LBF may use this statement to describe and publicize your award if you are selected for a grant.

Wrens Middle School realizes how important reading is to our students. We have done very well on the CRCT in the reading section the last few years. We have met AYP the last six years. We feel this is because of every student having 30 minutes to reading every day and teachers promoting reading across the curriculum. The books that we have been using during our reading time are old and outdated. The students read fictional and non-fictional books in the reading program that we have and we would like to provide our students with interesting books that will promote the love of reading and hopefully make them want to read the rest of their lives.

23. Please provide a brief commentary on the budget history and its adequacy. If you receive no financial support from your district or principal, please explain what you think the reason may be. Since our district has felt tremendous budget cuts, there is a need for additional financial resources to help us keep our collection current for our students’ needs. 24. 27. Please describe the priority need(s) of the school library book collection in relation to the curriculum. Our school media center is in need of fictional and non-fiction books for our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders for their reading time in the mornings. We create our reading classes based on their reading levels. So, we need multiple copies of books because an entire class would be using the books and we may have several classes on the same reading level. We want the books to be interesting to the students and the material to be that which the students can relate to. Reading material that the children will enjoy will perhaps encourage them to fall in love with reading and be lifelong readers. This answer is limited to 1500 characters, or about 150 words. 28. Given that $6000 cannot deliver universal library improvement, on which need(s) will you concentrate? How will you focus book selection to maximize the effect the grant money may have? In order to meet the needs of our students, we will conduct a survey that will ask students the type of reading material and topics that they are most interested in. At that point, we will try to locate the fictional and non-fictional books that fit the categories that the students suggested. Once we begin finding the material, we will look at reviews on the books from professional organizations to verify that they will be most beneficial to our students’ learning needs.

30. Please provide a budget outline showing the kinds of books or magazines you will buy. Please list only categories, types, and numbers of books - and not individual titles. Since we are asking for $ 5000.00, we will put half of the grant money on fictional books and half of the money on non-fictional books that are determined to meet the needs of our students based on the survey that the students completed on their interests and the reviews from professional organizations. We will use these books to encourage reading in their reading classes.
Please remember that the Laura Bush Foundation can only fund school library book and magazine requests. We are unable to honor requests for shelving, furniture, equipment, staffing, software, videos, guides, tests or exams, classroom book sets or other similar items. The students that will be using these books will be 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who are reading below grade level. These students are in reading classes each day in order for the students to read daily to improve their reading with the goal of getting them on grade level. These new materials will help get them to reading on their grade level.

32. Did you collaborate with teachers and students to determine the need for these books? Yes No

If yes, please describe the process. I did a survey for the students to find their interests in order to locate books that they will enjoy. I also collaborated with teachers to get their input on books that needed to be purchased and to determine if their were any books that would follow along with their curriculum that they would like to see added to the reading material. 33. If your school receives the grant, how will you work with teachers, students, or others to assure that the books are used? The books will immediately be put into the different reading levels for the students to use in their reading classes. The teachers will be notified of the new additions to our collection immediately. The teachers will then get them into the hands of the students to read.

35. Every school is unique. What distinguishes yours? Please provide additional information about your school, library, and students that you think the committee should have in evaluating your request for funds. Particularly address anything that demonstrates a unique and compelling book need among your students. Tell us your story. Tell us your students’ stories. Wrens Middle School is located in a very poor county. We are in a rural area where most of our students come from families with very low incomes. The majority of our students come from single parent families and a large percentage of these families do not have jobs. With the economy the way that it is, students and their families have been hit hard. A large percentage of parents of our children did not go to college and/or did not finish college. So, the administration, faculty and staff of Wrens Middle School try to do as much as we possibly can to provide students with what they will need academically so that they will become productive citizens of society after graduation.
