DESIGN DEVELOPMENT UPDATE The improvement project was presented to the Douglas County School District Board in November 2012. The project was approved at that meeting and the board requested some additional items be added to the project. These additions included: Revisions to the acoustics in the Main Gym Restrooms at the new CTE Building As the design progressed, the design team further refined the scope of work to include additional renovations at the 500 Building and Commons to meet the requirements of the Education Specification and intents of the renovation project. As a result of the inclusion of the Board requested changes and upgrades to the design, the project as presented to the Board required modification to remain within the project budget.

Design Development

In order to accomplish this, the following modifications were made to the overall scope of the project: The New CTE Building has been eliminated The Welding Shop remains in Building 500 Four classrooms were added to the STEM building A summary of the revisions and changes follows.

GYMNASIUM ACOUSTICAL REVISIONS At the direction of the Board, a preliminary analysis of the acoustics in the main gymnasium was completed during the Design Development phase. The analysis determined that the issues with the sound are a result of an undersized sound system and lack of acoustical treatment throughout the room. To remedy this situation the gymnasium will be provided with new acoustical treatment at the upper walls and ceiling to minimize the reverberation that affects sound intelligibility. Additionally, recommendations are being provided for audio/visual equipment that is appropriate for the gymnasium activities. REST ROOMS AT CTE BUILDING The initial presentation for the improvement project included a new CTE building that did not include rest rooms. The design of the CTE building was revised to include rest rooms that could be accessed internally and externally to serve the modular classrooms. However, the as the design progressed, it was determined that the CTE building would not be included in the project. Therefore this issue was eliminated. COMMONS AND ADMINISTRATION (PAGE 6) The revisions to the Commons presented at Schematic Design have been further developed to include improved lighting, better acoustics, and audio/visual capabilities. The renovation includes new lighting throughout the ceiling and perimeter to brighten up both the floor level and the space above as well as a new acoustical panel ceiling to improve light reflection and sound issues. A new audio/visual room has been created and the room will include new projection screen, speakers, and locations for A/V connections. The updated design incorporates a dedicated snack bar to meet the needs of after hours activities. This space is separate from the kitchen/servery area, but convenient to the Gym Entrance. The previous location did not allow for the space to be open without access to the Servery. The adjacent Administration area has been updated to provide adequate office and storage space. The central administrative space has been reconfigured to increase visibility and provide a link to the athletics secretary. Internal circulation has been revised to provide better access between offices and incorporate separate waiting areas for administrators. A small storage room for test storage has been created separate from general storage minimizing the access needs for the secure vault.

BUILDING 500 MODIFICATIONS (Page 10) A number of additional upgrades were incorporated into the renovation of Building 500 to completely refresh the building. The work includes full replacement of carpet, ceiling tile, and paint throughout the interior. The student toilet rooms will be renovated to meet ADA requirements and include new fixtures and partitions. The exterior work will include the addition of a new roof, replacement of the wood fascia and soffit with prefinished metal panels, and replacement of the concrete sidewalk on the north side of the building to correct the site drainage issues. It was determined during the Design Development that the Welding Shop would remain in Building 500. The shop will remain on the east end of the building, but the space will be completely remodeled to meet the requirements of the Education Specification. This renovation includes the Welding Shop, Classroom, Shop Storage, separate Tank Storage Room and Air Compressor Room, and screened exterior yard for material storage. Adjacent to the Welding Shop is a reconfigured Project Room and reconfigured Electrical Room with exterior access only. A number of minor modifications were also incorporated into the building plan to better address the various uses within. A Special Education Suite was created using the space formerly included in the entryway allowing the Teacher Workroom to remain in its existing location. The Silk Screen Shop and Auto Shop were both modified to allow for exterior access only - eliminating the ability for odor transmission into the hallway. That change combined with the mechanical system replacement will address the odor problem currently present in the building.

STEM BUILDING (Page 12) The STEM Building size was increased to compensate for the classrooms eliminated with the Welding Shop remodel within the 500 Building. An additional four standard classrooms have been incorporated on the west side of the building. The additional classrooms were accommodated by adding a single classroom on the first floor and stacking an additional three classrooms above at the second floor. By adding these classrooms, the STEM Building design utilizes the maximum amount of site available for a building. The site development around the STEM Building includes the modified entry sequence previously presented as well as development of a plaza space off the commons for student use. The plaza will be an open paved area with a perimeter seating wall and landscaping. Concrete walkways between buildings will define the perimeter of the plaza area. Additional site development has been provided north of the STEM building to provide an exterior classroom area adjacent to the STEM flex room.

PARKING RECONFIGURATION The existing parking lot will be re-striped to separate the student, visitor, and bus traffic. This includes the creation of student drop off areas on the south and east sides of the campus and elimination of vehicular traffic adjacent to the STEM Building. A raised crosswalk will be provided from Highway 88 across the parking area to increase student safety.
