STRATEGIES
• Dropbox has spent very little on
advertising , yet it is worth $4 billion!
• They have implemented many growth
hacks
• Best overall startup for 2011
• Revenue reached about $400 million in
2014
• 1 billion files are saved to Dropbox every
24 hours

SOCIAL MEDIA
• We’ve all seen the stores with a “Like us on
Facebook” or the “Follow us on Twitter”
decals on front doors.
• It’s becoming all too common.
• Dropbox did something a little different.
• With each Follow on Twitter, Connect with
Facebook or Twitter, Dropbox gives the user
a 125MB increase

SHARING LINKS TO FILES
• Everyone used to download files using Megaupload,
Rapidshare, Hotfile, and many other file hosting sites.
• These services were often plump full of ads, “premium
accounts” with faster download speeds and many other
money making tactics that took away from the core
objective for the user.
• Dropbox solved that problem.
• If a user wants to share a file, they simply use the ‘Get
Link’ function found on either the desktop or web.
• No ads, no signup required first, no waiting for the
download link. Just a clean looking page with a focus on
one thing: the file.

DROPQUEST
• Dropquest is a contest run by Dropbox that
makes users go through different puzzles and
scavenger hunts.
• Those who complete and place in the top 176
get free space and/or free swag.
• The announcement on their blog generated
quite a lot of Likes and Tweets.
• Dropquest has gotten Dropbox lots of
publicity in the tech world for this just

12

Easy Signup Process
• The signup process is only a few steps and a user can
sign up on their desktop—no web browser needed.
• Once a user signs up (either via web or desktop
program) and installs Dropbox on their computer,
Dropbox puts a photos folder and a ‘Getting Started’
text file to help get them started.
• This shows that dropbox helps in keeping the things
simpler and making it more easier for the user.

Dropbox

13

REFER A FRIEND
• According to Houston, referrals increased Dropbox signups
by 60%.
• Dropbox makes it really easy for users to tell one another
about the product.
• For example, when one person who has Dropbox refers
another, they both get a 500MB increase, pending signup.
• Dropbox makes it easy to refer:Via email, link
• The sender has an incentive to spread the word about
Dropbox—getting extra space. The referee also has an
incentive for signing up.

Availability on Multiple Devices &
Platforms

Dropbox is available on multiple platforms making it more
accessible to the people. Being available everywhere is key
for Dropbox, according to Co-Founder & CEO Drew Houston.

• There are an estimated 20 million Linux users world wide.
These millions of Linux users did not have a free cloud
storage solution at the time. By adding Linux support,
Dropbox is made it easy for anyone who wants a Dropbox
account to have one.
• Beyond Linux, Dropbox has maintained Blackberry support
despite their shrinking market share.
• It’s also supported on even the least popular devices such
as the Symbian.
• Support on multiple platforms is not just important for the
Dropbox product; it can also be considered an opportunity
for growth.

Dropbox
• One Symbian user can spread the Dropbox product to one

BUSINESS MODEL
• Dropbox allows users to create a special folder
on their computers, which Dropbox then
synchronizes so that it appears to be the same
folder (with the same contents) regardless of
which device is used to view it.
• Files placed in this folder are also accessible
via the Dropbox website and mobile apps.

Dropbox

16

BUSINESS MODEL
• Dropbox uses a freemium business model,
where users are offered a free account with a
set storage size and paid subscriptions for
accounts with more capacity. All basic users
are offered an initial 2 GB of free online
storage space.
• To prevent free users from creating multiple
linked free accounts, Dropbox includes the
content of shared folders when totaling the
amount of space used on the account For free
accounts, the total amount of traffic that all
links together can generate without getting
banned is 20 GB per day. For Pro and Business
accounts, the limit is 200 GB per day.

How DROPBOX enhances
and maintains
competitiveness

Dropbox Faces Growing
Competition In Cloud Storage
Wars
•  User numbers leapt from 5m in 2010 to 25m in
2011, reaching 100m last year and 175m today.
• Two years ago, the company had little serious
competition: Apple’s MobileMe service was a flop
and Google had seemingly aborted its own longrumoured attempt to create a “GDrive”.

Dropbox

19

• Now, however, Dropbox faces serious
competition on many fronts as more
consumers have adopted cloud services to
store their music and photos.
• A US survey by Forrester Research late last
year found that 14 per cent of online adults
had used back-up or storage services, with
Dropbox the most popular, claiming more than
a quarter of the MARKET, followed closely by
Apple’s iCloud.

Dropbox

20

• “We are forecasting to grow over 100 per cent
this year,” says Alastair Mitchell, Huddle’s
chief executive. “It’s a fast-growing space.”
• Dropbox has built and bought other services
that make it more than just a repository of
files. It paid a reported $100m in March for
Mailbox, an email app that had launched just a
month earlier to rave reviews from the digerati
– online communities – and offers a simple
media player and photo viewer for mobile
devices.

Dropbox Leading Charge For
A Privacy Revolution
• Privacy practices have been an extremely hot topic these
days. Facebook and google have found themselves in hot
water because of it.
• Popular online storage company, dropbox, is also no
stranger.
• Following some changes to their privacy policy and
revisions to their terms of service, some users were
outraged by unclear wording that lead some to believe
that dropbox claimed a user’s data as their own.
• Turns out their terms of service was poorly worded and
dropbox took to further revisions.

WHAT WE LEARNED
• Lots of pressure (or guilt) to do things the traditional
way. But think first principles
• Fortunately, we spent almost all our effort on making
an elegant, simple product that “just works” and
making users happy
• And we worked our asses off
• And hired the smartest people we knew
• “Keep the main thing the main thing”

Dropbox

26

WHAT WE LEARNED
• Mostly ignored (or woefully mishandled):

hiring non-engineers
mainstream PR
traditional messaging/positioning
deadlines, process, “best practices”
having a “real” website
partnerships/bizdev
having lots of features

• Product-market fit cures many sins of management
