Classic Aikido Jo - 4.21 Shaku
Made in Japan (Kyushu region) Available woods: Red Oad, White Oak & Isu no Ki Lenght: 4.21 Shaku (127.6 cm) | Diameter: 24 mm, 27 mm or 30 mm. Finish : urethan coated or oil polishing This classic Aikido Jo is available in Ichiikashi (red oak), Shirakashi (white oak) or Isu No Ki, either varnish or unvarnished (oil polishing). The length in a standard 4.21 shaku (127.6 cm), with 3 different diameters to chose from. The standard thickness is 24 mm (8 bu) and the 27, and 30 mm models are designed to work tanren (reinforcement), which is very important in some Aikido schools. The 27 mm model is very strong, which also makes it a great Jo practice with very violent contacts. While the red and white oak models will sustain violent contacts during practice , the Isu No Ki is slightly less resistant and will therefore not be suited for practice at full power. The Isu no Ki remains a relatively light wood and will suit practitioners seeking an original, purely Japanese wood. All the classic Jo are adapted to the practice of Aikido but also Jodo. Choice of wood species: red oak, white oak, Isu no ki. Diameter: 24~25 mm (8bu), 27 mm (9bu) or 30 mm (1 sun). Available finish: Urethane varnish or camellia oil polish. Manufacturing workshop: Horinouchi for varnished bokken and Nidome for oil polished models.
Non varnished - Oil polish option (+ 500 JPY):
Urethane varnish is the "classic" finish for wooden weapons. This varnish protects the wood from moisture or drought, but touch is less pleasant than that of unvarnished weapons. When wood is not varnished, it is necessary to treat regularly (every two months on average) with oil (camellia or walnut oil or linseed oil). Unvarnished weapons are meticulously polished with a fine grain sandpaper, which in addition to the oiling work done by our team before shipping, justifies the extra charge. Only quality weapons can withstand a Japanese oil finish instead of varnishing. This is the finish we recommend to the most demanding practitioners.
