Fountain Bowl fills needed niche By Steve Doty Special to The Times

The rap on Fountain Hills has always been the lack of places to go for youths in town. With no community swimming pool and no movie theater, kids in town have limited options, until now. Thanks to Sam and Diana Kim, the residents of Fountain Hills now have a community bowling center once again. Fountain Bowl, owned and operated by Sam Kim and Diana Song, is a refurbished bowling facility that opened just weeks ago. But this isn’t your typical large, cookie-cutter bowling alley. Fountain Bowl prides itself on providing excellent customer care and a small-town feel. “We’re not a 40-lane center trying to get as much volume as we can,” Sam said. The couple added they want to provide a fun atmosphere with friendly service that will make people want to come back. Before opening Fountain Bowl, the couple resided in California. Diana was a teacher and Sam worked in business. The couple had been visiting Fountain Hills for some time when Diana noticed the need for a bowling alley. Sam had been recently laid off from his job and the couple thought this was the perfect time to move. They noticed the growth Fountain Hills was experiencing and decided it was a better op-

Jerry Goss, a Fountain Hills resident, is pleased with the reopening of the bowling center and thinks it will really give the kids somewhere to go. Goss thinks this is a great thing for Fountain Hills and hopefully it will bring people into town to spend money here and at other places. Goss added that he, too, spent most of his childhood at the bowling alley and thinks it’s a good way to keep kids busy. Luckily for Sam and Diana, the original structure of the old bowling center was still in place and that cut down on some of

the renovations the couple had to do. The center had been closed for the past four years. But even with the original structure still intact, the couple faced a lot of work. “I think we went into it feet first and then kind of realized all the upkeep and maintenance that needs to be done,” Sam said. “It was about three months of putting in 80-90 hours a week,” Sam added when asked how long the renovations took. Right now, business has been slow for the couple, but this only seems to be the case on weekdays.

“On the weekends we’re packed with teenagers and kids,” Sam said. Opening a business can be an enormous risk, and Sam and Diana are fully aware of the dangers they are going up against. “I’ve heard of statistics where 90 percent of businesses fail within in the first two years,” Sam added. But even with the numbers potentially against them, the couple is keeping an optimistic outlook on the situation. “I don’t know if we’ll make it, but we’re going to try our hardest,” he concluded.

At a time when many firms have felt the pinch of a soft economy, Erin Hensel, owner/ designer of Focal Point Design, said “actually we’re busy and growing.” An increase in home and commercial remodeling brings business to Focal Point. “People are putting their attention to their current home,” she said. She has been helping homeowners and homebuilders design exquisite custom interiors for 12 years, the last 10 in Fountain Hills. A year ago, Focal Point moved to a new location at 16729 Palisades Blvd. next to Hud’s Custom Design Floors, a carpet/wood flooring showroom. Sharing the same structure, yet remaining separate businesses, allows customers to consider all decorating options in one location. “What we try to do is create a unique setting here in a onestop shop for remodeling and rebuilds,” said Hensel. Working with an interior designer will save clients money, said Hensel. Focal Point provides endless ideas for countertop, flooring and cabinet needs. Hunter Douglas window treatment options and customized furniture also are featured. An expanded home accessories/gift boutique that includes seasonal holiday items has been added. She described the
