Confucius Awesome Theories (DI ZI GUI)
孝(being filial and faithful to our parents and other family members )
When mom and dad, (uncle, auntie…) ask for us, we should hurry and do what they
asked us to do.
When they ask us to help them, or do things for them. (E.g. buying grocery), we
shouldn’t be lazy and can’t be bothered to do what they have asked. We should
carry out their tasks due to respect.
When we talk to our parents, we should show them respect with reverence, our voice
shouldn’t be loud and be careful of what we say, so we don’t hurt their feelings.
Regardless of they say, even when they are wrong, we should learn to take it. Because
they were the people who gave birth to us and raised us from a baby. ( Think about
how annoy babies are, they learnt how to deal with us, and raised us despite all the
troubles. We should do too and respect them)
When parents or elderly educate us or tell us off, we should listen with respect, because
they are more experienced than us, we should think about our mistake. If it is really our
fault, we should learn to eradicate the problem. And try not to cause any more trouble
for our parents.

Being a son/daughter of someone, we should learn to care for our parents (or uncle).
Observe what they need and want. And try to notice if they are ok. And give help
when needed.
Give regards or greetings in the morning or at night (e.g. Good morning, or good night)
or ask them how their day was, or what they did throughout the day. Or tell them what
you have done throughout the day. (It’s always them who ask how we are and how
our day was. We should learn to do the same.) Little things that we say or ask may
make them feel happy and warm.
When leaving the house, we must let our parents know, and gain their permission before
we can leave. (Respect). Otherwise our parents will be upset and worried. When coming
back we should also let them know.
We shouldn’t hide anything from our parents, even little or unimportant things (e.g.
Our phone). Because if they find out, they’ll wonder what else that you have hidden
from them. They might also be upset and think that you don’t trust them.

1

Things that our parents like we should do our best to collect/gain them. To make them
happy. Things that our parents don’t like,( our bad habits) we should again do our
best to eradicate them. We should also observe in everyday life what they like and
dislike or their needs. We shouldn’t wait for them to tell us.
We should learn to protect our body and not damage it. Because our parents will worry
about us, if we hurt ourselves. Our personalities, ethics or morality shouldn’t have any
issues. Because if we do anything unethical or immoral.(things that isn’t right). E.g.
hiring a prostitute. Things like this will hurt our parents’ feelings and make them feel
ashamed. (We don’t want that right?)
When our parents takes care of us and giving us their warm love, its easy and natural
to love them back right? However when our parents don’t like us or even hate us, we
should still take care of them and love them back. This shouldn’t be an excuse to
leave them or not loving them back. We should reflect on ourselves and think back
what we have done wrong, and hopefully eradicate the problems and apologies to our
parents. (And the end of the day, they are still our parents and raised us from very
little.)
When mom and dad have made a mistake or doing something wrong. Being a
son/daughter, we should talk to them will respect and try to change or correct them.
Our voice should be soft and calm (Don’t raise your voice and shout at your parents).
We also should plan the conversation and think of a valid reason. If they don’t listen
or even get angry because of what we said, we should be patient and keep trying. (No
one is perfect right?)
When our mom and dad are sick, we should do our best to take care of them, stay at
their bedside incase if they need anything.( cook for them, bring water …..Etc.) Think
back how they took care of us when we got sick. And how worried they were. (Treat
them the same)
(True brotherhood)
We should take care of our brothers or sisters. And respect them.so that conflict will not
occur. Our parents will not need to waste time and effort sort out the problems. (So it
benefits everybody.) This should eventually reached/expanded to our friends and
society.so we would respect and care for them like they are our siblings.
2

When getting along with people, don’t bother too much about benefits or money, let
other people have the bigger piece and we’ll take the smaller piece. Again conflicts,
anger or hatred won’t occur If what we want are different. (E.g., if Tom wants to
play on our badminton court, we’ll let him have it instead of fighting with him and
try to get him off the court.)
We also have to be careful of what we say in everyday life, we have to make sure that
things we say doesn’t hurt other people’s feelings. (Calling Marry artificial was
unacceptable!) We should show other people respect when speaking to them, and try not
to poke people’s sensitive area. (if we respect others, they’ll respect us back)
Anything that we do,( e.g. having dinner, walking, boarding buses…..) we should always
let elderly people pass first due to respect. (Just remember, elderly always comes first).
When see an elderly person asking for help, we should always go up to them, and ask
if we can do anything to help.

We shouldn’t call an elderly person by their name, we should always use (miss, sir
Mr., or Mrs. etc…) Again Respect. Even when they are not there.
Also we shouldn’t show off our skills neither in front of an elderly person nor in
public (e.g. your boxing skills) because this cause people think that you are arrogant and
have negative feelings towards you. An elderly person will not want to give you advice
if he/she thinks that you know everything.
( so be humble and modest my friend)
When talking to an elderly, our voice needs to be low and soft. Our voice shouldn’t be
too loud or too quite.
We should treat our uncle or auntie or other family members like our parents. Show
them the same respect that we show to our parents. Take care of them like we do for
our parents. We should treat our cousins like siblings. Show them the same respect again
like we do to our brother/sisters. Eventually this should be reached/expanded to our
friends, strangers, and the society.

o(being cautious and careful)
3

We should wake up early in the morning, and spend the precious time on something
useful.(like studying) If you don’t have a sleeping schedule and stay till very late at
night- this will damage your health, and your next day performance will also get
affected. (Confucius is saying that life is short, we should use them wisely. We don’t
want to regret when we reaches 70s)
We need to wash our face and teeth after we wake up in the morning. And wash our
hands after we have gone to the toilet. (Hygiene is important too)

The way we dress needs to be organized and clean.

When we get home, our clothes and shoes that we take off need to be put back to the
original place. E.g. coat hanger. Everything should be organized. They shouldn’t be on
the floor. (New theory: if you love or respect your processions, they will love you
back.)

Our clothes need to be organized and clean; we pursue branded clothes, or expansive
clothes. Our clothes should reflect our status and identify. (Shouldn’t be chavy or
inappropriate and give people the wrong idea). We should also consider our or our
family’s financial condition when buying things. And don’t let your vanity or
appearance take over.
In our diet, we should eat less trashy food, and contain more fruits and vegetables in
our diets. And less meat. Don’t eat too much, even when the food is delicious. Don’t
over eat and fill up your tummy completely. 7/10 is ideal. (70%). We must not be
picky on food. We must not waste something just because it’s not up our standard.
Alcohol is bad for our health, under aged children shouldn’t drink any alcohol. Adults
should still control the amount of alcohol that they drink.( we all know what problems
can occur when we overdrink).

Walk composed and calm, with light and even steps. Don’t walk to quickly or too
4

slow. Our standing posture should be straight and tall, we shouldn’t slouch when
standing or sitting. Because it reflects on our personality and giving people a bad
impression of ourselves.
Our physical impression is very important as it causes people to walk away from us or
get close/or wanting to talk to us.

Here are some other postures guidelines- don’t sit with your legs apart or sprawled out.
Or rock the lower part of your body while sitting down. Don’t put your legs on the
table either. (There are signs of arrogance and disrespect.) Especially to our teachers or
elderly people.
Close the door slowly and quietly when leaving or entering a room, regardless of the
presence of people in the room. (Respecting the people who lives or works with us)

You

And enter a room that is empty, as you

Avoid doing things in a hurry, as doing things in haste/rush will lead to many mistakes.
Also do not be afraid of difficult tasks. Or be careless on jobs that are easy.
Keep away from rowdy places or places that are inappropriate (e.g. gentlemen’s clubs
or night clubs) So our mind or heart won’t get affected by dirty/inappropriate stuff.
We shouldn’t even ask about things that are unusual and inappropriate (E.g.
someone’s affair. As they are not our business, so we shouldn’t be nosy about this
kind of stuff) .
When we are entering a room, first knock to make sure it’s permitted. Also we must
ask if anyone is inside before we enter. Make yourself heard when entering.

If someone asks who you are, don’t answer ‘it’s me’. As people can’t identify
‘me’. Always give you name and a clear reply, so that people inside would know
whose approaching.
5

If you use someone’s belongings, be sure to ask for permission before we take it. If
you don’t get the owner’s permission, your behavior will be classified as ‘stealing’.
Regardless how un important the object is(drinking people’s drink, or taking people’s
food or playing with people’s phone without permission )-This is because the owner
might get frustrated and wonder what else you have took without permission.
When borrowing things from other, we must return them promptly after using.so that
people trust us with their belongings. When others need something from us, we must not
be stingy. So later on, when we have an urgent need, we will not have any problems
borrowing from them again.
信 (Being honest/trustworthy)

Honesty comes first when speaking with others. We must carry out our promises that we
made. (Don’t make promises that you can’t achieve, as this would damage the trust
between your friendships) Deceitful language is unacceptable as this would damage your
reputation. (Businesses often lie to make consumers buy their products---it’s wrong and
we should never copy what they do)

Talking just a little is better than chattering non-stop all day. The more we say, the
harder it is to control what is been said. Only speak when you need to, so don’t talk
nonsense or trash. Speak only about what you are sure of. (the truth). Avoid using
cunning and flowery words. And don’t twist the facts of something.

Don’t use words that are mean and cruel. Or words that are dirty and inappropriate.
We should give up using this kind of language.as they would damage our reputation and
hurt other people’s feelings. (Consider yourselves as well known respected wide man
e.g. Confucius. Things he wouldn’t say, we wouldn’t say, things he wouldn’t do, we
will not do either.)

Anything we hear or see, do not express or show your feelings or opinion if we don’t
know the entire story. If we aren’t sure what exactly happened, don’t spread the
rumors or acting interest and ask around.
Things that you are unsure of, do not pass along to others. (Even when something is
6

true. E.g. .someone’s affair.—is this case we should keep our mouth shut because we
have to respect people’s privacy. You wouldn’t like your secrets being passed around
do you?)
If we are being asked to do something that is inappropriate and wrong.(e.g. something
illegal)
We shouldn’t promise or consent lightly. If you do, you will be wrong either way,
because if you carry out what your promises, you would breach you moral and ethics.
And if you don’t, your friend will lose trust in you. and you would breach the Trust
Rule as we talked we mentioned before. So greater consideration are needed before you
decide.
When speaking our words need to be clear and to the point. So people can understand
us better.
We shouldn’t mumble or talk too fast either. Because if you talk too fast, no one
would be able to heed you, the same if you humble to slow.

Some like to talk about good points in others, some enjoy finding faults in others. If
it’s none of our business. Simply don’t get involved. There is no point joining
something that is meaning and worthless. Talking about others isn’t our style. Besides,
the person might become angry and pissed if he/she finds out.

When you see other people’s good behaviors, or good deeds. You should strive to
imitate them and try follow and look up to them. And learn from them if you can.
Though you might not be able match them right now but every step you make counts. (
remember what is said- no matter how many times you fail, you are still far ahead than
those who haven’t started)

When seeing faults or bad habits in others, we should immediately reflect upon ourselves.
If we have the same mistakes or faults, correct them.(eg. taking the piss out other
people) If not, be cautious not to make the same mistake.
(if you correct one thing from yourself, you are one step closer to become something
great..)

7

When your morals, conduct, knowledge and skills are not as good as others. You should
encourage yourself to become better and catch up to others.(E.g. if someone did better
than me in the exam, we should strive and encourage ourselves to match up to their
level by studying harder.)

If the clothes we wear or the food we eat and drink isn’t as good as others. Don’t
be upset or ashamed as there is always people whose better and richer than other.
Competing with those kind of people will only create and pressure and stress for us.
(We shouldn’t compete in terms of wealth; we should compete in terms of moral,
skills, or knowledge) (知足 -Appreciation is the real happiness)

We shouldn’t be angry when people criticize us, and exited/delighted when people
compliment us. We should do the opposite, because criticisms make us realize our
mistakes.( we normally don’t consider our faults/mistakes, so we really need friends
that criticize to make us a better person). Same for the compliments, instead of being
delighted or exited, we should consider if we really have the good qualities described by
our friends and try to live up the expectations if we don’t. if we only like
compliments and not criticisms, might end up with bad company that doesn’t make you
realize your mistakes.
Compliments should make us feel a sense of uneasiness because in case of the
compliments over exaggerated us, and taking credit for something isn’t true.( as we said
before, we should strive and encourage us to live up to the expectation/compliments.) if
we appreciate and thankful to people who criticizes us, then sincere understanding and
virtual people will gradually come close to us.
When mistakes or error isn’t made on purpose, it’s still our fault; it shouldn’t be
our excuse for not taking the blame. However if an error is carried out deliberately
when knowing its wrong---it’s considered a sin and an evil act.

If we noticed something we did or doing isn’t right, we should immediately correct
them, so our mistakes/faults will slowly disappear as we try to eradicate them. However
if we try to cover up our faults or problems, this will make our issues more severe and
doubly wrong. (E.g. making excuses for not doing home works)
泛泛众 (cherish or love all loving beings)
8

For all creatures (humans and animals or even plants) we should love/cherish them
equally with kindness and respect. Human beings, regardless of their nationality, race or
religion, we shall love them and treat them equally. (Treat them the same way as you
would treat your mom and dad) at the end of the day, we share the same planet and
the same resources.
Everything we use comes through other people’s hands, e.g. our food relies on farmers,
our phone relies on workers, our security is protected by our government …..)so we
can’t live independently without other people’s help. So respect them equally and
thank them for ‘saving’ our lives.
People’s morals, ethics and conducts are sure to have a good reputation. A person with
high ideals and morals are well respected. We don’t value or respect a person by their
looks or appearances. (Think about Confucius, he isn’t the most handsome person in
the history of china; however his teachings and morals made him very famous and
highly respected throughout the world.) So don’t focus too much on our appearances,
focus on our heart.
People look upon a person’s behavior not their words. (I think this means that people
like Confucius with high morals, everything he does or say are inspirational to others. He
is well respected without ‘advertisement’. Compared with braggarts who can only use
their word to get popular. They usually don’t gain much respect. (So don’t focus on
words but behaviors)

We all have talents that we are really good at, (eg. good at football). We should never
keep them to ourselves and not wanting to teach/pass on to others. (This is a sign of
selfishness). We should always look for gaps to provide for the society. If we see good
in others (E.g. their abilities or talents), we shouldn’t be jealous and envy of them or
criticize them just because we don’t have what they have. Instead, what we should do
is learn from them and try to catch them up. And feel happy for them.
We shouldn’t flatter the rich, or be arrogant towards the poor or despite them. We
should treat them the same way regardless of their social status.
We shouldn’t give up the ‘OLD for the ‘NEW’. E.g. (we shouldn’t forget our
old friends just because we have met new friends.) we can’t just forget about them
just because we have met someone who is better. Same for our old belonging, we should
learn to cherish them and appreciate them.
9

(Appreciate what you have. Because what you have now is one of the
many things you once wished for)
If we see someone is busy with work, or occupied, we shouldn’t disturb or annoy
them, simply leave him/her alone until they are free.
If we see someone is emotionally upset or depressed, again don’t bother him with
matters. Or wait until he feels better. (Don’t annoy them by asking them questions,
you may make the situation worse)
Do we want to be disturbed or annoyed when we are depressed or occupied, if the
answer is no, then we should respect others.
Although you may know someone’s faults or shortcomings.(e.g. how annoy / stingy
someone is).
There is no need to tell everyone about it. So you should keep it quiet about it, because
someone may get really embarrassed when you exposed their other sides. (They might
even hate you for that.)
People ‘personal issues/business shouldn’t be a topic of a conversation. Everyone have
secrets and wants to be hidden from the public. (Again, they will get very angry when
you expose them or even talk about it).
(Always think from their perspective, how would they feel if I said or did something.)
Praising or complimenting the virtue of others is considered as a virtuous deed itself.
Because when others hear compliments about their good behaviors, they would feel
approved and may want to try even harder or carry out the same behaviors again. (So
your compliments are considered as encouragement that boosts the virtues of others)
Publicize other’s shortcomings or faults (as we talked about before) are never any
goods. It’s considered ‘evil’ and offence. If the criticisms have gone, or took it to
the next level, you would even get yourself into trouble.

We should push each other to the virtue/good side of the path. Or develop virtue
together (e.g. helping the homeless by gathering money).this way - we would build up
the level of our virtue and kindness.
If we can’t regulate or tell each other about our bad habits or shortcomings. Then we
are all wrong and not moved from our paths.
(This needs to be done in private, not in public, as we have to respect other people’s
10

feelings)
The amount you give or take should be clearly distinguished. The amount you give
should always surpass the amount you take/receive. (Say there are 10 pieces of cakes on
the table, and there are 11 people in the room including you. in this kind of situation,
you would need to leave yourself out and let others have the cakes.)
Before we ask for help from others, we should ask ourselves first ‘Would i be willing
to do?’ if it isn’t something I would like to do/say. Simply don’t ask others to do it.
(e.g. ‘would you do mine homework for me’. Or ‘can you lend me 20 pounds’)
Think about our reaction if someone else did the same thing to us.

We should always think of ways to repay the kindness of others. (When they helped
us.) And the grudges and hatred to be forgotten as quickly as possible. (it’s all about
forgiving and increase the volume of our heart)
Awesome quote----- (For a little drip of water you’ve received, repay with a
waterfall.)
Treat your employees with respect and fairness. You must not be frivolous but kind and
forgiving when acting in front of your employees because they look up to you. You
must not treat them unfairly and differently just because they have less social status
than you.
We shouldn’t rule our employee/or people by force, they might physically obey us, but
not with their hearts. (They might even secretly hate you). However if you win their
hearts with virtue and reasons, they will follow you to the deepest valley.
o仁(Be close and learn from good hearted people)

We are all human on this planet, but not everyone is the same. Most of us are ordinary who follow
the crowd and the society with no strength or will to change themselves.
There are only a few who are truly humane with great virtues and high moral and compassion.
Yet those who are truly humane are well respected by others. Because they don’t hide behind
words but only speaks the truth. And for sure he will not fawn to others.
11

If we follow a person with great virtues and high morals and compassion, we will only gain but no
loss. Our virtue will gain day by day, or faults will decrease day by day.
So observe your friends or teachers, if they are the humane with high virtues, if you can’t decide,
simply judge them with the teachings on this book, see if they have all the qualities.
If you are lucky enough to find one, please don’t waste the opportunity to learn from them.
(Now days it’s very hard to find someone who obtains all the qualities, so we have to learn or stick
with books like this.)
If you don’t follow or learn from those people who can benefit you, you will suffer a great loss.
And unworthy people will draw near you, thing will turn awry, its very hard for you to succeed
with those people around.

余力学文(after all the above are accomplished, this is the time to learn other knowledge. E.g.
geography, art…)
We shouldn’t continue to study on the surface, but carry out and practice the teachings in real life.
It’s no good if you are just a person with knowledge.
(It’s not about knowing but doing)
However if you only do based on your personal views, without knowing the reasons and truth, you
will be bound by your narrow views. Being stubborn to your own views or thinking you are right
isn’t the way to go. Many of the things you do might not be right and moral. Do and Learn comes
together in order to gain.
When studying, we need focus on 3 places on our body in order to get the best results out of our
studies. Our mind, eyes, and mouth. (back in the days, students in China used to read things out
loud to gain the best result. I guess you can read quietly or in your mind.)
We shouldn’t listen to music when studying, because this conditions our brain to do 2 things at
once and get used to the music while studying. However in the exams, we wouldn’t get access to t
music, so our brain might not be able to concentrate without the music, because we are so used to
have music playing in the back ground.)
That’s why you hear some people say that they work better with music on.
12

When you have started something, e.g. a book, be sure to finish it. Don’t start another when you
are not understood fully.
Focus on one thing and understand it fully before you start a new thing.
Give yourselves some time to study, don’t focus all of your studies in a short period of time, this
will create a large amount of pressures and stress for yourselves.
However giving yourselves a long period of study time would mean that each study period needs
to be beneficial and focused.
When a question comes up in your reading, make a note of it before you forget. And ask someone
with the knowledge who can give the right answer.
(We all learn by asking)

Your rooms should be kept clean and tidy with walls and floors unclutter and clean.
Your desks should be kept in good order, your pencils, pens and papers should be well arranged.
(Tidiness and organization are very important too)
If your desk or room is messy, it’s likely that your mind mixed up and not organized too
If your writing is sloppy and careless, it’s likely your mind isn’t focused. So fix your room and
writing in order to fix your mind.
Each of the books that you own should have a proper place on the shelf, or it should be classified
into sections.
After you have done reading your books, put them back where they belong.
(Small thing like these would train yourself you to become more organized. Not just with books,
but with life)

If pages or covers on your books are damaged, be sure to repair them straight away. (Love your
books; your books will love you.)
Although you might be in a hurry, while having a book in your hand, you should close your books
and put them back where they were before wandering off.

心志

If a book that isn’t written by saints (people like Confucius) who teaches us the right way of
behaving and think.
We shouldn’t go near it (E.g. Porn magazines NUTS or gossips). Those books would blind our
13

way of thinking. They would block our intelligence and wisdom and give the wrong directions in
life. So we should discard them.

Don’t look down on yourselves or give up just because you got tripped by an obstacle on the
pathway to goodness. We shall get up and kick the obstacle away and continue with our path. The
level of Confucius might be high, but we are fearless on our pathways, eventually our each small
