1. Angie wore blue satin salsa-dance shoes by TKbrand and asked her bridesmaids to choose their own dresses in a “flamingo color” for slight variations between the shades. 2. Mike’s parents made the directional signs using two old boat rudders. 3. Stealing a kiss in the getaway car, a white Mercedes Benz convertible. 4. The ring bearers wore Hawaiian shirts printed with flamingos and alligators. 5. The bride DIYed the reception centerpieces using IKEA glassware, plastic flamingos and alligators, and hibiscus flowers from the garden. 6. The reception had open seating, and tables were topped with pink burlap, hand-dyed by Mike’s mother.

Just three months after they met in Las Vegas, Mike moved from Florida to be with Angie full-time in Colorado. The engagement followed, and they decided to return to the Sunshine State for their nuptials. The setting: Mike’s parents’ 17-acre lakefront property in Orlando, a home that has been in their family since the 1940s. “I was proud to have our wedding at a place with so much meaning to our family,” says Angie. “It was so much more personal than a church we don’t belong to and a hotel banquet room.” The 90 guests gathered at the naturally beautiful ceremony spot to watch the pair exchange vows. Chairs and a podium were set up under the sweeping branches of an oak to create a mock chapel feel for the Catholic ceremony. To complement the tropical atmosphere, the couple chose a pink and coral color palette. The party moved to the deck of the house for the sunset reception, which incorporated a Florida kitsch theme. Pink plastic flamingos bedecked the lawn, and Mike’s father handcrafted a tiki bar for the event, stocked with campy specialty drinks like the Southern Pink Flamingo and Florida Sunset. Black Bean Deli served up Cuban fare including Spanish baked chicken, plantains, and black beans and rice. As a surpise, the couple wowed their guests with a spicy salsa number. “Mike notoriously doesn’t dance. We’d taken lessons and not told anyone about it,” laughs Angie. The evening concluded with the fitting song “Florida Moon” by Gene Mitchell, and the couple departed in a white convertible — the same car they took to The Keys for their honeymoon. — Rebecca Kinnear

bride’s tip
Make sure the wedding shows both of your personalities. Planning a cookie-cutter event because you think guests expect it can be more expensive and probably doesn’t reflect either of you.
