The One Versus The Few Who Remain Bands seemed to have established music, but are now replaced by Multi-million Solo Artists Continued from page 1.

However, found it musicians better to that go solo are also held prestigious for their works. Songwriters like, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Bob Marley and emcees such as Snoop Dogg, Notorious B.I.G and Tupac Shakur are icons toward making their style of music popular. Whether it be a group of musicians or just one performer, each have had some impact towards music. Nonetheless, in terms of the avant-garde method of performing music, the 'two heads are better than one' approach seems to prevail. Bands were often held in higher regard back in the day than a solo artist. But the mainstream music heard today is a different story. Bands are dissipating because they are not grabbing the major media's attention like entertainers such as Lady Gaga or Lil Wayne. All of a sudden, the majority of youth nowadays are subjected to single pop icons that are becoming the centre of their trends and fashion.

Well, as time evolution and moves changeforward, take place. Thanks to the advancement of technology, electronics are becoming more and more significant in our lives. It is also up to us to keep up with the latest updates and new gadgets. In music, the development of technology has affected the way music is performed. Today instruments can be performed digitally without the performer and can be altered through certain types of software. Therefore, musicians are unneeded and only a handful to be picked. As a result, the producer, manager, even the entertainer gets to add a little bit more to their paycheques. Secondly, larger target markets are established by these stars meaning that more people are willing to consume what's out there in the media. When there are several members in a band, a fan is often in a situation where they idol a particular member. For a solo artist it is only themselves in the spotlight and thus there is

So how did this happen?

ALBUM IN R REVIEW: EVIEW: Every Time I Die Band: Every Time I Die Album: New Junk Aesthetic

Rating: th

Release Date: September 15  2009 Released By: Epitaph Records When I first listened to this album, I asked myself the question; is Every Time I Die a Christian band? In their most recent album, New Junk Aesthetic, I found a lot of references about God in their lyrics. I decided to do some research on the band since I never really taken the time to appreciate their music and eventually discovered that they weren't. That seemed to fit my first assumption of the band. With songs entitled

no need for favouritism. This affects the merchandising hence instead of pick and choose, it's just taking that one individual's looks and making it their own to feel popular. Still, if there's anything that society feeds off of from a celebrity, it's the gossip that exposes them. Gossip is the true foundation where a person can connect with someone famous realistically. It's human nature to feel better about themselves when they hear about another person's triumphs or misfortunes. For a band to have gossip is like The Pope dying; it's merely news, yet, gossip is produced by the intentions of one's soul being represented by another whose interest lies in those intentions. Funny how a derivative can show up subconsciousl subconsciously y like that.

'Buffalo 666' and 'Goddamn Kids These Days', it didn't add up. This metal-core/southern rock band hailing from Buffalo, NY seems to have produced a concoction of fear and anger into their lyrics and instruments and illustrates actions to things gone wrong, as well as emotional extremes. For instance, in the song 'The Sweet Life' (ft. Matt Caughtran of The Bronx  ), its starts off by saying, “Yea I ),

know I look worse for the wear. But I have everything at my fingertips”. De-

spite their drummer 'Ratboy' Novak, losing and two members eachMike recently becoming engaged, it didn't affect the powerful deliverance that the album brings to the table. These guys truly revisit the hard rock style in an Every Time I Die sort of way. The album is introduced to the listener with the sludgy track, 'Roman Holiday'. Personally, it didn't quite grab my attention with its slow-paced, repetitive power chord progression. Never having the pleasure of listening to a full length ETID album, I thought I would be in for a long excruciating rivet. However, it soon picks up with the following track, 'The Marvellous Slut' which stars Greg Puciato of The Dillinger Escape Plan doing some guest vocals. It took awhile, but Dillinger eventually grew upon me so I decided to give this album another shot. Nevertheless, the album grew on me. Songs, 'For the Record' and 'White Smoke' are back-to-back powerful metal and rock songs that really turn up the interest for the listener. Both also share a lot of the same musical qualities, like the pentatonic guitar riff that carries into a grimy breakdown included with 'drop d' triplets. In my opinion, they are the two best songs on this album and because of its addictiveness, will have you listening to it over and over again. Buffalo 666 is also a great song because it's both technical technical and fast pac paced. ed. The structure see seems ms to have been well thoug thought ht out. What I found to be very unique about New Junk Aesthetic were the brutal lyrics. You can tell that the artist focused on writing about true suffering. The majority of the lyrics illustrates a lost soul standing at the edge of a cliff, embracing their distraught emotions before jumping into oblivion. Although 'The Sweet Life' sounds a bit more euphoric, and even uses lyrics from Break My Stride by Matthew Wilder it still only seems like a reverie when compared to the overall harsh reality of the album. Albeit you are pissed off, frustrated or depressed; New Junk Aesthetic holds a lot of meaning during these times. So in conclusion, I couldn't really find out if Every Time I Die was a Christian band. Instead, I found a new album that I've become attached to and will continue listening to for quite some time. With it's intriguing artwork and a handful of guest vocals on side, I recommend any hard rock fans to go out and buy it.

YouTube’s effect on

Musicians Making it Easier for Musicians to release their Music.   'internet indeed killed the video star.'

Continued from page 1.

But for an independent artist, it isn't that easy. It is up to them to take on this grueling process. Only a handful of musicians are picked to sign contracts with a record label so think again if you plan on having your first hit single being played on every radio station. I've both played in a band and have somehow been involved with other local acts and it obvious how strenuous the work can get. Most of the time a band will rent equipment and record it themselves just to get the music out there. Furthermore, there is editing that comes with recording these tunes. It could take anywhere between two days to a full week to record a simple E.P. Unless you have a band manager (a lot of bands don't), shows have to be booked and online stores put up so you can build an audience. So overall, the procedure isn't the simple walk in the park that perhaps some might assume. Nevertheless, if it is something you would truly enjoy doing then it could be a lot of fun too. There's also the possibility that all your hard work will prove to be worthwhile as well.

parallel universe where everybody is connected to one another technological technologically? ly? Websites like Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube have integrated a music section to their websites for everyone's enjoyment. 17 million members have joined MySpace internationally; internationally ; 7 million of them being musicians and YouTube has over a hundred million viewers watching it's uploaded content. The best part about all of this is that any average person with some sort of techno savvy has the ability to sign up for a free account that lets you put up artistic ingenuity. It is slowly becoming more obvious that this generation finds the internet with it's networking, torrents, and file sharing programs, to be the best way to find music you want. As a result, older mediums like radio and television are becoming obsolete. It seems to be a well known fact that the

I followed his videos back to when I was in high school and thought that his musical skill was superior to many guitarists his age. When I learned that he lived in Toronto, it gave me the idea to write this article and record my first interview. I got the chance to meet him at one of his concerts with his band Closed For Tonight  outside of The Opera House in Toronto.

However, almost every musician has found an ideal medium that they can use so people can get a taste of their music; which is the internet. Over one billion people are connected to the internet worldwide. That said, what place better to upload your music than a

It's websites like these that show you don't need to be a celebrity in order to become famous. Sometimes, all it takes is some talent and inspiration, no matter what your good at, to get people to notice you. On YouTube, there are thousands of musicians, albeit guitarists, drummers or bassists that are covering songs done by major artists. This 'inter-covering' 'inter-covering ' has become a popular trend amongst musicians and they have been doing so for 5 years now (since YouTube began). Surely, if you type a certain song into the YouTube search bar, the song will come up composed by the original performer, followed by several other people trying to reenact the song. Some perform very well while others surpass the technicality of the artist and make it seem as if the song was their own. I was able to conduct an interview with

“They weren’t at How didplaying you go a about picking up and guitar for the first time?

It was years ago when I was in elementary school. I used to listen to stuff like Linkin Park and Green Day. I wanted to do vocals first and realized it wasn’t my

thing. I asked my Mom if I could try guitar, and she said sure why not and then a guitar came to my house. The first time I held it in my hands, it felt really natural so I just continued doing it as much as I can and as much as I wanted.

first, but recently they got big and because of them, I’m getting bigger.”

Awesome. So how long have you been playing/posting videos on You Tube?

About three and a half years now.  What influenced you to start covering these songs the  posting them online? online?

First, the band thing. It started with a drummer and

another bassist (previously involved with the band) and we covered F.C.P.R.E.M.I F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X. .X. (The Fall of Troy) and we got a lot of negative comments because my vocals we’re completely off, my

guitar was off due to the vocals. Everything was simplified so we can play it. So after that, I wanted to prove myself to the YouTube people I guess, so I went and did my own solo guitar version of F.C.P.R.E.M.I F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X. .X. and it got a lot of positive feedback. So ever since then, I’ve been finding op-

portunities to cover these songs and try to please the people on YouTube.  What got you interested interested in  bands like Protest the Hero and Between the Buried and  Me?

Well first of all, my friend Grant currently in my band as my bassist right now showed me Protest the Hero and the Fall of Troy when I first came to Canada. Then after following the Progressive Metal/New Age genre I began to listen to bands like The Human Abstract, Protest and BTBAM. Stuff like that.

Do you Tab these covers yourself, play by ear, read tabs? I don’t tab it out and I don’t like to use tabs cause when I do it by ear, and by memory

it feels a lot more like my own. I thought that was awesome. Anyw Anyways, ays, I did some research on your YouTube channel. You have over a million uploaded views, and almost 4,500 subscribers following your stuff. Your rated #86 most subscribed musicians of all time in Canada. I mean, your up there  with a lot of mainstream artists artists like Hedley and Nelly Furtado. Furtado. Must feel good knowing you’ve had some sort of influence on this site.  I feel like I achieved something, you know? Even though its not that major yet, it’s going down the line. I mean people are going to talk about it and it’s going to multiply I mean that’s how people get big, right? So, one moment it takes me a year to get a hundred

subscribers and within another year I have 2,000 subscribers and it just multiplies. To be honest I’m very open and happy about this and I can’t wait to see what happens in the

next few years. Even though I don’t care much for the mainstream music,

but the amount of subscribers subscribers you have following you can be compared to a small city. Every time I’ve

searched a protest song, your guaranteed to be on the first page. That’s amazing. Some of my friends told me that already and to be honest, at the time I didn’t think Protest was that big cause they didn’t have that many videos.

They weren’t (internationally). They weren’t at first, but recently they got big and because of them, I’m getting bigger.

I’m sure they seen your stuff. I would consider you to

be an internet celebrity in terms of music. Do people notice who you are outside of you tube?

Only in some places like the Protest concert. People come up to me and say are you Chin from You tube? But other than that, not much.  What about international fans? fans?

What about them? Do you have any?

To find out more about SJP, visit his band MySpace @ www.myspace.com/closed for tonight

International fans are minor contacts or acquaintances. Mostly people contact us from our MySpace from places like the UK, Australia. We don’t know each other on a first name basis, but at least we

know we have some.  Where do you see your music going in the next couple of months?

A four chapter story album. I wrote parts of that song and I hope in the next few months I can finish the next two chapters.

Afterward, I asked SJP if he ever listened to The Fall of Troy’s Phantom on the Horizon EP also known as the Ghostship Demos. He said yes thought it was good and told me that his idea shares the same as the album.
