Hello, This morning, the Orange County Register included an article that referenced the Hero’s Regatta from last May. The article points specifically to the discussion concerning the material used for the trophy. As you may recall, last May when this issue first came to light, I sent a letter to the entire organization trying to explain the miscommunication. I also mentioned that I took accountability for the issue and was deeply regretful that it had happened at all. Just so you hear it directly from me, I never made any statements that that I worked alongside September 11 rescuers at the tragedy site. I stated that Long Beach firefighters (including myself) went to Ground Zero about a month after the event, but also mentioned that Long Beach Firefighters were among those on the site within days of the of  the event. I never made a claim that the metal used in the Regatta trophy originated at Ground Zero. I stated that the Trophy metal was meant to symbolize September 11 and those that were lost. I stated that our Department did bring metal back from the World Trade Center and it is on display in our lobby. On the heels of the of  the article that was published today, I want to re‐state my deep regret that this issue continues to linger. I have a profound respect for the men and women who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. I also have a deep respect for the men and women of our of  our organization who were personally impacted by that tragedy. I want to apologize to you, again, for this even being a topic of conversation. of  conversation. The Regatta was meant to be a fun event that showed respect to the men and women of our of  our local police and fire departments and provide them and their families 1

opportunity to engage with each other in a social setting. I never intended to show any sort of disrespect of  disrespect to our people, or those that were lost on September 11. I understand that this miscommunication has led to hurt feelings and has taken away from all the work and time invested by the volunteers that made the regatta a success. For that I am deeply apologetic. As I mentioned in my letter to you last May, I hold the men and women of the of  the Fire Service in the highest regard. I understand, fully, your daily sacrifices and the sacrifices of those of  those that lost their lives in service to their country and community. There is nothing I can say that will unwind the miscommunication that caused this to become an issue, other than to say I am sorry that it happened and I will do everything I can to ensure something like this does not ever happen again.
