After a concussion, adolescents who engaged
in the highest levels of cognitive activity took the
longest to fully recover from their symptoms, ac-
cording to a study in the February 2014 Pediat-
rics.
The study, “Effect of Cognitive Activity Level on
Duration of Post-Concussion Symptoms,” pub-
lished online Jan. 6, tracked 335 people ages 8 to
23 who visited a sports concussion clinic between
October 2009 and July 2011 after suffering a con-
cussion, according to the American Academy of
Pediatrics.
Participants reported whether they engaged in
complete cognitive rest, minimal cognitive activity
(no reading or homework, and less than 20 min-
utes per day of online activity and video games),
moderate cognitive activity (reading less than
10 pages per day, and less than one hour total
of homework, online activity and video games),

ing less homework than usual), and full cognitive
activity.
Those in the highest quartile of cognitive ac-
tivity took approximately 100 days on average
to recover from symptoms, compared to approx-
imately 20 to 50 days for patients in the lower
three quartiles.
The study adds support to recommendations
from the American Academy of Pediatrics and
other groups in favor of academic accommoda-
tions that allow cognitive rest for students recov-
ering from concussions, which may speed the
recovery process.
The study found patients in the three lower
quartiles of cognitive activity had similar durations
of symptoms, which suggests that complete ab-
stinence of cognitive activity may be unnecessary.
The American Academy of Pediatrics is an or-
ganization of 60,000 primary care pediatricians,
pediatric medical subspecialists and pediatric
surgical specialists dedicated to the health, safety
and well-being of infants, children, adolescents
and young adults.

Ìn the feld of psychiatry, many people ask if depres-
sion isn't normal. Depression can mean many things
to many different people. ¨Normal¨ in this case means
¨what average people go through.¨
There are different examples of what constitutes
depression. One common kind of depression is the
depression of loss.
Nowadays, this might mean loss of a job. There are
a whole host of symptoms that one might experience if
their livelihood is threatened. For some people it may
be the loss of a love object – the death of a spouse or
a friend. And as trivial as it might sound, even the loss
of inanimate objects such as a favorite car can trigger
grief. A person may feel gloomy, sad, worried, frightened, even hopeless.
The stress of a job change is compounded in diffcult economic times
because the loss is not easily corrected by fnding a new job. Very often
people may feel this devastation for a time, but fnd ways of coping with
the problem. Other times the loss triggers a mood that one doesn't readily
overcome.
On the other hand sometimes there is no trigger and depression comes
out of the blue. A frst episode can occur at almost any stage of life.
Whether triggered or spontaneous, a person cannot always talk them-
selves out of a depression. Even the encouragement of family and friends
is not enough to bring back the joy in life.
Ìn severe depression the inability to enjoy any facet of life is called anhe-
donia, or as one patient said, ¨Ìt's the opposite of hedonism.¨
Biologically caused depressions often have physical symptoms:
1. A loss of appetite or its opposite, overeating;
2. Waking up too early or sleeping all the time;
3. A loss of interest in usual activities or agitation, just not being able to
sit still.
A particular feature of some biologic mood disorders is feeling worst
upon waking, gradually getting better as the day goes on. The next morn-
ing one fnds herself or himself back in the pit again.
When hit by one form of depression or another, one decides whether
to get professional help based on many considerations. Ìf it's a frst-time
event, the tendency is to try to ride it out, hoping that it will go away.
Some say, ¨Ìt's my fault that Ì'm depressed. Ì just have to think right and
Ì'll get better.¨ Or some people just pull inwards and don't have the energy
to move, much less go to a psychiatrist.
Talking therapy and often medications can pull one out of a depression
faster and in the case of recurring depressions keep them from coming
back.
Ìf there is weight loss, inability to sustain oneself and/or suicidal ideation,
it is all the more important to seek help. Ìt's better to get help sooner than
later when there is any question of a person's being safe.
There are some people who never experience a loss deeply or who
always bounce back without diffculty. Some people are content with their
lives and themselves.
For the 25 percent of the population who experience at least one epi-
sode of major depression (clinically signifcant depression) it is important
to know that help is at hand and that can make a dramatic difference in the
course of the illness.

Americans eat out at fast food or dine-in restaurants
four or five times a week. Just one of those meals might
contain more than an entire day’s recommended amount
of sodium.
The Centers for Disease Control has strategies for
health departments and restaurants to work together to
offer healthier choices for consumers who want to lower
their sodium intake. The report, “From Menu to Mouth:
Opportunities for Sodium Reduction in Restaurants,” is
published in the Jan. 23 issue of CDC’s journal, Prevent-
ing Chronic Disease.
On average, foods from fast food restaurants con-
tain 1,848 mg of sodium per 1,000 calories and foods
from dine-in restaurants contain 2,090 mg of sodium per
1,000 calories.
The U. S. Dietary Guidelines recommend the general
population limit sodium to less than 2,300 mg a day. Too
much sodium can cause high blood pressure, one of the
leading causes of heart disease and stroke.
“The bottom line is that it’s both possible and life-sav-
ing to reduce sodium, and this can be done by reduc-
ing, replacing and reformulating,” said CDC Director
Tom Frieden, MD. “When restaurants rethink how they

Frigid weather can pose special
risks to older adults.
The National Institute on Aging
(NIA), part of the National Insti-
tutes of Health, has some advice
for helping older people avoid hy-
pothermia, which occurs when the
body gets too cold, during cold
weather.
Hypothermia is generally de-
¿QHG  DV  KDYLQJ  D  FRUH  ERG\  WHP-
perature of 95 degrees Fahrenheit
or lower and can occur when the
outside environment gets too cold
or the body’s heat production de-
creases.
Older adults are especially vul-
nerable to hypothermia because
their bodies’ response to cold can
be diminished by underlying med-
ical conditions such as diabetes
and by use of some medicines, in-
cluding over-the-counter cold rem-
edies. Hypothermia can develop in
older adults after relatively short
exposure to cold weather or even
a small drop in temperature.
Someone may suffer from hy-
pothermia if he or she has been
exposed to cool temperatures and
shows one or more of the following
signs: slowed or slurred speech;
sleepiness or confusion; shivering
or stiffness in the arms and legs;
poor control over body move-
ments; slow reactions, or a weak
pulse.
Here are a few tips to help older
people avoid hypothermia:
Make sure your home is warm
enough. Set the thermostat to at
least 68 to 70 degrees. Even mild-
ly cool homes with temperatures
from 60 to 65 degrees can lead to
hypothermia in older people.
To stay warm at home, wear
long underwear under your
clothes, along with socks and
slippers. Use a blanket or afghan
to keep your legs and shoulders
warm and wear a hat or cap in-
doors.
When going outside in the cold,
it is important to wear a hat, scarf,
and gloves or mittens to prevent
loss of body heat through your
head and hands. A hat is partic-
ularly important because a large
portion of body heat can be lost
through the head. Wear several

Sitting for long periods increas-
es heart failure risk in men, even
for those who exercise regularly,
according to new research pub-
lished in the American Heart As-
sociation journal Circulation: Heart
Failure.
Preventing heart failure, re-
searchers found, requires a two-
part behavioral approach: high
levels of physical activity plus low
levels of sedentary time.

and sedentary time, said Debo-
rah Rohm Young, Ph.D., lead re-
searcher and a senior scientist at
Kaiser Permanente in Pasadena,
Calif.
“Be more active and sit less. That’s
the message here,” Young said.
Researchers followed a racially
diverse group of 84,170 men ages
45 to 69 without heart failure. Exer-
cise levels were calculated in METs,
or metabolic equivalent of task, a
measure of the body’s energy use.
Sedentary levels were measured in
hours.
After an average of nearly eight
years of follow-up, researchers
found:
Men with low levels of physical ac-
tivity were 52 percent more likely to
develop heart failure than men with
high physical activity levels, even
after adjusting for differences in
sedentary time.
Outside of work, men who spent
¿YH  RU  PRUH  KRXUV  D  GD\  VLWWLQJ 
were 34 percent more likely to de-
velop heart failure than men who
spent no more than two hours
a day sitting, regardless of how
much they exercised.

cally active and sat for two hours or
less a day.
Study limitations
Since no women were studied the
results may not apply to them; re-
sults were self-reported, which could
mean physical activity was over re-
ported; results were based only on
time outside of work and can’t be
applied to overall sedentary activity;
and participants were members of
comprehensive health plans, so re-
sults may not apply to men lacking
health insurance.
The study supports the American
Heart Association recommendation
that people get at least 150 minutes
a week of moderate-intensity aerobic
activity to reduce their risk for heart
failure and other cardiovascular dis-
eases, Young said.

Cape May Holistic Journey
begins its fourth year
Cape May Holistic Journey was born in 2010 from a desire to bring
together like-minded people who are interested in spiritual and meta-
physical topics in the greater Cape May County area.
Joan Malec and Louise Sinn co-founded the group, which explores
alternative methods to achieve personal growth, improve life and re-

the mind, body and spirit.
Cape May Holistic Journey has organized retreats, meditations,
and various workshops. Its book clubs, scheduled twice a year and
lasting approximately 10 weeks each, explore such authors as Car-
oline Myss, Louise Hay, and Dain Heer.
It also sponsored a fundraiser and screening of the award-win-

With the introduction of facilitators near and far, Malec and Sinn
are bringing some new programs to the area for 2014.
They draw their inspiration from their personal interests and

Stabilizing muscles help fa-

smaller muscles helping out the
big muscles, over time we can
injure ourselves by using repet-
itive motion and getting in bad
movement habits.
Yoga helps correct that by
getting all the muscles work-
ing and strengthening and
stretching, which enables better
range of motion and more body
awareness. Take this into ev-
eryday life and daily movement
becomes easier and helps de-
crease injury.

rants have worked together to offer lower-sodium choices.
Health department dietitians can help restaurants analyze the sodi-
um content of their foods and recommend lower-sodium ingredients.
Restaurants can clearly post nutrition information, including sodi-
um content, at the order counter and on menus or offer lower-sodium
items at lower cost.
Health departments and restaurants can explain to food service
staff why lower sodium foods are healthier and how to prepare them.
The report also features examples of sodium reduction successes.
In Philadelphia, the health department worked with 206 restaurants
to create the “Philadelphia Healthy Chinese Take-out Initiative.”
After evaluating menus for sodium content, participating restau-
rants began choosing lower sodium ingredients and creating lower
sodium recipes. After nine months, analyses of two popular dishes
offered by 20 of the restaurants showed sodium was reduced by 20
percent.
“The story in Philadelphia shows what can
be done,” Dr. Frieden said. “It’s not about
giving up the food you love, but providing
lower-sodium options that taste great.”
