Introduction

This part number guide is designed to help you identify and specify Timken
bearings available under the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Technical
Standard Order (TSO) C-149. This often is a replacement for an original part. By following
the steps within this guide, you may determine a suitable bearing for your specific
application. As always, your Timken sales engineer is only a phone call away.

Miniature- and instrument-type aircraft bearings are divided into six families in this
guide. Specific part number, boundary dimension, design properties and performance
properties for each family are defined in the tables. To begin specification of a part,
determining the appropriate family by visual identification or typical application is
helpful.
Family 1 – Deep-groove, radial-retainer, inch and metric design
Family 2 – Angular-contact, non-separable
Family 3 – Angular-contact, separable
Family 4 – Deep-groove, full-complement
Family 5 – Deep-groove, radial-retainer, narrow series

Thin-section and torque-tube instrument ball-type aircraft bearings are divided into
three families in this drawing. Specific part number, boundary dimension, design
properties and performance properties for each family are defined in the drawing
supplements. To begin specification of a part, determining the appropriate family by

basic envelope dimensions
of the bearing.

Type:

Torque: (Applicable to miniature sizes)
Q Q followed by a number indicates peak starting torque
limit in hundreds of mg•mm.
For example, Q14 indicates a bearing with less than
1400 mg•mm peak starting torque.
V V followed by a number indicates peak running torque
limit in hundreds of mg•mm.
For example, V13 indicates a bearing with less than
1300 mg•mm peak running torque. Torque is measured
under a 75 gram thrust load for bearings having an
O.D. of 3/8 in. or less. Larger cataloged bearings are
measured under a test load of 400 grams.

Family 6 bearings are unique because they are modified-dimension product. Those
modified-dimension bearings that cannot be described using the Timken catalog
part numbering system are described using the alpha-numeric special design part
numbering system. This is a combination of the basic bearing number from table 6a and
a sequential dash number assigned for each specific application. Basic bearing chassis
can be determined by using tables 6a, 6b, 6c and 6d. The remaining nomenclature
should be completed with the assistance of a Timken engineer.

Codes for use
in TSO part
specification

Lubrication:



LD no lubrication or dry bearings.
LO followed by a number indicates specified oil
lubrication.

LG followed by a number indicates other specified
grease lubrication.

LY followed by a number indicates other Timkenapproved lubricants.
LOV or LYV followed by a number indicates specified
oil to be vacuum impregnated into the retainer.
LOC or LYC followed by a number indicates specified
oil to be used and the bearing centrifuged.
LGF or LYF followed by a number indicates film of a
specific grease.

Standard
Lubrication is
dip and drain
with Timken
LO1 lubricant.

Torque: (Applicable to miniature sizes):





Q Q followed by a number indicates peak starting torque
limit in hundreds of mg•mm. For example, Q14 indicates a
bearing with less than 1400 mg•mm peak starting torque.
V V followed by a number indicates peak running torque
limit in hundreds of mg•mm. For example, V13 indicates a
bearing with less than 1300 mg•mm peak running torque.
Torque is measured under a 75 gram thrust load for bearings having an O.D. of 3/8 in. or less. Larger cataloged
bearings are measured under a test load of 400 grams.

Preloaded Pairs:
DB back-to-back mounting

DF face-to-face mounting
DT tandem mounting
Numbers following letter code
indicate nominal preload or preload range
in pounds.

Dimensional Coding:
ZO graded O.D.’s only
ZB graded bores only
ZD graded O.D.’s and bores
ZDM graded for preloaded pairs
having matched O.D.’s and
bores
Standard dimensional grading is in
increments of 0.0001 in. “X” prefix for
0.000050 in. increments.
