Haiti: Five Months aFter the earthquake

Today, ACF assists more than 100,000 Haitians living in very precarious conditions in some 40 camps throughout Port-au-Prince.

tuesday, January 12tH
A devastating earthquake ravages Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas, leaving some 220,000 dead and over a million homeless. The entire country is affected. An Action Against Hunger staff member is killed during the earthquake, the organization’s office in Port-au-Prince is turned to rubble, and all emergency stocks are destroyed. Within hours, Action Against Hunger launches a massive emergency relief operation. It is one of the first organizations to respond to the disaster. Within the first month, ACF charters four planes loaded with emergency aid, sends 30 experts in disaster relief operations to the region, and hires an additional 250 local staff members. A team of nearly 700 people, 90% of whom are Haitians, is fully mobilized to respond in the hardesthit areas.

broad public awareness campaigns to train families in emergency hygiene and sanitation practices. One thousand nursing mothers and their infants receive medical, nutritional, and psychological support in 15 “mother-baby” tents established throughout the capital, 100 tons of high-protein biscuits are distributed to children under five, and tarps are handed out so families displaced by the quake can build shelters. Action Against Hunger employs 4,400 Haitians to clear the streets of dangerous debris.
