Inside Trump University -------------------------------------------------------------------------------This Issue: Develop a Tempo When You're WorkingIssue 21The Fast Track to Success by Donald J. Trump tempo: the rate of motion or activity. --Webster's Dictionary I’ve mentioned before that when you’re the CEO of a company, it’s like being a general. You have to be in charge. You have to take responsibility. You have to instill confidence. It's also a bit like being a conductor, which is one reason tempo is such a big factor. Think about it: an orchestra, like any well-run organization, has many parts, many instruments and players, which have to play well together. The conductor is responsible for maintaining the tempo, for the managing the teamwork. My organization is the orchestra and I’m the conductor. I operate quickly, which is allegro to an orchestra. I’m very well aware of how important it is to keep the momentum going at all times, whether I'm in the mood or not. My team will take the cue from me, and I know it. An effective CEO develops his or her own tempo and sticks to it. Tempo is like an inner metronome that keeps consistent time no matter what’s going on around you. People often ask me what makes me tick. I simply respond to my own tempo: fast. Maybe yours is slower, maybe it’s even faster. We all know what speed is best for us. Stick to that tempo and keep at it. People will learn to plug into that, and you will see faster results because of it. Can you imagine if every musician in the orchestra played according to his or her own idea of what the tempo should be? It’d be cacophony, a mess. Being off tempo can destroy businesses, too. When I conduct a meeting, I’m in charge and I need people who work with me know my tempo, and they’ve adjusted. New matter what situation or business you are in, be alert to you--it will help you through every day. If you’re not in Page 1 to keep up with me. People people learn how. No the level of energy around charge yet, realize it’s

Untitled your responsibility to take the cue and respond accordingly. People talk about being in “the zone” when they reach a certain level of achievement, whether they’re runners or writers. It’s when things come naturally, a sort of synchronicity. I know the feeling when I’m making deals and I see the pieces falling into place the way they should. It’s something to aim for and tempo has a lot to do with it. We all remember what it was like to have to write a term paper. Sometimes it wasn't so easy to get started, but finally one night you get down to it and after awhile you are producing the pages without a lot of agony. Thinking about doing it was probably harder than actually getting it done. Something takes over and the work evolves. A lot of that is tempo, or getting into the groove; pretty soon performance takes over, then you’re done. In How To Get Rich, I mention that some people need a new speedometer, because their positive momentum is so slow that they couldn’t possibly expect to get anywhere. Their tempo is set at a big number in the minus category somewhere, and they still can’t figure out why they haven’t arrived anywhere yet. Some people may think they’re born losers, but a tempo adjustment just might change that scenario. You’ve got to think big and pace yourself. To get where you’re going, develop a tempo that will enable you to get you there. Chess players also use tempo, a turn to move in relation to the number of moves required to gain an objective. Note that it refers to gaining an objective. We all know that chess is a game of strategy. So is business. Think about that--and develop a tempo starting today. Donald J. Maybe it happened to you while you were writing a critical report at work. You became so immersed in the task that you lost track of time and the report seemed to write itself. There was a Zen-like, mysterious aspect to the experience because you suddenly exceeded your own expectations. If you have not felt the flow at work, you have experienced it at other times in your life. Perhaps it happened while you were playing basketball, tennis, or another favorite sport. Suddenly, you could do no wrong and everything felt easy. Or maybe it happened while you were playing the piano, acting in a play, or driving your car. The term flow was coined by Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a psychologist who wrote the book Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (Harper Books; also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Csikszentmihalyi). According to Csikszentmihalyi, the flow is a state in which you become completely immersed in a process and lose all sense of yourself. Minutes and hours melt away. A kind of enchantment sets in as you easily accomplish something difficult. Another benefit of the flow is that it helps you become a master of complex tasks you have to perform often. Once you get into the flow when you are negotiating a deal or giving a speech, you are well on your way to becoming a genius at those tasks when you have to tackle them again. There is still more good news about the flow. According to Csikszentmihaltyi and other psychologists who have studied the phenomenon, you don’t need to sit back and hope it will jump in to help you when you need it the most. You can reliably get into the flow by taking these steps: Eliminate distractions. Loud music, ringing phones, and interruptions destroy your chance of getting into the flow. For this reason, it is a good idea to set aside a period of uninterrupted time to tackle any high-stakes tasks. Turn off the ringer on your phone and let voicemail take your calls. Even better, go to a vacant office or conference room and disappear from sight until your work is completed. Page 2

Untitled Select tools that match your abilities. The time to master new technologies and skills is ahead of time, not when your need for them is immediate and critical. If you have just one afternoon to produce a complex PowerPoint presentation and you’ve never used that program before, for instance, the flow is not going to happen. Bring someone else into the process to handle the PowerPoint nitty-gritty while you concentrate on the conceptual aspects of what the slides will say. Then get the training you need so that the next time you need PowerPoint, your skills will be strong enough to support the flow. Practice. Practice improves your skills so that when you need the flow to start, it will. Athletes practice. So do actors, rock guitarists, airplane pilots, orators, and hockey players. If those busy people can find the time to practice, you probably can find time to hone the skills you need in your career. Take on tasks that challenge you. If a task is too easy for you, the flow won’t start because you won’t feel challenged. If you have ever played tennis, chess, or any other game against an opponent who is a lot weaker than you are you know how true this is. You just can’t develop any rhythm or momentum against an adversary who is much weaker than you are. You have to put yourself into situations that stretch your abilities. Finally, don’t procrastinate. The pressure you create by starting late on a high-stakes assignment might trigger a kind of panic that resembles the flow. But most of the time, stalling will only tear you down, cause you to choke, or lead to second-rate results. Start early instead, and start with intensity. Watch what happens when the flow kicks in. The results will astonish you and those around you. Barry Lenson is Executive Editor at Trump University. Workflow Automation by Adam Eisenstat Workflow, the idea of maintaining a standard approach to complex, ongoing tasks, is essential for conducting business today. When information technology became integral to doing businesses, new technical careers appeared to manage the uses of new technologies. Managing workflow became an important part of the organizational design. Global competition demands greater efficiency in business processes. The primary management goal today is to implement efficient processes within a company. Therefore, knowledge about business processes is a company's most important asset. Knowledge about the processes serves the customer's needs, helps to train new employees, and improves a company's overall efficiency. Workflow management approaches are often introduced in the enterprise to improve the processes. Workflow management is defined as the automation of a business process, during which documents, information, or tasks are passed from one participant to another for action, according to a set of procedural rules. One of the difficulties in implementing solid workflow systems is that the transformation of business concepts into information systems is a creative process, which includes many feedback loops between organizational and technical experts. In the case of published materials, workflow solutions help ensure that content is accurate and timely. This is especially important to companies, like publishers, in which content equals product. In this business environment, automating workflow allows the operation to eliminate redundant editing, control access to documents, create accountability for edits, and free up time for the Webmaster to focus on more critical Website tasks Workflow solutions provide the capabilities to track document revisions, route documents based on pre-defined business rules, and notify appropriate parties when a document reaches a certain stage in the cycle. In addition, a workflow solution allows publishers to schedule automated release and expiration dates for time-sensitive content. Page 3

Untitled One approach to workflow automation links tasks with their inputs and outputs. Every task may contain references to World Wide Web locations storing knowledge needed for executing the task. By storing knowledge in Web pages, a company is able to provide uniform and easy access to its knowledge. Furthermore, the company is able to manage knowledge by managing some Websites. Updating knowledge is carried out by changing the content of one Website. Everybody accessing this knowledge has up-to-date information at their fingertips. A problem with current workflow approaches is that the workflow description has to be created before the execution starts. For large, complex operations--engineering projects, for example-this is not feasible: A detailed project plan can only be defined incrementally “on the fly" and must often be adapted during the project's lifetime. Changes happen! Therefore, a project support system has to be able to handle them. The best workflow management systems, in such cases, are flexible and allow the company to change its work processes at any time. The system informs the appropriate users about these changes. Descriptions of the work process capture what is going on in the company and are a basis for continuous process improvements. Using these descriptions directly as input for a workflow engine, without the need to implement conventional software, allows a company to adapt its processes easily to a changing environment and changing market needs.
