Installing Cent-OS 4.3 with PXE
Summary: This tutorial takes you through using Microsoft's RIS server (built into Windows 2000/2003) to install a linux system. You can install Red Hat, CentOS, and possibly a lot o f other Operating Systems. We successfully tested this on a Dell PowerEdge 1750, 1850, and 2850 all through it's network card via PXE (Pre-eXecution Environment).
Installing and Configuring RIS (Remote Installation Services) Requirements before install: DHCP, Active Directory, and DNS.
1. In Add/Remove Programs - Windows Components. 2. Select and Install RIS. 3. We added at least one image. On 2003 RIS we were able to add a Windows Server 2003 SP1 Image. This can be done under Administration Tools, "Remote Installation Services Setup." 4. Under Active Directory Users and Computers: Right click your root and click Properties. 5. Adding Linux to Your Images
If you wish to install CentOS 4.3, you can save time by downloading our zip file and extracting
to this path: Drive$\RemoteInstall\Setup\English . This will make all the directories necessary. 1. Download Media:Extrac21.zip for extracting the floppy image out of a Linux Distro. 2. Download diskboot.img from somewhere like [ htt p://mirror.centos.org/centos4/4/os/i386/images/diskboot.img] 3. Make the following directories in the same Directory RIS files are located (This is Casesensitive). RemoteInstall\Setup\English\Tools\PXELinux\i386\templates RemoteInstall\Setup\English\Tools\PXELinux\i386\templates\pxelinux.cfg\
4. Extract all the files from diskboot.img to ..\templates 5. Rename syslinux.cfg to default and move it to the pxelinux.cfg directory 6. Copy pxelinux.0 to ..\templates. You can get this file from a few sources: [1] - Grab the latest syslinux zip file. Or /usr/lib/syslinux/pxelinux.0 from Centos 4.3
7. Create 'pxelinux.sif' in ..\templates [OSChooser] Description="Linux Install - Centos 4" Help="Automatically installs Centos 4." LaunchFile = "Setup\English\Tools\PXELinux\i386\templates\pxelinux.0" ImageType =Flat Version="5.2 (0)"
8. Restart the RIS service or Server.
Booting
PXE
Most servers have a PXE boot option in their BIOS. A list of tested machines is below. 1. After telling the machine to PXE boot, a Welcome screen will pop up. 2. Select Continue and then enter a username/password/domain that has rights to install operating systems. 3. Select Tools and you will find Linux under the tools section.
We downloaded the DVD version of CentOS 4.3 and put it on one of our Microsoft FTP servers. That seemed to allow the system to install very quickly.

VDI assessments enable you to virtualize destops utilizing software profiles and base images. * Software Profiles Software profiles replace application profiles and can now be edited by Partners. Software Profiles allow tags to describe the software. Software Profiles can represent applications and operating systems. They keep track of individual process utilization as well as system-wide use. More computing resource utilization dimensions are shown for each pro file. * Base Image Creation System Software Cluster analysis is used to build a few images that maximize software usage. * VM Template Sizing You can create VM Templates, based on various base images, during an Optimization Scenario Analysis. * Reporting Optimization reports now includes new reports. These reports are formally known as t he Consolidation Estimator Reports. The new report is a co mplete assessment report. The controls for the output are located in the Assessment Global Settings. The link to get to t he Global Settings is at the bottom of the Optimization Report Page. This report is the only place t hat contains the following information at this time: VM-to-VM Template mapping, VM Te mplate Sizes, and Base Image Report. For the Custom Report, the display limit is set to 1 0,000. If the amount of data exceeds this limit, the data that exceeds the limit is not displayed. * Scenario The scenario now includes the ability to select by system attributes. It also has a Base I mage selection page. Selecting Base Images is required to include the Base Image, VM Te mplate Size, and VM-to-VM Template mapping sections in the Assessment Report. * User Group You can now create a user group to give users access to a company, template, report, or scenario. * Access and Permissions The security model that has been used by company roles is now extended to templates. This allows individual access to templates by a single user or a group of users. Partners and VMware can create templates that are meant only for a certain group of users. This will remove the need to create multiple companies to manage users and templates. * Date Range Selection Users can now select a range of dates to be used for the assessment. * Alerts and Anomalies The behavior of alerts and anomalies has changed in this release. * User Self-provisioning A Partner Company (only partner) can adjust the security settings in their company to allow users with the same email suffix that is supplied in the co mpany information to request and automatically approve a login account. The Partner will need to create a suffix to enable this feature adjust the Security Policy to allow self-provisioning. * Collector SSH Port setting The collector now allows the user to change the SSH port to something other than 22. This is a global setting and will not allow per system port settings for now. * Collector/Dashboard Inventory Additions The Collector and the Dashboard now collect desktop inventory and show Video Card, PnP Devices, Pagefile, and Printers for the purpose of doing desktop assessments. * Create new CE users

Installing Cent-OS 4.3 with PXE
Summary: This tutorial takes you through using Microsoft's RIS server (built into Windows 2000/2003) to install a linux system. You can install Red Hat, CentOS, and possibly a lot o f other Operating Systems. We successfully tested this on a Dell PowerEdge 1750, 1850, and 2850 all through it's network card via PXE (Pre-eXecution Environment).
Installing and Configuring RIS (Remote Installation Services) Requirements before install: DHCP, Active Directory, and DNS.
1. In Add/Remove Programs - Windows Components. 2. Select and Install RIS. 3. We added at least one image. On 2003 RIS we were able to add a Windows Server 2003 SP1 Image. Adding Linux to Your Images
If you wish to install CentOS 4.3, you can save time by downloading our zip file and extracting
to this path: Drive$\RemoteInstall\Setup\English . This will make all the directories necessary. 1. Download Media:Extrac21.zip for extracting the floppy image out of a Linux Distro. 2. Download diskboot.img from somewhere like [ htt p://mirror.centos.org/centos4/4/os/i386/images/diskboot.img] 3. Make the following directories in the same Directory RIS files are located (This is Casesensitive). RemoteInstall\Setup\English\Tools\PXELinux\i386\templates RemoteInstall\Setup\English\Tools\PXELinux\i386\templates\pxelinux.cfg\
4. Extract all the files from diskboot.img to ..\templates 5. Rename syslinux.cfg to default and move it to the pxelinux.cfg directory 6. Copy pxelinux.0 to ..\templates. You can get this file from a few sources: [1] - Grab the latest syslinux zip file. Or /usr/lib/syslinux/pxelinux.0 from Centos 4.3
7. Create 'pxelinux.sif' in ..\templates [OSChooser] Description="Linux Install - Centos 4" Help="Automatically installs Centos 4." LaunchFile = "Setup\English\Tools\PXELinux\i386\templates\pxelinux.0" ImageType =Flat Version="5.2 (0)"
8. Restart the RIS service or Server.
Booting
PXE
Most servers have a PXE boot option in their BIOS. A list of tested machines is below. 1. After telling the machine to PXE boot, a Welcome screen will pop up. 2. Select Continue and then enter a username/password/domain that has rights to install operating systems. 3. Select Tools and you will find Linux under the tools section.
We downloaded the DVD version of CentOS 4.3 and put it on one of our Microsoft FTP servers. That seemed to allow the system to install very quickly.

VDI assessments enable you to virtualize destops utilizing software profiles and base images. * Software Profiles Software profiles replace application profiles and can now be edited by Partners. Software Profiles allow tags to describe the software. Software Profiles can represent applications and operating systems. They keep track of individual process utilization as well as system-wide use. More computing resource utilization dimensions are shown for each pro file. * Base Image Creation System Software Cluster analysis is used to build a few images that maximize software usage. * VM Template Sizing You can create VM Templates, based on various base images, during an Optimization Scenario Analysis. * Reporting Optimization reports now includes new reports. These reports are formally known as t he Consolidation Estimator Reports. The new report is a co mplete assessment report. The controls for the output are located in the Assessment Global Settings. The link to get to t he Global Settings is at the bottom of the Optimization Report Page. This report is the only place t hat contains the following information at this time: VM-to-VM Template mapping, VM Te mplate Sizes, and Base Image Report. For the Custom Report, the display limit is set to 1 0,000. If the amount of data exceeds this limit, the data that exceeds the limit is not displayed. * Scenario The scenario now includes the ability to select by system attributes. It also has a Base I mage selection page. This will remove the need to create multiple companies to manage users and templates. * Date Range Selection Users can now select a range of dates to be used for the assessment. * Alerts and Anomalies The behavior of alerts and anomalies has changed in this release. * User Self-provisioning A Partner Company (only partner) can adjust the security settings in their company to allow users with the same email suffix that is supplied in the co mpany information to request and automatically approve a login account. The Partner will need to create a suffix to enable this feature adjust the Security Policy to allow self-provisioning. * Collector SSH Port setting The collector now allows the user to change the SSH port to something other than 22.
