Sangalang, Carmina Marie M. 2LM1 “Rizal sa Dapitan”

Mrs. De Castro Rizal Course

Many interesting facts about Dr. Jose Rizal while he is in exile in Dapitan are little known by the general public. The movie “Rizal in Dapitan” by Tikoy Aguilug clearly illustrates some of the interesting information that Rizal has done during his four years of deportation in Dapitan. A very few people are aware that Rizal chose Dapitan to be exiled to. The letter that Don Ricardo had received from the governor general states that Dr. Rizal may choose either to be exiled in Dapitan or in Jesuit Mission House under Father Obach. While everyone knows that Josephine Bracken is an adopted child of Mr. Tuffer who went to Dr. Rizal’s clinic to make his blind sight restored, but due to his eyes severe case, Rizal failed to have his sight be restored. Little do these people know that Dr. Rizal even met his wife Josephine Bracken in his clinic in Dapitan during the consultation of Tuffer. One part of the movie showed that Tuffer has feelings for Josephine and he even tried to seduce and take advantage of her. Rizal and Josephine fell in love with each other and Rizal asked Tuffer for his blessing for Josephine to stay with him in Dapitan. Josephine first decided to go with Tuffer because she is the only companion he got but as soon as she found someone to take care of her father; she got back to Dapitan and stayed with Rizal. The Catholic Church didn’t want to give and bestow them the sacrament of matrimony unless Rizal will have his faith back in the church, but Rizal didn’t want to and he remained steadfast in his beliefs. At the end of the day, they decided to be the priest of their own and just marry themselves instead. Eventually, the time had come for Rizal to know that Josephine has been a spy all along, communicating with the friars and event went to the Palace of the Archbishop. While the both of them are fighting about the said issue, Rizal had pushed Josephine so hard that it left her to be accidentally in a state of labor. Unfortunately, their son Francisco

died as soon as she gave birth to him. One of the few things that were unknown about Rizal is that he had a school in which he himself is the teacher. When Rizal learns of the fact that many of the local boys can’t afford to go to school, he built a school himself in his land in Talisay. He taught the young boys a diversity of things both academically and physically an example of which is his lessons regarding science, language, and self-defense. He didn’t accept any payment fees for teaching his young students but instead he wants in exchange is labor on his land. Rizal sa Dapitan is a biographical drama film depicting the life of the Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, during his exile in Dapitan. A cautious and careful making of the film were needed to portray the life of Rizal in Dapitan in a great extent, for it unravels our national hero’s life and thus, our historical past. The movie really tried to get close to what actually

happened, employing a large team of researchers and writers to make sure that they got things right. The cinematography was considerably good. Though it’s not a complete loss, the film’s quality should have been better and much appreciated if modern and high-definition video cameras were available during the making of the film. The performances of the cast are fine. The lead stars and as well as the other actors performances were quite engaging. Amanda Page’s delivery as Josephine had helped me to know and understand the said character better. Albert Martinez’ performance in the movie is the one I considered the best. His acting skills, specifically the way he delivers his lines struck me the most. The setting of the film was in the place where the replication of the real place where Rizal was exiled to. Knowing that they filmed in such a place makes the film worth watching for the overall dramatization and place it was film can make you wonder and be astonished on how life was like during Rizal’s time. In general, the actor’s portrayals of their own specific roles and the use of great panorama have left the audience hungry for longer scenes and for a longer film.
