Hell is a City The froth of humanity congeals on the street Lost tempers flair while the meek seek take retreat Venom spews forth with nary a care Sadness runs rampant, nights filled with despair The lonely gather in cesspools of light In groups they call gangs to show off their might Good words they are rare, good deeds they are none Tough action in the alleys, what the hell have we done Side by side with the gloom and stretching so tall Mighty towers of commerce, the cause of it all The spent kick, claw and scratch their way through To make one of three payments, hope that’ll do We have toiled for years now see all we’ve wrought From the fresh virgin soils, all the glory we sought The fumes and the heat, all the abnormal sights Now where is that soul who can set it all right It seems that Hell is a city, devouring the land Ceaseless, relentless and wielding its iron brand Now imagine a forest, a mountain, the moon or a lake Get your head out of the cloud and your poor soul a break Hell is a city Life is the land Stop all this madness Stop the hot iron brand Mw/94
