Definition of GARBAGE
is to be thrown overboard.
Garbage means all kinds of victual, domestic and operational waste excluding fresh fish and parts thereof, generated during the normal operation of the ship and liable to be disposed of continuously or periodically except those substances which are defined or listed in other Annexes to the present Convention.

Handling Ship-Generated Garbage
Collection and Storage
Separation of garbage by type: plastics, food wastes, all other garbage. Receptacles for each garbage type are clearly marked and color-coded, and placed strategically around the ship. All garbage is stored aboard ship until returning to port -for offloading. Garbage may be processed in a number of ways aboard ship for storage. Processes include grinding, compaction, shredding, crushing, and incineration .

Fire Safety Supplement Awareness & Knowledge Will Save Lives
Fire safety begins BEFORE there is an emergency. Make sure you know this Important information so that you know what to do when an emergency happens. • Know where the closest fire station and fire extinguisher are located wherever you are on the ship: to your cabin and to your duty station or throughout the passenger area in which you work. • Be aware of the closest exit at all times. Knowing your position in the room can help you to exit quickly if the room is filled with smoke. • The air closest to the floor contains the least smoke in a smoke filled room. Therefore, crawl below the smoke level when exiting or using fire hoses and extinguishers.
Use a damp cloth if necessary to cover your face to help filter the smoke. Use furnishings and walls to help guide you to the closest exit.
Fire Fighting's Golden Rules

OPENING THE VICTIM'S AIRWAY
Gently tilt back the victim's head and tilt the chin. CAUTION: If you suspect a head, neck, or back injury, just lift the chin.
LOOKING, LISTENING, FEELING
FOR BREATHING Look for the victim's che.st to rise. Put your ear to the victim's mouth, and listen and feel for exhaled air; chest movement alone may not mean breathing.
CHECKING FOR A PULSE
Gently press two fingers, not your thumb, in the depression on the side of the victim's neck, next to the Adam's apple, and feel for a pulse.

CHOKING The steps below should only be attempted after calling the ship's emergency number and alerting the Bridge of the emergency.

Do not try to retrieve an object lodged in the victim's throat. This might force the object further down the airway.
Give abdominal thrust (the Heimlich maneuver). Continue giving abdominal thrusts until the object is dislodged or until the victim looses consciousness. CAUTION: If the victim is pregnant or obese, place your fist on the middle of the victim's breastbone; do not place your hands on the ribs or on the lower edge of the breastbone.
Abdominal thrusts.
Place your arms around the victim's waist. Make a fist with one hand and place it in the middle of the victim's abdomen, just above the navel and below the ribs. Hold your fist with your other hand. Give quick, repeated thrusts, pushing inward and upward.

BURNS
The steps below should only be attempted after calling the ship's emergency number and alerting the Bridge of the emergency.
1.Remove the victim from the cause of the burns. 2.Remove any clothing or jewelry from the burned area.
CAUTION: Do not remove any hot or smoldering clothing that is dry or is stuck to the burned skin. Do not breathe or cough on the burned skin.
3.Cover small burns with wet cloths.
If the burned area is smaller than the size of the victim's chest, loosely cover it with a towel that has been soaked with COLD' water, or hold the skin under COLD running water. CAUTION: Do not place ice on the burned area. Do not break ant blisters. If the burned area is larger than the victim's chest, do not apply water or cover the burn.
4.Loosely cover the burned skin· with a clean, dry cloth.
If fluid oozes through the cloth, place another cloth over it. CAUTION: Do not spread any ointments, lotions, butter, baking soda, or ice on the burn.

BLEEDING
The steps below should only be attempted after calling the ship's emergency number and alerting the Bridge of the emergency.
1. Check the victims ABCs. 2. Remove any visible objects from the wound.
CAUTION: Do not remove any object or pull on anything that is stuck in the wound. Do not probe the wound or disturb it any way.
3. Apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or
your hand.
If blood seeps through the cloth do not remove it; put another cloth on top and keep pressing. You may need to apply firmer pressure if blood continues to seep through. For an embedded object, put pressure on the wound and not the object.
4.When bleeding stops, apply a bandage.
Do not remove any cloths placed on the wound to help stop the bleeding. Wrap a bandage or a clean cloth around the wound and tie it in place.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
The steps below should only be attempted after calling the ship's emergency number and alerting the Bridge of the emergency.

1.Lie the victim flat on his back. 2.Sweep the victim's mouth.
CAUTION: If you see an object lodged in the victim's throat, do not try to retrieve it, as this might force the object farther down the airway; give first aid for choking.
Finger sweep, adult.
Hold the victim's tongue and lift the chin. Slide your index finger down the inside of the cheek and sweep out any loose objects.
3.Open the victim's airway. ("A" procedure of ABCs)
Gently tilt back the victim's head and lift the chin.

Be sure to put your ear to the victim's mouth; chest movement alone might not mean breathing.
5.If victim is not breathing, give breaths.
Watch for the chest to rise with each breath; let the chest fall before you give the second breath. If the victim's chest does· not rise, gently tilt his head farther back and try again to give two slow breaths. If chest still does not rise, give first aid for choking. CAUTION: If the head is tilted too far or not far enough, you may not successfully open the airway;

Pinch the nose shut and seal your lips tightly around the mouth. Give two slow breaths; remove mouth between breaths.
6.Check for a pulse. ("C" procedure of ABCs)

Place your middle finger in the notch where the ribs meet the breastbone. Put your index finger next to and above your middle" finger. Place the heel of your hand next to and above your index finger. Remove your fingers and place that hand over your other hand; interlace your fingers and keep the up; off the chest.
Giving chest compressions, adult.
Position yourself so that your shoulders are directly over your hands; keep your arms straight. Press down forcefully the depress the victim's breastbone 1.5 to 2 inches. Release the pressure, but don't lift your hands off the chest. Give 15 chest compressions, at the count of "one and two and three ... " CAUTION: Do not rock back and forth.

LIFE JACKETS
Ships are equipped with adult and children's life jackets as per SOLAS requirements. They are placed in readily accessible areas and their positions are clearly. indicated. Life jackets are outfitted with a whistle, light, and retro-reflective tape.
Correct Donning of Life Jackets
Life jackets are to be worn with the following facing outward from the front of the body: • whistle which is secured by a cord • sea water-activated light which is attached to the front shoulder area All ties are to be tight so that the life jacket fits close to the body.
LIFEBOATS
Typical Launching Procedures - necessary to swing lifeboat over the side and lower to embarkation deck 1. Remove harbor pin, secure plugs, lead sea painter forward and make fast outboard and clear of all obstructions. 2. Release grip lines. 3. Lift winch brake handle at which time the davits and boat will move to the outboard position. When davits reach stoppers the life boat will automatically swing outward. In the event that the vessel is equipped with tricing and frapping lines for lifeboat embarkation: the lifeboat is lowered to the embarkation deck and the tricing lines are used to swing the lifeboat against the ships' side and hold it in position. Frapping lines are passed around the falls and secured to a fixed, solid object on deck. Once the frapping lines are tended, normally by two turns, and the lifeboat is steady, passengers can embark safely. When all are aboard, the tricing lines are released to allow the boat to swing outward and downward.
Life saving supplement
The purpose of tricing lines is to guide the boat to the side of the ship and hold it there until frapping lines can be used to secure the life boat to a solid object on deck steadying the boat for embarkation. In the event that the vessel is not equipped with frapping lines for lifeboat embarkation: the tricing lines are used to swing the, lifeboat against the side of the vessel after being lowered to the embarkation deck. Once the Bowsing tackles are secured forward and aft, then the forward and aft tricing lines are released. Passengers and crew passengers can embark at this point. When all are aboard, the Bowsing tackles are slacked to allow the boa to swing outward and downward. 4. Open the embarkation door of the lifeboat. Persons will embark with the assistance of the crew and will sit down. 5. When all persons are seated, tricing lines will be slackened and the life boat will swing outward. 6. With the life boat in outboard position it will be lowered into the water by using the winch brake remote control inside the lifeboat or from the deck using the winch brake handle. Typical Lowering Operation
1. Carry raft container .under life raft crane. Pull flap off container insert shackle and close hook. Make fast container line and pull out steering lines and fasten on board. 2. Fire Safety Supplement Awareness & Knowledge Will Save Lives
Fire safety begins BEFORE there is an emergency. Make sure you know this Important information so that you know what to do when an emergency happens. • Know where the closest fire station and fire extinguisher are located wherever you are on the ship: to your cabin and to your duty station or throughout the passenger area in which you work. • Be aware of the closest exit at all times. Knowing your position in the room can help you to exit quickly if the room is filled with smoke. • The air closest to the floor contains the least smoke in a smoke filled room. Therefore, crawl below the smoke level when exiting or using fire hoses and extinguishers.
Use a damp cloth if necessary to cover your face to help filter the smoke. Use furnishings and walls to help guide you to the closest exit.

Do not try to retrieve an object lodged in the victim's throat. This might force the object further down the airway.
Give abdominal thrust (the Heimlich maneuver). Continue giving abdominal thrusts until the object is dislodged or until the victim looses consciousness. CAUTION: If the victim is pregnant or obese, place your fist on the middle of the victim's breastbone; do not place your hands on the ribs or on the lower edge of the breastbone.

Place your arms around the victim's waist. Make a fist with one hand and place it in the middle of the victim's abdomen, just above the navel and below the ribs. Hold your fist with your other hand. Give quick, repeated thrusts, pushing inward and upward.

BURNS
The steps below should only be attempted after calling the ship's emergency number and alerting the Bridge of the emergency.
1.Remove the victim from the cause of the burns. 2.Remove any clothing or jewelry from the burned area.
CAUTION: Do not remove any hot or smoldering clothing that is dry or is stuck to the burned skin. Do not breathe or cough on the burned skin.
3.Cover small burns with wet cloths.
If the burned area is smaller than the size of the victim's chest, loosely cover it with a towel that has been soaked with COLD' water, or hold the skin under COLD running water. CAUTION: Do not place ice on the burned area. Do not break ant blisters. If the burned area is larger than the victim's chest, do not apply water or cover the burn.
4.Loosely cover the burned skin· with a clean, dry cloth.
If fluid oozes through the cloth, place another cloth over it. CAUTION: Do not spread any ointments, lotions, butter, baking soda, or ice on the burn.

BLEEDING
The steps below should only be attempted after calling the ship's emergency number and alerting the Bridge of the emergency.
1. Check the victims ABCs. 2. Remove any visible objects from the wound.
CAUTION: Do not remove any object or pull on anything that is stuck in the wound. Do not probe the wound or disturb it any way.
3. Apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or
your hand.
If blood seeps through the cloth do not remove it; put another cloth on top and keep pressing. You may need to apply firmer pressure if blood continues to seep through. For an embedded object, put pressure on the wound and not the object.
4.When bleeding stops, apply a bandage.
Do not remove any cloths placed on the wound to help stop the bleeding. Wrap a bandage or a clean cloth around the wound and tie it in place.

LIFE JACKETS
Ships are equipped with adult and children's life jackets as per SOLAS requirements. They are placed in readily accessible areas and their positions are clearly. indicated. Life jackets are outfitted with a whistle, light, and retro-reflective tape.
Correct Donning of Life Jackets
Life jackets are to be worn with the following facing outward from the front of the body: • whistle which is secured by a cord • sea water-activated light which is attached to the front shoulder area All ties are to be tight so that the life jacket fits close to the body.
LIFEBOATS
Typical Launching Procedures - necessary to swing lifeboat over the side and lower to embarkation deck 1. Remove harbor pin, secure plugs, lead sea painter forward and make fast outboard and clear of all obstructions. 2. Release grip lines. 3. Lift winch brake handle at which time the davits and boat will move to the outboard position. When davits reach stoppers the life boat will automatically swing outward. In the event that the vessel is equipped with tricing and frapping lines for lifeboat embarkation: the lifeboat is lowered to the embarkation deck and the tricing lines are used to swing the lifeboat against the ships' side and hold it in position. Frapping lines are passed around the falls and secured to a fixed, solid object on deck. Once the frapping lines are tended, normally by two turns, and the lifeboat is steady, passengers can embark safely. When all are aboard, the tricing lines are released to allow the boat to swing outward and downward.

The purpose of tricing lines is to guide the boat to the side of the ship and hold it there until frapping lines can be used to secure the life boat to a solid object on deck steadying the boat for embarkation. In the event that the vessel is not equipped with frapping lines for lifeboat embarkation: the tricing lines are used to swing the, lifeboat against the side of the vessel after being lowered to the embarkation deck. Once the Bowsing tackles are secured forward and aft, then the forward and aft tricing lines are released. Passengers and crew passengers can embark at this point. When all are aboard, the Bowsing tackles are slacked to allow the boa to swing outward and downward. 4. Open the embarkation door of the lifeboat. Persons will embark with the assistance of the crew and will sit down. 5. When all persons are seated, tricing lines will be slackened and the life boat will swing outward. 6. With the life boat in outboard position it will be lowered into the water by using the winch brake remote control inside the lifeboat or from the deck using the winch brake handle. Typical Lowering Operation
1. Carry raft container .under life raft crane. Pull flap off container insert shackle and close hook. Make fast container line and pull out steering lines and fasten on board. 2. Open embarkation door. 3. Life raft pack by crane and swing outboard. 4. Inflate raft by pulling out reminder of operating cord. 5. Fasten raft by steering lines to the ship's side. Loosen boarding flap 7. from gunwale and secure it onto deck. 6. When raft is manned release steering lines and boarding flap. Lower raft into water. 7. When raft is seaborne, it will automatically unhook. 8. Pull back the container.
