We started Green Irene because saving energy, water and money all make sense. Having a healthier home with fewer toxic chemicals and better indoor air quality is a no-brainer. Green Irene is on a mission to “Green Our World, One Home and Office at a Time.” Green Irene trains and supports local Eco-Consultants to assist in implementing proven green home and business solutions. Since 2007, Green Irene has grown into the largest green consulting firm in the United States with over 650 certified Eco-Consultants in 50 states.
We are not preachy green people, and we believe it is hypocritical to encourage people to make lifestyle changes we wouldn't make ourselves. We feel strongly that each of us can make a difference with simple changes in lifestyle and habits. When you start to see results, like financial savings from lower utility bills, it helps reinforce bigger and more permanent lifestyle changes. Green Irene considers the following criteria in its product selection process: • What is the product made of and is there full disclosure of ingredients? • Is the manufacturer environmentally conscious in their methodologies and ingredients? • Where are the ingredients sourced? • Where is the product made? • Is the product tested on animals?

Green Irene gives our independent EcoConsultants the tools to be a force for positive green change in their local communities. There are so many ways to work with us. In this Guide, read about our flagship services for homes and businesses that start at just $99. Consider hosting a free Go Green Workshop at your home for friends so they can be engaged in topics such as Go Green, Save Green or Raising Green Kids. Perhaps you are interested in a speaker for a community event such as a Homeowners Association meeting? How about a Green Fundraiser for your non-profit this year? You can buy products in person from your local Eco-Consultant (who may have sample bulbs, cleaning products and other items so you can see them up close). You can also purchase items over the phone from your local Eco-Consultant or through their website. In any case, you are always assigned a local Eco-Consultant to provide you local support. How We Select Products
Green Irene only recommends and sells what we consider to be the best product in each category. We only sell what we use in our own home or business and if we find a better solution, we make a switch. We do not think we help our clients by offering them a mind-numbing assortment of 15 low-flow showerheads or 20 brands of energy-saving bulbs. We pick the best so you don’t have to make a hobby out of going green.

Hosting a free Go Green Workshop is a perfect way for your local Green Irene Eco-Consultant to teach you and your friends how to jump-start eco-friendly changes that will save money and positively impact the environment. All you do is provide the guest list, open up your home to your friends, and serve light refreshments. Your Eco-Consultant does the rest, sharing tips in a 25-minute presentation on how to save money, conserve resources and create healthier homes. What is bagasse? Why is this a better material than paper?
Bagasse is the material remaining after sugarcane stalks are crushed to extract their juice. The crushed stalks, which are normally disposed of by burning, are instead taken to a processing plant where they are converted into paperboard in much the same way as wood pulp is used for cardboard. Unlike paper, bagasse products are far more sturdy, and can be used as a reliable cutting surface for tough foods. The sugarcane stalk fibers used in production are also a more easily renewed resource than the wood used in paper products.

If you take all of these steps, the reduction in energy used to heat water and lower water consumption will impact the average home-owner’s utility bill to the tune of more than $1,000 in savings each year. Heating and cooling account for up to 50% of your home’s energy use. A home can leak energy in many places. Consider installing a doorsweep to prohibit air from entering or escaping under your front and back doors.

Magnetic vent covers effortlessly block heating or cooling from entering unoccupied rooms. Both of these items are available for only a few dollars. Air also leaks through power outlets and light switch plates. For pennies you can install insulation gaskets, which will help combat these hidden drafts. If your blood pressure climbs whenever you face your utility bills, here’s the simplest solution you’ll find: go green. When you’re using less water, electricity and fossil fuel, you’re generating fewer greenhouse gases, and you’re saving money on your utility bills. Target simple, affordable, effective eco-options that fit your needs and budget. When you start seeing your savings, you’ll build confidence, and will want to do more! Lighting represents about 25% of home energy costs, and a small change here can make a big difference. Replacing just one incandescent light bulb with an Energy Star compact fluorescent (CFL) bulb, for example, can yield savings anywhere from $30 to more than $50 over the 10,000+ hour life of one CFL. Light-emitting diode bulbs (LEDs)

than comparable incandescent bulbs, and last 25 times longer. But let’s shed some light on the bigger picture. If you replace 44 incandescent bulbs (the average for a medium-sized home) with CFLs and LEDs, you can save $3,500 over the life of the first set of bulbs (based on a 15 cents per KWH). There are several steps you can take to keep your money from going down the drain. Switch to a low-flow showerhead, which can cut your hot water usage by 50%. Then add faucet aerators or our Instant-Off Saver to your bathroom and kitchen faucets, reducing the water flow to .5–1.5 gallons per minute (GPM), down from the standard 2.2 GPM or higher. Your toilet wastes water with every flush.
