the safety concerns on
that stretch of Donnelly, board
members also wondered if it
might be better to simply eliminate the road and not replace it,
instead re-routing traffic out to
Highway 55 along Dempsey and
Dillon.
More than 100 residents, including the fire chief and postmaster, attended last week’s
meeting.
If the original stretch of road
were to be vacated and not replaced, residents would have to
drive about a mile further to reach
town using Dempsey or Dillon
Avenues as alternate routes. Fire
Chief Todd Borell was in attendance and said the new route
would not impact the fire department at all.
“It’s not a fire department
issue because we’re going to go a
different direction anyhow,” he
said, adding that fire trucks would
take Highway 55, which is paved
and gives them the ability to drive
faster than the gravel and curvy
Donnelly Drive.
Postmaster Ed Trager was also
in attendance. He said that nine

properties would be affected by
moving the road—three along
Donnelly and six on 58th Street
NW. Those nine properties would
be picked up by the Buffalo
postal routes due to safety concerns with the new route, and
would need to change their zip
codes accordingly.
Township Board Chairman
Gerry Giebenhain said he had
spoken to the bus garage and was
told that there wouldn’t be any issues with the new road. School
bus routes would remain the
same.
Some who did not approve of
vacating the road said they enjoy
the route along the lake and the
scenic view it provides. With the
new road being only about a
quarter-mile south, others said the
view would remain the same,
simply a little further back.
“If they pay for the new road,
then we still have our access into
town and we can still enjoy the
view of the lake,” one resident
said.
Due to high speeds often
driven along that stretch of Donnelly and the steep embankment
down to the lake, those living in
the area seemed to favor vacating
the roadway.
“I would never go along the
lake road because that’s the most
hazardous road there is,” said another resident. “This is a win-win
situation—to move the road and
get a better road.”

Giebenhain agreed.
“We see this as an opportunity
to improve the road for safety and
for traffic from (Highway) 55 and
(County Road) 37 along Donnelly,” he said. “If they’re willing
to pay for an upgrade…”
The original stretch of road
was built in 1879, when only a
handful of farmhouses were present. Development has since
brought numerous cabins, homes
and families to the area, and some
claim the road simply wasn’t
made for the current traffic levels.
“You say it wasn’t built for
this traffic, but apparently it was
because it’s still there,” said one
resident at Tuesday’s meeting. “I
think we should leave it alone.”
Others pointed out that the
new stretch of road wouldn’t be
as much of a straight shot as it
will include some 90-degree
curves, which may lower speeds
and reduce the cut-across traffic.
Residents living on the other
ends of Donnelly (not on the
stretch in question) wondered
how the change would benefit
them and the high speed of traffic
traveling past their homes. The
answer was that it might not benefit them at all, but it was unlikely
to make the situation any worse.
Those residents were encouraged
to bring their own issues before
the board at another time.
“Would this help?” one asked.
“I think it would. It think it’s a
start and at least Pribyl brought it

to the table.”
While the meeting was not a
vote of the people, the board
opted to ask the crowd for their
opinion before making their own
final decision. Roughly 30 people
raised their hands when asked
who wanted to leave Donnelly
Drive as it is. Another 45 wanted
to vacate the existing road, and
more than 60 raised their hands
when asked if they would prefer
to vacate the existing road and
build a new one.
In the end, Supervisor Ronald
Wolff voted to vacate the current
stretch of road and build the new
one at the Pribyl family’s expense. Giebenhain seconded it,
and Clerk Dick Hogan agreed in
a unanimous decision.
“We’re trying to make something work that benefits everyone,” Giebenhain said.
The gravel along the stretch to
be vacated will be moved to the
new road location with the Pribyl
family covering all costs. They
will also pay any additional fees
associated with the construction
of the new road and for a cul-de-

Wolf, and Chairman Gerry Giebenhain look over the map

sac to be placed where Donnelly
Drive will dead end. After it’s
completion, the township will be
in charge of maintaining the road.
A tentative agreement was
signed at the conclusion of the
meeting pending changes from
the Pribyl’s lawyers and engineers. The Township’s engineer
will also need to agree to and sign
off on all construction plans prior
to any work being done. The
project is expected to begin in the
spring and end in the summer of
2015.
“I thank everyone for their
comments,” said Timothy Pribyl,

a member of the group making
the original request. “I think what
we’re offering is going to make
everything safer for everyone,
and I respect everyone’s opinion.”
OTHER:
Following the discussion and
the signing of paperwork, the
board appointed Tom Neumann
as a new board member, taking
the place of Mike Elsenpeter,
who resigned from his position in
April. Neumann will fill his seat
on the board until the next election in March 2015.

Boys basketball claims tournament championship
By Brenda Erdahl
Sports Writer

The Maple Lake boys basketball team won their own pre-holiday tournament last week by
handily defeating both MayerLutheran and Foley.
The Irish started off the twoday event with an 82-65 win
over Mayer-Lutheran, on Thursday, Dec. 18. On Friday, Dec.
19, they went on to defeat Foley,
68-39 for the championship.
“It was fun to see the players
after the games smiling and
wearing their tournament champion t-shirts,” head coach Tim
Staloch said after Friday night’s
game.
The entire team contributed
Thursday against the Royals.
The Irish jumped to a quick lead
and only lengthened it as the
game went on. By the end of the
first half the home team was up
43-28.
The lead allowed some of the
bench to get some “well de-

served” extended minutes,
Staloch said.
In total, 12 different Irish
players scored.
David Stokman led with 23
points and eight rebounds. He
was also six for nine from the
three-point line.
Andrew Schonnesen put up
22 points for the night and had
four rebounds for the team.
It was “another solid, allaround team effort,” Staloch
said.
The Irish got off to another
good start when they took on
Foley, Friday, and they managed
to stay in control throughout the
entire game.
Twice the Falcons tied it up,
and once they took the lead, but
they couldn’t sustain it.
“The guys did an excellent
job rebounding,” Staloch said.
“We out-rebounded them 50 to
35 and had 16 second-chance
points to Foley's two.”
Brandon Borell and Chase

Olson were both in double digits
for rebounds with 11 for Borell
and 10 for Olson.
“Defensively we were very
solid. We drew a season-high
four charges which was fun to
see,” Staloch said.
Stokman led for scoring
again against Foley with 24
points; Schonnesen had 15 and
Olson contributed 14.
Up next for the Irish is Rockford at Rockford on Tuesday,
Jan. 6, at 7:30 p.m. They will be
on the road again on Thursday,
Jan. 8, when they take on Kimball at 7:30 p.m.

Irish girls basketball claims two wins
by Brenda Erdahl
Sports Writer

The Maple Lake girls basketball team claimed their first win
of the season, Tuesday, Dec. 16,
beating Holdingford 38-26, then
went on to take third place in the
Eden Valley-Watkins Pre-Holiday Tournament after a heartstopping, one-point victory over
Sauk Rapids-Rice.
The girls are now 1-1 in the
Central Minnesota Conference,
since Holdingford was a conference game, and 2-4 overall.
The Irish started out using
full-court pressure, Tuesday, to
expose the younger, less experienced Huskers, Irish Head Coach
Adam Ronnenberg said.
With some quick run-outs for
easy baskets, the Irish managed
to gain and hold a commanding
24-12 lead at the half.
Maple Lake slowed a little in
the second half offensively, but
their defense held out to claim
the long-awaited win.
Emily Webb scored a career
high 20 points for the night.
“It was nice to see us jump out
at the start of the game,” Ronnenberg said. “We are gaining confidence each day and will continue
to improve our shooting.”
On Thursday, Dec. 18, The
Irish traveled to Eden ValleyWatkins for a pre-holiday tournament where they fell 60-33 to the
home-town Eagles in their first
match-up.
Maple Lake struggled to find
a rhythm offensively thanks in
part to EV-W’s tough pressure
defense. The Irish found themselves down 38-12 at the end of
the half.
Despite
making
some
changes and playing a better second half, according to Ronnenberg, the Irish just couldn’t
recover.
“Eden Valley-Watkins is the
favorite in the conference this
season,” Ronnenberg said. “But
the Irish are focused, growing
each day and looking forward to
the next time they meet.”
Morgan Scheiber had a good
night for the Irish, leading scor-

ing with 11 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
“Eden Valley-Watkins is easily the top defensive team in our
conference,” Ronnenberg said.
“Combine that with strong post
play and the result isn’t real favorable.
“We certainly didn’t play our
best and will be better prepared
for their pressure in the future,”
he added.
Maple Lake connected on
only eight of 28 free-throw attempts, Thursday night. The 28
attempts was a season high for
the Irish.
EV-W also shot 47 percent
from the floor while the Irish
only shot 30 percent.
On Friday, Dec. 19, the Irish
took on Sauk Rapids-Rice for
third place in the tournament,
sneaking by for a one-point, 4847 victory over the Storm.
The Storm are a non-conference opponent who generally
play in a larger class than Maple
Lake, Ronnenberg said.
The Irish came out strong behind some solid defensive pressure and the “hot” shooting of
Kayla Hoistad.
Hoistad had 13 of her careerhigh 17 points in the first half,
leading Maple Lake to a 30-16
halftime lead.
Foul trouble and less defensive pressure in the second half
allowed the Storm to creep back
into the game.
With approximately two minutes left to play, the Irish led by
only two points.
Solid free-throw shooting
kept the Irish in the lead and
eventually sealed the win despite
a heart-stopping, three-point shot

at the buzzer that pulled Sauk
Rapids to within one point at the
end.
Hoistad led the Irish in scoring with a career high 17 points
and Linsey Rachel was selected
to the all-tournament team after
her 11 points and going six for
eight from the free-throw line.
Brooklyn Toedter scored nine
points for the Irish.
“We really got back to the basics in this one,” Ronnenberg
said. “We were reacting to what
the defense was doing and worrying less about the x’s and o’s.
The girls really earned the win.”
Maple Lake shot a seasonbest 41 percent from the field and
had a dramatic improvement
from the free-throw line, making
13 of 20 shots for 65 percent.
The Irish also had a season
low in turnovers with only 17.
The Irish will return to the
basketball court after the Holidays on Monday, Jan. 5, to take
on Spectrum in Elk River for an
“important” sub-section matchup, Ronnenberg said. The game
will begin at 7 p.m.
Then, on Friday, Jan. 9, they
will host Rockford at 7:30 p.m.

wins under their belts and a
third- place finish at the Frazee
Les Kertscher Duals over the
weekend.
The Lightning kicked off the

Thursday, Dec. 18, at GlencoeSilver Lake High School and
came away with a 45-25 win.
On Saturday, Dec. 20, they

their way to third place. Their
only loss was against Minneota,
the team that would go on to
win the tournament championship.
Individually, four Lightning
wrestlers went undefeated for
the day: Tanner Vassar, Spencer
Ogden, Holden Youngs and
Quinn Youngs made it through
the entire tournament without
being beaten once.
The Lightning will take a

Boys hockey wins one, loses one
by Brenda Erdahl
Sports Writer

The Monticello-AnnandaleMaple Lake boys hockey team
rebounded from a disappointing
loss to Rogers, Thursday, Dec.
18, at home by going on to defeat a tough Becker-Big Lake
team two days later, Saturday,
Dec. 20, also on the Moose’s
home ice.
Rogers slipped by the Moose
3-2 Thursday and on Saturday,
Becker lost 5-2 to the home
team.
“It was a great team effort,”
Coach Sheldon Weston said
after the games.
After a scoreless first period,
Thursday, the Moose broke open
the scoring 19 seconds into the
second period when Hunter Nogren found the back of the net

on an even-strength goal, assisted by Nick Zwack.
The Moose held off the Royals until 6:59 into the second
when Dustin Schoepke slipped a
puck past M-A-ML goalie
Nathan Isaacson with help from
Jake Hellickson and Vinny
Billing of Rogers.
Then at 16:30, Maple Lake’s
McRae Haney tied things up
with another even-strength goal,
assisted by Jaden Jarmuzek to
give the Moose a 2-1 lead going
into the second period.
M-A-ML led until 4:23 in the
third period when Rogers’ Trent
Frederickson found the back of
the net with help from Billing to
tie it up 2-2. Another goal by
Rogers’ Sam Libke, assisted by
Shane Smith, put them in the
lead and that’s where the score

stayed.
Isaacson took the loss for the
Moose. He had 44 saves that
night.
M-A-ML’s Casey Chiodo got
things started on Saturday with
a goal at 2:44 into the first period. He was assisted by Jarmuzek and Norgren. Trevor
Nodland scored again for the
home team at 14:30 assisted by
Haney.
Becker-Big Lake answered at
16:50 with a goal on a power
play by Nick Stalpes, assisted by
Taylor Giving to make the score
2-1 in favor of the Moose going
into the second period.
The Moose put three more
points on the score board in the
second period off goals by:
Chiodo, assisted by Nick Johnson and Jarmuzek; Jarmuzek;

and by Maple Lake’s Nate
Mass, assisted by Haney.
B-BL’s Brandon Christianson found the back of the net
one more time for the Eagles at
3:35 in the second period, but it
wasn’t enough to take over the
lead.
Isaacson got the win for the
Moose with 14 saves.
The M-A-ML team was
scheduled to play again on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at 7 p.m. at Red
Wing, their last game before the
Christmas holiday. They will return to the ice on Monday, Dec.
29, when they travel to the MAC
Arena to take on Providence
Academy at 11:30 a.m. Then on
Wednesday, Dec. 31, they will
take on St. Cloud Tech, at 12:15
p.m., also at the MAC Arena.
