A textbook case for digital learning The Sydney Morning Herald August 16 2011 HEAVY, expensive, often quickly out of date. Textbooks can break a university student's budget, with the cost for some courses running into hundreds of dollars a semester. But e-textbooks, accessible through tablet devices such as the Kindle and iPad, could change that. In July, online retail giant Amazon announced textbooks would be available for rent to students in the US, saving them up to 80 per cent on the cost of a hard copy. The scheme would allow users to make notes and mark pages in their e-textbooks, making them truly the student's own, but it is not clear that students will jump on board.... University of Auckland fears high cost as anti-piracy laws loom New Zealand Herald August 09 2011 New Zealand's biggest university is worried it could be stung by anti-piracy rules coming into force next month and says policymakers are not addressing its concerns. The Government's "three strikes" copyright regime comes into effect on September 1 and requires internet companies to issue warning notices to customers suspected of illegally downloading material, if rights holders - such as movie studios or record companies - request it. After a customer has been issued a third notice, rights holders can bring the case before the Copyright Tribunal, which can fine an offender up to $15,000. But under the law, universities rather.... University of Sydney adopts desktop virtualisation The Australian August 09 2011 WHEN the University of Sydney decided to deploy desktop virtualisation technology to improve computer services for students, it wanted a system that it could scale to meet its long-term needs. It has 16 faculties, each with its own sub-set of schools and disciplines, which adds up to about 500 bits of curriculum-required software.
