I am doing Plus Two in the Science stream
with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. I
would like to do higher studies in Engineering
Physics. Let me know about the institutions
offering courses in this discipline and the job
opportunities.

The comprehensive study of the applications of
Physics in the engineering and technology field forms a specialised discipline named Engineering
Physics.
Those who have a strong interest in Physics and an aptitude for science and engineering can opt for
Engineering Physics for higher studies. Though rare, four-year B.Tech. and five-year dual degree
B.Tech.-M.Tech. programmes are available in Engineering Physics.
Study facilities
The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Valiamala, Thiruvananthapuram, has
launched a five-year dual degree programme that leads to B.Tech. degree in Engineering Physics and
any one of the following postgraduate degree specialisations — M.S. in Solid State Physics; M.S. in
Astronomy & Astrophysics; M.S. in Earth System Science; or M.Tech. in Optical Engineering. There is
no exit option at the end of four-year B.Tech.
Those who desire to join the programme should score high in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)
Main conducted by the CBSE and should also qualify the JEE Advanced conducted by IITs. (The
minimum prescribed category-wise marks are — general candidates require at least 20 per cent marks
in aggregate and 5 per cent marks in each of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; Other Backward
Community (OBC) Non-Creamy layer, at least 18 per cent & 4.5 percent respectively; and Scheduled
Castes & Scheduled Tribes and Persons with Disabilities (PD) need at least 10 per cent and 2.5 per
cent marks respectively.)
Candidates should have passed Plus Two/equivalent examinations with Physics, Chemistry and
Mathematics and secured an aggregate of at least 70 per cent marks in these subjects. SC/ST students
need 60 per cent marks. The IIST provides financial assistance to the students to meet the expenses of
education. A book allowance of Rs.3,000 is also provided during each semester. Those successfully
completing the programme in five years with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 7.5 out of
10 are eligible to be absorbed as scientist/engineer - SC grade in any ISRO/Department of Space
centres in a pay scale of Rs.15,600-Rs.39,100 with grade of Rs.5400 Plus DA and HRA as applicable.

IITs
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) offer regular four-year B.Tech., five-year Integrated M.Tech.,
five-year dual degree M.Tech. programmes in Engineering Physics. Selection is through the JEE Main
and IIT- JEE Advanced. Meritorious students who have passed Plus Two/equivalent examination in
regular stream with at least 60 per cent marks in aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are
eligible to apply for JEE Main. Those qualify JEE Main within 1.5 lakh toppers have to appear for IITJEE Advanced. Those appearing for the final-year qualifying examination will also be considered. IITJEE Advanced score alone will be considered for admission.
IITs in Madras, Bombay and Delhi conduct B.Tech. programmes in Engineering Physics. IIT Varanasi
offers a five-year Integrated M.Tech. course in this discipline. IIT, Bombay, conducts a five-year dual
degree M.Tech. programme in Engineering Physics with specialisation in Nanoscience. Department of

Physics of IIT Bombay offers both B.Tech. and dual degree M.Tech. in the discipline.
These programmes cover various topics, including basic physics, classical quantum and statistical
mechanics, and electromagnetic and quantum electronics. Students are also exposed to computer
programming, computation method, and simulation techniques in Physics. Engineering Physics
students are also offered electives in several applied areas such as VLSI technology, electronics
instrumentation and fibre optic communication.
IIT Varanasi’s Integrated M.Tech. programme trains students in the area of space physics, plasma
physics and fibre optics. Courses in solid state physics, quantum mechanics, thermodynamic, statistical
mechanics, material physics, applied nuclear science and remote sensing are also included.
Job opportunities
B.Tech. and M.Tech. scholars in Engineering Physics shall utilise employment opportunities with
government organisations such as ISRO, VSSC, and National Physical Laboratory apart from
opportunities in teaching profession. Campus placement facilities are also available in IITs.
