Hi Jay: It must have took me five years to get to your site but I wished I would have came across you sooner if it was there at the time! I moved here from Florida and I was in totally shock mode trying to understand why I couldn't pass my first two exams after reading NC's DMV book (like a brain) to obtain a license. Some things in NC are like fictional story telling like "Goldie Locks and the Three Bears, but ultimately did pass on the third charm! Jay, you could be an enterpreuner out there saving all soon to be NC residents.
Posted by: Cha-Cha | December 2, 2006 09:29 AM

Jay, Like most people, I stressed over taking the test. The test took me just over 5 minutes and I aced it. Most of what was on my test can be found in the Brain Dumps. I found the test straight forward and, for the most part, merely common sense. Almost all questions were found on your site. Some additional Brain Dumps: What best characterizes a bike rider? He is likely to sustain severe injuries when struck by a car. A blind person ready to cross the road has the right of way: if he has a white cane with a red tip or a guide dog. I'm glad I found your site. Thanks a million. With best regards, Rich

Couple more questions 1. The flashing red signal has the same meaning a the stop sign ... Stop and do not proceed to move until you can enter the intersection without interfering with approaching traffic. 2. When entering the interstate,.... use the acceleration lane until your vehicle’s speed matches that of the other traffic and then merge safely.

A North Carolina driver's license is required if you... are sitting in the driver's seat of a vehicle with the motor running. If you are caught driving while under the influence... your license will be suspended.

Hello There! My Husband and I both just moved from New York to North Carolina. We have a 19 year old son, who doesn't know how to drive. This afternoon, all three of us took the North Carolina Drivers Exam, and we all did GREAT! There was nothing on my test that wasn't on this site. I got 100%, my son got 100% and my Husband got 95% (he is still disputing to himself whether you should move your car from the site of an accident or call the police first) He opted for calling the Police first and that was the one he got wrong. So, remember. . MOVE YOUR CAR FIRST. . is the answer. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Getting a permit is a BIG THING for my son. He has been waiting a while. . .but where and what was he going to drive in NEW YORK.. and who could pay those horrendous insurance rates! We are all on our way, and had a wonderful experience today. . thanks to YOU! Thank you. Love, Connie

what is the most commmon accident on the highway/interstate? ...rear end collision
Posted by: tina | February 20, 2007 10:16 PM

Hey Jay, Thanks a lot! Both my roomie n I got our learners today only by reading your points .. :) My two cents to the list .. 1. When you are entering a curved road what would you do ? Answer is slow down before entering the curve. There was another option which said - gradually reduce speed or something. 2.Registration of vehicles for NC state is checked for every .. 1.6 months 2.12 months 3.Two years. I skipped this question but I think the answer is 12 months .. do check it! Thanks once again!

I've got one that probably tops them all and is not mentioned. Here goesWhen you get into an accident what should you do? a. Move your vehicle off the road. b. Notify the state police. c. Notify your insurance. answer: b, even though you should do all of these, keep in mind they never specify how severe the accident is (i.e. can your car move or not?) nor do they ask "in which order you should do these things".

I took the test yesterday and got a perfect score mainly because of this website, took about five minutes of memorizing, bless you. One question that was on the test that I didn't see here was, Speedlimit inside of city unless otherwise posted is 35 MPH
Posted by: Peggy | April 18, 2007 11:08 AM

Took the test back in Jan and got 100% with your help! On my signs test. There was a blank round yellow sign. It's actually the railroad crossing sign but they took out the X. Sneaky sneaky.
Posted by: Sue | April 21, 2007 09:03 PM

I really wish I'd had this before I took the test the first time. I moved to NC and have been driving for 20 years, so I was pissed when I failed, especially since the ones I missed had nothing to do with driving! Here is one to add to the bad question list: What's the most likely time to have a bicycle accident? A: Saturday at dusk (and yes, it's that specific). Thanks for the list (as I still need to retake my test:-) Melissa
Posted by: Melissa | May 14, 2007 03:24 PM

The answer on what to do if in an accident, is notify the police. Tried pull the car off to the side of the road today, and it was scored wrong. When approaching a traffic light, if it changes to yellow, proceed through cautiously.
Posted by: Brian | May 17, 2007 07:30 PM

There was a question about littering on my test today. The answer was a minimum of $250 and maximum of $1,000 fine. Thanks to you, I got the test perfect.
Posted by: Kristin | September 20, 2007 04:13 PM

Hey, some other info that might be useful... In bad weather you should slow down and allow yourself extra following distance. Bikers sustain more injuries. Slow driving can be dangerous in a city. If you're skidding, don't apply the breaks but rotate the vehicle in the direction of your rear wheels.
Posted by: Kristy | December 28, 2007 02:22 PM

OMG i was so scared about taking the drivers permit test. When i went to to take it though it was so easy becasue of what you put up. I barely looked at the DMV hand book, and i passed. One question i remeber is; what blood level would you be considered intoxicated? 1) .1 2) .05 or 3) .08 I believe the answer was .05. It also asked the question about which traffic conviction adds the highest number of points- that would be the school bus. more questions were about speed limits, like what is the maximum speed limit on all highways (70 mph) and what is the basic speed in which farm equipment travel at (15-20mph) the rest was just really simple common sense stuff, and basically all the questions on the test were on you study guid. thank you SO SO SO SO MUCH!! :)
Posted by: Anonymous | December 31, 2007 12:13 PM

Thanks Jay, This was a great use, I got a perfect score surely thanks to you. you might probably want to add this one to the list. Q. Studies show that the most hazardous of all drivers and the cause for most number of accidents are. 1. Slow drivers 2. Middle Aged drivers 3. Women drivers. The answer is Slow drivers. Thanks again for this great work.
Posted by: Ram | January 7, 2008 02:37 PM

Yes, when I took the test the only question I got wrong was: If you are in an accident, Call the Police. Don't pull over first. This is the most common wrong answer.
Posted by: Tyler | January 8, 2008 12:48 AM

This guide was an absolute lifesaver. My wife found it, and we both read over the list a couple of times before taking the test. She got a 100%, I missed one. Just print out the question list and take it with you

to the DMV. You'll have a few hours to read over it while you are standing in line. The questions are goofy and you won't pass by relying on common sense. One question which I didn't see above: Q) How can you avoid a rear end collision on the interstate? A) Check your mirrors often. Don't ask me how that's supposed to prevent a rear end collision, but it's the answer they want.
Posted by: Matt | February 10, 2008 09:12 PM

This list is awesome!! I got my test cleared in first attempt by giving 100% correct answers. There are couple of questions that are not here. One of them is Q1) If you have leaking exhast pipe, it can cause Ans: Harmful fumes can enter into vehicle. Here is the explanation from book on this point. "One function of the exhaust system is to take harmful fumes from the engine to the rear of the vehicle to be released. Check your exhaust system often to be sure it is not leaking. Aleak in the exhaust system can allow poisonous carbon monoxide gas to enter the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Carbon monoxide poisoning often can be fatal, and even small amounts can cause you to become sleepy or unconscious and lose control of the vehicle. For this reason, it is suggested that you keep a window open about one inch while traveling.". Q2) Where the accidents occur most. Ans: At the intersections. You will have anothe option which is "Parking Lots". But choose "At the intersections" as correct answer. May be it is time to recompile all the meterial into short list again. Thanks a bunch!! Suresh

Oh this cheat sheet is very useful. Thanks to the author and whoever added information to this sheet. I also want to add couple of questions 1) where maximum numbers of accidents occur Ans is at intersection 2)what is the percentage of the accidents due to the drunken drivers.. ans is 38%

Thanks so much for your site. I'm not sure I would have passes without it and I did read the book! I got a question about littering that I don't think I saw on this site. The question was something to the effect of: What happens if you are convicted of littering? I think the answers were....1.$250 minimum fine and $1,000 maximum fine (correct) 2. doesn't go on permanent driving record 3. license suspended. Hope this helps someone.

Thanks Ken

I just took my test today (March 24, 2008) and it was very easy. This brain dump was extremely helpful, infact, this was all I used to study and I scored a 100% within 10 minutes. You will need to know your road signs because the examiner will ask you what they are before you take the computerized exam. They will show you a picture of a yellow School Zone sign put without the people in it. They will also show you a picture of a yellow dot without the "X", which is a Railroad crossing sign. The exam is 25 questions and you can get 5 wrong. I skipped the question everyone is talking about above regarding "What do you do first if you get into and accident" and I didn't have to go back and answer it because I already got 20 questions correct so the exam stopped and showed me that I passed. If you take 10 minutes to study the road signs in your drivers manual and know the answers to all of the brain dump questions/answers above then you will pass. If I passed the exam then anyone can pass. Thanks for this helpful study guide. Curtis

I took the test this morning and completed it in about 10 minutes. I studied this page for about 15 minutes last night and 15 minutes this morning while waiting for the test. There were 4 questions that I didn't see here, but all the others are on this page. I answered the others correctly so I got a 100%. I recently moved to NC and I was concerned about taking the test. I've been driving for over 15 years and would have been upset if I failed this poorly written state exam. One thing though, go to the DMV early. There is no time limit on the test and you may have to wait a long time. One gut next to me literally tested for about 1 hour! I finished in 10 minutes. Thanks for posting.

Hey, I got my learners permit just by reading ur site. Its amazing!!!!!!!!. Two questions went wrong, one is before passing, just look ahead and determine whether its safe to pass or not. I opted a different choice. i don't remember the other question as i encountered it in the beginning of the exam.

I took the test last week and this site was instrumental in me passing. I did get one question wrong that was not on this site. Which of the following does NOT result in a supension of your license? a) Prearranged racing with another motor vehicle on the highway b) Reckless Driving c) Refusing a breathalyzer. The answer is B) Reckless Driving. Thanks so much!!!!

Hi, everyone. I just had my test this morning and, thanks to this site, I made it. I thougt I would have the hole test in the computer, but the first thing you have to do is to read some numbers and tell the officer what some signs mean. But it is not a multiple choice question, so you have to know the signs. They will show you the stop sign without the word stop, same with yield, railroad crossing , school, no passing zone. There were also hill, divided highway ends, reserved parking for handcapped people. Then, I went to the computer for the multiple choice questions. There was a question about what to do when you see an emergency vehicle aproaching: drive to the right curb and stop completely. There was another one about crashes: they occur most frequently at intersections. And one asking what to do when you are in a curve and you can't see the oncoming traffic: should blow the horn. I hope this can help many others like me. Thanks again

Here is a dump for the motorcycle test. A minimum of two seconds distance should be maintained behind the vehicle ahead. Adjust the mirrors before riding the motorcycle. Most motorcycle accidents occur at intersections. Usually, a good way to handle tailgaters is to: Change lanes and let them pass. If you wait an hour for each drink before riding: Side effects from the drinking may still remain. The FRONT brake supplies how much of the potential stopping power? About three-quarters It is MOST important to flash your brake light when: You will be slowing suddenly. If a tire goes flat while riding, it is usually best to: brake on the good tire and steer to the side of the road. If a car is waiting to enter an intersection? Reduce speed and be ready to react. When riding, you should: Turn your head and shoulders to look through turns. To reduce your reaction time, you should: Cover the clutch and brakes. Making eye contact with other drivers: Doesn’t mean that the driver will yield. Reflective clothing should: Be worn day and night. The best way to stop quickly is to: Use both brakes at the same time. If your motorcycle starts to wobble: Grip the handlebars firmly and close the throttle gradually. Passengers should: Lean as you lean. Keep loads low. To tell if a road is bumpy: whatch cars tailights If you cannot see: use cars headlights After the first rider passes safely, the second rider should move up to the left position and watch for a safe chance to pass.

38% rider are killed using alcohol.

Hi Jay, Today I cleared my learner's test with the help of your cheatsheet. Thank A Lot. Here are my two questions that were not in the list: 1. You should inspect your vechinle every --- 12 months. There was other option for 6 months. 2. If you are going by car and a bicycle is in front of you and from the other side a car is coming and the road is very narrow, what should you do? the answer is you should slow your speed, let the other car pass and then safely pass the bicycle.

Here is one more Q not in the list. 1) Giving pass to emergency vehicle....Going right and stopping completely, till the emergency vehicle passby. Remember on right completely stop

What should you do if you are involed in a car crash? IS it pull over to the side or notify the police.

At a flashing yellow light don't stop completely only at flashing red do you stop
Posted by: jake | April 15, 2008 09:24 PM

The site is tremendous ... thank y9ou very much!!! I want to add some guidance I got and found it to be invaluable. When taking the test it is best to skip questions you are even slightly unsure of and answer ONLY the ones you are certain of. That way when you answer 20 correctly (80%) the test stops and you pass. If you do them sequentially, when you have 5 that are incorrect, the test stops and you fail. I got 20 correct out of the 1st 23 that I looked at so I only answered 20 questions. Again, thanks for the site !!! Talk about public service !!!

I have a Master's degree with extensive training in test construction and the NC DMV test fails all rules of test design. Jay is correct when he characterizes the test as "insipid" and "poorly written." It has shaken my confidence in NC. Still, we are subject to it if we are to have the privilege of driving in NC. Thanks to all who have shared here. Greatly appreciated.

Jay, Thankyouthankyouthankyou! I failed my test yesterday after studying the guide for days. Then found your site, printed out the study guide and went back today and got 100! You Rock! There was also a question about what causes the biggest hazard on the road..women drivers (WHAT?!) the elderly or slow drivers and the answer is slow drivers. Thanks again!

Just took the test today and got all the answers right, thanks to this site. One question I had was When do you adjust your rear and sideview mirrors? The answer is each time you get ready to drive somewhere. If NC drivers all adhered to every bizarre rule, we'd be a bunch of neurotic, anal folks.

This was the perfect study guide for the test--almost all the questions came exactly from this. You might want to add a little something about requirements to get your license--I sat for 10 minutes rifling through my purse for a government document that spelled out my middle name, despite the fact that everything had my middle initial on it.

I found this site using google in hopes of finding a good preparation for the test. Well i found this and i studied it for about 5-10 minutes for 2 days and before i took the test and I PASSED. About 90% of the questions here on on the test.Thank you so much. A couple that were not on here were: When you are entering a curved road, What should you do? Gradually reduce speed. Another one is about if a blind person is about to cross the road, they have the right of way only if they are carrying a white cane with a red tip or has a guide dog.

Bit of a trick question:

When approaching an intersection and the traffic light turns yellow you sould: proceed with caution stop immediately press the gas pedal The correct answer is Proceed with caution This may not be on the test however, I have since found out that if the light turns yellow before you cross the white line - you will get a ticket for crashing a red light!

Thank you so much for this information! My whole family moved here from IL and we all passed this test using your notes and the notes of the other posters. One tip I can give is if you don't know the answer use the "skip" function this will bring a new question up. The computer keeps the total questions answered correctly for you and stops automatically when you reach 20 correct. The questions you skip will go to the end of the test and hopefully won't come back up once you have done 20 correctly. Thanks again!

It is now mandatory that you show your unlaminated Social Security Card with middle name (not initial) and Proof of Car Insurance from your agent before you take the test. I went once and tried to show my Passport as ID per their web site instead of my Soc. Sec. Card and they would not honor it. Supposedly the rule changed this year but they haven't reprinted/updated their requirements for the public. Also, don't forget to take something like a lease, utility bill, or bank statement to show you are a resident. Thanks for your site; it helped me pass today!

I am new to North Carolina, I just relocated here from Pennsylvania in early May of 08, I needed to apply for a NC driver's license, and I stumbled on this site. The following is the results of this site. There are so many comments on the driver's exam that have many people confused. I studied the BrainDumps site, and I must say it is a great help to prepare yourself for the exam. I studied it over the weekend and Monday afternoon I went to the NCDMV office at 12:45PM and I was out with my new NC drivers license in less than 30 minutes. Sure there a few signs that are shown to you that do not have any markings at all on them, they were the stop sign, yield sign, the school sign, and the railroad crossing sign, we should know what they stand for anyway!!. But all the rest of the signs had markings and instructions letting you know what they stood for. And as for the questions just study the info that Jay made available on this site and you will do as I did... pass with 100%. But take your time and read the questions over two or three times before you choose the answer and if you are not sure of the answer skip that question and go to the next one. Of course driving for 53 years does help with over the road experience, And Self confidence and support from your spouse!! And help from Jay. Thanks Jay, KB in NC

I took the test today and failed. I'm going back tomorrow to try again, now that I've seen this cheat sheet. My favorite question ever: Q: Why should you pay close attention on country roads? 1. The scenery can be beautiful 2. Cows have the right of way 3. Slow moving farm machinery may use the roads (The answer is 3)

I put all of this into a mp3 file to listen to while driving to work or on the iPod, should make it even quicker and easier to pass that silly test. Feel free to put this up in the main area for people to download, contact me if I need to rehost it. http://www.filefactory.com/file/95800a/n/Drivertest_mp3 Enjoy -J

Here's one I don't remember seeing.. In a construction zone, you should "keep with the pace of traffic unless otherwise directed." Also (in Charlotte) if possible, you may want to avoid the Arrowood DMV.. we waited over 2 hours to get our number called and didn't walk out with our licenses until 3 hours after arriving! We heard there is a faster one in town.

Passed with 100% today using this site. Thanks everybody. Learn your signs from the DMV book. Then study the questions here and you'll be fine. The sign test will show you 12 Signs: Hill, School, Handicap Parking, RR Crossing, Yield, Stop, Divided Highway, No Passing and a few more you just have to read back to the examiner. My test had a question about driving safely in snow. The answer was "Drive at a slower speed."

Also, vehicles must be inspected EVERY 12 MONTHS in NC. I believe the options were 6 months, 12 months, 24 months. When school bus stops for passengers, all traffic from both directions must stop at: 1. Two-lane roadway with center turning lane. 2. Divided highway of four lanes or more with a median separation. 3. Roadway of four lanes or more with a center turning lane. The answer is 1.

Traffic from the opposite direction on a four lane highway with a median separation, or a turn lane do not have to stop.
