Each person has a story to tell. Although not everyone’s story ends up
in a history book, each person’s story fits into the history of that time. Each
person is affected with what happens and in turn leaves his or her mark upon
the world.
Rosita Pareja an 89 year old retired teacher was one of the
interviewees that we have, upon asking her what it’s like to become an elder,
she mentioned that its tough, not being able to do what you want to do
because of decreased mobility and loss of dexterity and impaired vision. She
told us that things are different when your older because it’s the time
wherein your body and mind start to fail, that even the simplest tasks like
getting dressed or reading a text message or pushing a grocery cart are a
challenge. Tasks that younger people never give a second thought to, for
elders represent barriers, obstacles and limitations.
She encouraged us to go on adventures and experience various
activities while our body is capable because as we grow older, the body
deteriorates. Lola Sita as she liked to be called, told us to savor our youth
and don’t grow up to quickly and to enjoy life.
