Diversified Coco-based Farming System: Production and Income Improvement
strategy of Bitaogan Farmers
By RUDY M. CAMAY

I.

Introduction

State colleges and universities have been mandated by law to perform their fourfold
function in society. Teaching inside the four corners of formal setup ( instruction function), the
classroom, has to be equated into the non-formal instruction ( extension function) to teach
practical application of some theories. Apart from aforementioned functions , the SUCs also
mandated to perform Research and Production functions.
The DOSCST-SIC has been adopting barangay Bitaogan as one of the recipients of
extension activities of the college based on the fact that she has been partner of the college in
countryside development for a long time past. Besides this extension project is to strengthen
and continue the collaboration.
The DOSCST-SIC extension team had informal talk with the Barangay council of
Bitaogan on July 14, 2015. The team extracts informations that would be the basis in crafting
possible new extension project that would be conducted in the barangay. Upon conversation
and after noting some data from the Barangay Development Plan 2009-2013, the team has
conceptualized an extension project entitled “ Diversified Coco-based Farming System”. This
project aimed to attained the following objectives:
1. Develop a diversified coco-based farming System, integrating livestock and Banana
enterprise with coconut as the main crop.
2. Established demo farms showcasing sustainable technologies in Coco-based Farming
technologies
3. Conduct trainings/seminar/workshop to capacitate farmers in managing a diversified
farming system
4. Increase farm production and family income by adopting an integrated farming system
II.

Methodology
Proposed activities and Justification for funding

1. Technology needs assessment
The college extension team conducts TNA through series of meetings with
farmers and barangay council members. Established farm data were also studied
from the barangay development plan. These are springboard in conceptualizing
the extension project.
2. Determination of a Farmer cooperators

There will be at least two farmer cooperators. One cooperator to showcase the
Coco-banana farming system and another cooperator to showcase the Cocolivestock integration farming system. Determination of a farmer cooperator will be
done with the help of Barangay Agricultural Technician, barangay council and
farmers. Rubrics for criteria will be used.
3. Inking of Memorandum of Agreement
Two MOAs will be entered into between the groups involved in the extension
project. The will be a MOA between the barangay and DOSCST-SIC and another
MOA between farmer cooperator and DOSCST-SIC.
4. Conduct of Seminar for a Coco-based Integrated farming system
After the farmer cooperators had been identified, a training/seminar for a Cocobased integrated farming system will be conducted. This will be participated by
farmers of the identified partner barangay.
5. Farmer field tour
Farmers involved in the extension project will be toured to different agricultural
farms showing an established integrated farming system , specially on cocobased farming system.
6. Establishment of a demo farm
A demo farm for a coco-banana and coco-livestock integration will established at
a farmer cooperator of the identified barangay partner. Another possible
integration such as coco-tilapia integration for additional cooperator maybe
considered.
7. Monitoring and Evaluation
The project will be monitored every month to check the proper and correct
implementations of guidelines imbedded in the project. Time or schedules, inputs and
activities will be monitored and evaluated vis-à-vis what is being programmed and based
on project objectives. A project monitoring and evaluation form will be designed for a
project.
III.

Extension Strategies and methodologies for Implementation
