Health Education Homework 1 April 23, 2012

Being a teacher is not easy. There is a lot to take and consider especially to be more effective in catering quality and successful teaching-learning process in education. But, if I’d pick one most important quality among the others that comprises an effective teacher, that would be the personal quality of enthusiasm that one must acquire. Having a certain level of enthusiasm encompasses all other qualities of an effective teacher, which makes it the most significant one among all others. An enthusiastic teacher is exceptionally eager to teach and share his knowledge to his students motivated principally by his understanding and appreciation of the profession. Being one, it follows that he tries his best to gain and master the necessary and other general knowledge that is required of him to be able to impart it to his students. As enthusiastic as he is, he would keep up with the innovations in his field of expertise and the present technology that would be able to aid him in teaching creatively to his students. This would most probably get the attention of the students to listen, understand, accept and instill the knowledge he partakes to them easily. Enthusiasm in one thing that a person does would make him do more and give more than what is just expected of him. He does not only concentrate on the academic aspect of education but also tries to be interpersonally and socially involved in the scholastic life of the students. This kind of teacher, more than anything else would really draw the attention and gain the love of his students which, as an effect, would make the teaching-learning process between the teacher and student fruitful and lasting. Aside from this, our enthusiasm in teaching would also be acquired by the students that will motivate them to appreciate their lessons and study harder. Liking what you like to do is one of the best elements to success, which is apparently applied in the thought of this paragraph. Enthusiasm in the field of education, therefore, is the most important quality that a teacher must possess. As the saying goes, “You cannot give what you do not have.” Based on this quote, I would study very well and make sure that I learn and gain broad knowledge about the field of my proficiency. This is to make divulging of knowledge and expertise more efficient and successful in educating my students. The more educated and

knowledgeable I am, the better service I can render to my students by imparting all my knowledge to them in the most convenient and creative way possible. Aside from preparing myself intellectually or professionally, the more important thing that I would like to dwell on is the personal aspect of becoming a teacher. I would do my best to grow interpersonally and psychosocially, and to develop a sense of enthusiasm with what I do. By reaching out more to the ones in need, starting from my friends and family and improve in extending my empathy, patience, trustworthiness and loyalty to the students and community I ought to impart knowledge and expertise to. Through this, my

psychosocial and interpersonal skills would progress and I would be able to touch more lives through my service in education. It is expected, especially in the present situation and society in the Philippines, that the people we interact with are so much of a diverse origin, distinct personalities, beliefs and predisposition, varied ways of thinking and interacting, and unique cognitive level of abilities. These factors hold a tendency to be barriers in effecting change in the teaching-learning process. To cater the needs of the different characteristics of our audience, we must consider certain ways to approach them and succeed in our teachinglearning process. Before anything and anyone else, we, ourselves, being understanding and considerate of these differences, should engage in proper values and attitude. It is essential for us to first accept this level of diversity among our students or audience and keep in mind that we also must deliver individualized and unique quality education to these people. Second to acceptance is the respect that we must express out of our acceptance and enthusiasm to be of service to them through teaching. If we accept their differences in many aspects, it would not be so much of a hassle for us to show respect. With our values, we must try our best to provide individualized education to each unique individual with distinct cultural, social and psychological, and language predisposition or qualities and not show any bias regarding this. As a concrete example, a patient is of a tribal origin with old-fashioned and traditional beliefs; or is experiencing socio-economic status discrimination; or is unable to suppress and control strong emotions or thoughts; or knows how to speak and understand in Visayan language. These are barriers that can affect the teaching-learning processes but as good nurse educators with sufficient knowledge, skills and values, we should treat them uniquely and educate them in their

most convenient way. When they find it difficult to cope with, understand or accept the health teachings that we impart to them, we should be able to take time to critically think about the best intervention fast but not risking its ineffectiveness. We should first listen actively to their difficulties or personal concerns and express our understanding and respect. Next, we must make them understand what we teach but not in the expense of harassing their current disposition. Our aim is to encourage and widen their scope of understanding of the knowledge and skills we share with them and not to force them into disregarding and neglecting their traditional and current beliefs or attitude. We should also not belittle and say that their practices or beliefs are not true, ineffective or aberrant because we know that they have their own reasons and history of acquiring these information or beliefs. We must just show that we understand them and are more of trying to encourage them and improve their established ideals and conviction. It is also best to show that we have nothing but noble and good intentions in educating them through our actions and words. Being a teacher is not stress-free nor is it just a game. We teach in order to effect affirmative and remarkable change in the learners’ knowledge, skills, and attitude. Therefore, we must consider that this takes a lot of preparation and conditions in order to be successful in our goal. What we should take into account is the welfare of our learners and not our own personal and selfish benefits. Acquiring the exemplary qualities in being an effective teacher is not sufficient if we do not appreciate our vocation and serve with all our heart. This transcends all possibilities of failure in delivering successful education to our learners.
