pected to bring multitudes of joy and be nothing but fun can sometimes turn out quite the
opposite. It could bring frustration and stress.
Here are some tips to make the experience all you’ve
ever dreamed it should be:
• Before shopping, spend time looking through bridal
magazines. Mark styles that catch your eye. Take these
with when you go shopping.
• Plan a day to do nothing but shop for that one special
dress. Make it fun. Include a special family member or
friend and enjoy each other’s company. Be sure to have
a plan – list what shops you’d like to visit, etc. But don’t
schedule yourself too tightly – you don’t want the stress
that comes from falling off schedule.
• Take your time to look at different styles. One idea is
while you try on one style, let your friends or family members try on other styles so you can see what they look like
without you having to dress and undress so many times.
Once you’ve got
it narrowed
down,
can try your

favorites on yourself.
• Be open-minded. You may think you know exactly
what you want, but you may be surprised that once you
try on a dress in that style it isn’t what you envisioned. Be
open to looking at styles you may not have considered
before. Also, be open-minded to those helping you. Don’t
be offended if someone tells you a style isn’t right for
you. They want you to look glamorous on your day, and
you should expect them to be honest and accept their

gracefully.

• Let the professionals help. There are people with expertise in this area. Listen to their advice and feedback.
They have insight into current trends, what style may
work well with your body build, etc. Tell them right away
about your likes and dislikes to help them tune in to your
personal style.

Older Driver Safety Awareness Week
is Dec. 7-11 and aims to promote the
importance of mobility and transportation to ensure that older adults remain
active in the community.
With increasing age come changes in
physical, mental and sensory abilities
that can challenge the ability to drive
safely. The real need is a broad awareness of the solutions, rather than the
narrow focus of the problem.
Aging is inevitable. Although changes
are a normal part of aging, they occur
individually and at different rates and
times. It is important to plan for transportation needs. Early planning is
helpful in continued independence and
safety.
One of the first steps in addressing
older driver safety is having a nonthreatening conversation with loved
ones. Family and friends play a major
role in discussions about older driver
safety, and it is good to start the conversations early. This will give time to plan
and find the options that are available.
Occupational therapy practitioners
are trained in driving rehabilitation and
can suggest solutions. Sometimes that
is as simple as adaptive equipment.
When an older driver discovers the
need to make adjustments to drive
safely or can no longer do so, family
and friends can help them take these
changes in stride. The driver and their
family need to know about resources for
alternative methods of transportation
before driving cessation occurs.
December Show and
Tell at the Alexandria Senior Center will be filled
with Christmas items.
Collections are displayed
from noon Mondays to
Friday after noons. Everyone is invited to view the
Show and Tell.
Anyone who would
like to share something
Christmas-related should
call (320) 762-2087.
The center recently

Another helpful tool is CarFit, an
educational program that offers older
adults the opportunity to check how
well their personal vehicles “fit.”
The program provides information
and materials on community-specific
resources that could enhance their
safety as drivers, and/or increase their
mobility in the community.
Older drivers are often the safest
drivers in that they are more likely to
wear seatbelts and less likely to speed
or drink and drive. However, older drivers are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash does occur
due to the fragility of their bodies.
Driver safety programs improve
driver safety by addressing cognitive
abilities and skills. However, older drivers can also improve safety by ensuring
their cars are properly adjusted for
them.
At a CarFit event, a team of trained
technicians works with each participant
to ensure they “fit” their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety.
A CarFit check takes approximately 20
minutes. CarFit events are scheduled
locally in the spring and fall. Call me at
(320) 762-3047 for more information.

The center decided
to follow School District

school is closed, the
center will also close.
The various card
groups met and reported they are searching for instructors for
new game offerings

whist, pinochle, 500,
and hand and foot. A

The vote was unanimous to join the Lakes

Otto Bremer Foundation grant approved
The Alexandria Senior Center received word on Nov. 12 that the Otto
Bremer Foundation trustees approved
a grant to the center totaling $51,272.
Funds will go toward installation
of accessible doors at two entrances
($21,272) and new programs ($30,000).
This grant is the most significant financial support the senior center has
received to date.
The grant gives the center the means
to make needed improvements and provides funding for meeting needs within
the senior community.

Newspapers in Education
Tara Bitzan, Life Editor at the Echo Press
will be working hands-on with sixth graders
at Garfield Elementary School exploring
Sara Gronholz
views and keeps up on industry trends.
She’s frequently found researching new
ideas, techniques, philosophies, leadership styles and methodologies. When
working on projects, you can always
count on her to have researched
pros/cons, cost, advantages/disadvantages and she brings recommendations
before the project even starts!
“She is a very good listener and is eloquent in her communication skills,”
Neale added. “A mantra of Sara’s is to
live with intention. She strongly believes in living life to its fullest with her
family and friends as well as to dedicate
time for herself.”
Neale added that Gronholz’s big heart
is what makes her most endearing to all
who know her. She describes her as a
good listener who has strong values and
faith.
“Those who know Sara know that her
heart is filled with joy, hope and celebration,” Neale noted. “She recognizes
the needs of those less fortunate. She
has a huge heart. She is the first to celebrate accomplishments by giving
recognition to others, bringing in baked
goods to share with co-workers, or acknowledging hard work from committee
members.
“When you are around Sara you can’t
help but feel and see what’s good in the
world.”

National Business Women’s
Week (NBWW) has been celebrated
annually since 1928.
During the third week of October,
the accomplishments of working
women are celebrated and acknowledged.
The objectives of NBWW are as
follows:
• To promote full participation
and equity for women in the workplace.
• To publicize the achievements
of business and professional
women on the local, state and national level.
Over the years, NBWW has become an event widely recognized
by public and private institutions
and local communities.
NBWW has grown into a nationwide salute to all working women,
as well as an opportunity to spotlight issues of importance to working women.
The Lakes Area Professional
