WNY Body, Mind and Spirit
A Healthy Body builds a Healthy Mind and a Healthy Spirit
Focus on Foods, Household and Healthcare Products
As our environment becomes more saturated with plastics, chemicals and toxins, our bodies are being challenged in ways that our ancestors’ chemistry never had to deal with. In particular our foods have become highly processed and come in contact with more synthetic materials than ever before. We are continuing to learn the consequences of our highly processed food industry and its impact on our biochemistry. One of the major areas in our bodies that is effected from this artificial world is our endocrine system. The cascade of hormones and signaling mechanisms in the body help dictate our metabolism, energy, fertility, immune system and mood. Imbalance in our endocrine system and hormones can lead to a myriad of diseases and disorders. Chronic disease and obesity have become common concerns for most Americans. Many of these conditions are partially caused, if not exclusively from our food: how it is prepared, stored and types of foods we eat. Looking simply in the average American’s kitchen, we can see examples of how chemicals are making their way into our foods and how they disrupt our biochemistry.

“Not meant to be all gloom and doom – Anything in moderation, but you should be aware of many of these issues so you can make better choices in how you live.”

Foods
The endocrine system is a central control system for your body. It controls growth, reproduction, mood and mental functionality, hormone output, immunity and more. If your endocrine system isn’t running efficiently, you can suffer from fatigue, depression and insomnia, weight gain or loss, hypersensitivity to temperature and hair loss. You become more susceptible to disease and your ability to fight off infection is weakened. A diet rich in lean protein, omega oils and certain herbal supplements will help you maintain a healthy endocrine system.

Processed foods Preservatives - According to The European Food Information Council, though side effects may exist, preservatives found in food are generally considered safe. When an adult eats a normal amount of food preservatives, effects should be non-existent or minimal. In addition, the FDA regulates the amount of preservatives allowable in foods and other goods to help ensure safety and reduce the possibility of overconsumption. Still, by regulating the amount of processed foods you eat, you can reduce the effects even more. Nitrates - Nitrates are preservatives that combine with salt to help flavor and preserve meats, but they can react with other food products and be carcinogenic. Nitrates are often found in processed meat, such as hot dogs or lunch meat. Found in diet sodas and diet foods, aspartame is a neurological irritant and can affect mood and energy. I don’t recommend any regular use, especially in youngsters. I have also seen some adults who use it have emotional issues that clear when they get away from their artificial sweeteners (and excessive sugar use). Using small amounts of natural sugars, from fruit juices to honey, maple syrup, or stevia, is the most natural solution. Aspartame - http://aspartame.mercola.com/ Although Snopes lists most articles related to the negative health effects of Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal) as false, the large number of articles and references leads to a need to use caution. As with all, anything in moderation, but if you are worried, why chance it. Especially when products like Stevia are out there. Aspartate and glutamate act as neurotransmitters in the brain by facilitating the transmission of information from neuron to neuron. Too much aspartate or glutamate in the brain kills certain neurons by allowing the influx of too much calcium into the cells. This influx triggers excessive amounts of free radicals, which kill the cells. The neural cell damage that can be caused by excessive aspartate and glutamate is why they are referred to as "excitotoxins." They "excite" or stimulate the neural cells to death. Sodium – Recommended in take is 2,300 mg / day – read your labels What’s your serving size? Read the Labels Body Addiction - The National Library of Medicine’s database has 28 studies published just this year, according to Bloomberg Businessweek, with the evidence leaning strongly towards proving that there are addictive properties of foods containing trans fats, high fructose corn syrup and a number of artificial colors, flavors and sweeteners.

Canned Goods – Better to buy in Glass Soy - Soy is higher in phytoestrogens than just about any other food source. Phytoestrogens are plantbased estrogens that mimic estrogen in our bodies. No one argues, for example, that a leading cause of breast cancer, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, infertility, and low libido is unopposed estrogen, or estrogen dominance. Soy will destroy your thyroid. Many foods are goitrogenic (thyroid suppressing), but soy is king of them all. Goitrogens work by preventing your thyroid from getting the necessary amount of iodine. Say it ain’t so – even girlscout coookies contain Soy Source: http://www.foodrenegade.com/dangers-of-soy/ Although soy foods are eaten in Asian countries, traditionally, it has been more as a condiment than a primary source of protein or calories. Furthermore, most soy foods eaten in Asian countries are fermented, such as natto, miso and soy sauce, which make them more digestible and better assimilated, as cited in "Contemporary Nutrition." Making high-sodium fast foods more than an occasional indulgence may put you at risk for hypertension and heart disease. Look for a salad option when visiting these places. Stevia for sugar substitute Apple Cider Vinegar – Always use diluted – Cholesterol, Acne, Blood Pressure, Digestion, Garlic - Understand that garlic is also important to the endocrine system. Garlic boosts your immunity, increasing your ability to fight off infection. It also helps regulate blood sugar levels. You can chew one or two cloves of garlic a day, but for many people, this is not pleasant. Instead, you can include it in your cooking or take advantage of available supplements. However, the supplements are not as effective as fresh garlic. Asparagus -

Household Products Chemical levels can be up to 70 times higher inside the home that out. Over 100 chemicals commonly found in homes have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer, psychological abnormalities, skin reactions, headaches, depression, joint pain, chronic fatigue, chest pains, dizziness, loss of sleep, asthma. . .the list goes on. Housewives have a 55% higher risk of getting cancer than do women working outside the home. This most likely has to do with the products they use on a daily basis. Nervous disorders and respiratory problems have also been linked to hazardous substances in the home. Every year thousands of household poisonings are reported. Many are fatal. Approximately 70% of all poisoning accidents occur in children between the ages of one and five. Almost all childhood poisonings are caused by unsafe storage and handling of household cleaning products and medicines. According to Poison Control, dishwashing detergent accounts for more accidental poisonings than any other household substance. Dandruff shampoo, if swallowed, causes vital organs to degenerate. Household ammonia, when mixed with bleach is a deadly substance. Bug spray can remain active and airborne in your home for up to 30 years. Many of the chemicals found in our homes are used to make our lives easier. But we don't realize the consequences of using many of these substances. Think before you pour waste down the sink. Only natural substances should be disposed in our sewer systems. Be wary and read labels. And whenever possible, use alternative non-toxic products that will curtail the destruction of our Body, Mind, Spirit and the environment. Basic Chemical Safety – READ THE LABEL – Always Wear Chemically Resistant Gloves when using household chemicals. Bleach and Ammonia are very good cleaners individually but should never be mixed and always used in lower concentrations. OXY BOOST – Alternative to Bleach http://www.live-the-organic-life.com/OXY-BOOST-vsNationally-Advertised.html Roaches = Borax, Catnip Ant repellent = Soapy water, 1. Trace the ant column back to their point of entry. Set any of the following items at the entry area in a small line, which ants will not cross: cayenne pepper, citrus oil (can be soaked into a piece of string), lemon juice, cinnamon or coffee grounds. 2. Mix one liter of water, one teaspoon of Borax and a cup of sugar. Soak cotton balls in the solution and place them in a small yogurt container with holes punched in the lids to allow ants access. Place container in a location where ants are present. http://www.meetup.com/WNY-Body-Mind-and-Spirit/

BPA - Rule #1: Don't use anything made out of #7 plastic.

#7 plastic is the official "other" category of the plastic family. By and large, #7 plastics are non-recyclable, which is one reason to stay away. While many different types of plastic fall into this category, some can be dangerous to you. Nalgene water bottles, some Tupperware, some baby bottles, the inner lining of soft drink cans, and other clear plastic containers are made with something called polycarbonate (PC) plastic. PC plastic has come under scrutiny lately for releasing a chemical called Bisphenol A or BPA. BPA is a hormone, much like estrogen, that may possess significant health hazards when it leeches into our food and water. Recently it has been linked to breast cancer, obesity, neurotoxicity and schizophrenia. Yikes! Because it's difficult to tell which items are made out of which material, it's safest to just avoid all #7 plastic.

Plastic Wrap Most American kitchens have a roll of plastic in one of their top drawers. Most sandwiches and leftovers being brought to work or school are wrapped in this plastic sheet, which many times contains chemicals known as phthalates. Used in plastics to make them more flexible, phthalates are also found in hygiene products to extend the life of the product. Recent research has shown that phthalate exposure in men lowers estrogen and testosterone levels. Canned Goods - Most canned good are lined on the inside with a fine layer of plastic containing BPA. With food being pressed up against it for long periods of time and exposed to more extreme temperatures, canned foods is a major source of BPA exposure. Bisphenol A has been implicated as a cause for infertility and Polycystic ovarian syndrome as well as miscarriages. It has also been linked with cancers, including prostate and breast cancer, immune system dysfunction, early puberty in young girls and testicular abnormalities in boys.

Aluminum Pans / Foil – Avoid Cooking with – Got Crone's disease or IBS? Do you get horrible
stomach aches after eating dinner, maybe not every night, but randomly? Do you have intestinal distress, gas, cramps, etc? Evaluate how often you cook using aluminum, Baked potatoes? Cookie sheets, Pans? There are alternatives. You should use them. Enamel or stainless pans, wax paper for baking are all good alternatives. Teflon – Just in case you didn’t know - The nonstick coating used in Teflon® pans has been found to release one or more of 15 different toxic gases when heated to certain temperatures, but is generally safe when used according to manufacturers' specifications (Have you read them? No? Then why take the chance.). Which chemicals are released depends on the temperature of the pan. This outgassing can be fatal to pet birds and can cause "polymer fume flu," also known as "Teflon® flu," in humans.

Air Fresheners - Most air fresheners contain phthalates. These harmful chemicals act as endocrine disruptors—potentially causing abnormal brain development. Some studies show that phthalates contribute to the development of autism, cancer and reproductive abnormalities. Many countries including Canada, South Korea, Japan, China and the European Union nations have banned phthalates. All Purpose Surface Cleaners - Most all-purpose surface cleaners contain the harmful ingredient ethylene glycol monobutyl ether. This toxic chemical is easily absorbed through the skin. Classified as a neurotoxin, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether can cause excessive respiratory irritation and even liver damage. Most stain-lifting solvents also come with a load of health risks. Their fumes can irritate the eyes and skin. Not to mention, they have fatal effects if ingested—which is a major risk when children are around. These solvents are also harmful to the environment. Far from biodegradable, the chemicals in most traditional carpet cleaners and stain removers threaten our fragile ecosystem.
Some Alternative Products to consider Citrus Based cleaners Alternative cleaners – Method products Drain Cleaner – Baking Soda and Vinegar.
