Mobile phone anger
I THINk your little magazine Heswall local is very well produced and useful for its
various pieces of information. Your January issue page 4 carried an item about a
23 year old man being penalised for using a moblie ‘phone while driving; this might
well draw a response from your readers complaining about how FEw drivers are
penalised for using mobile ‘phones while driving. I would say that it is a disgrace
having a law which is so widely fouted. When the Heswall police do make a using-
mobile-phone-while-driving exercise, the spotting offcer usually positions himself/
herself on the crest of the hill outside the police station wearing a bright yellow jacket;
motorists who are apprehended should be charged with failing to keep a proper look
out, let alone for the mobile ‘phone offence!
Thanks for the magazine.

What the
The frosts and snow from November
through to January will have
taken their toll on some of
the more borderline
hardy plants. One
of my evergreen
shrubs, a
Pittosporum,
which came
though last
winter has now
started to lose
leaves and will
probably need
replacing. I will
see if it sends
up new growth
in spring but if
not, I will regard
it as an opportunity
to so shopping and try
something new!
Start to tidy up by cutting
back dead foliage
on perennials and
grasses to allow new
growth to come
through. Prune
fruit trees and
wisteria. Older
Wisteria plants
can be pruned to
remove old stems
and long whippy
growth back to a few
buds. Prune back to
plump buds on newer growth
and cut out some congested older
branches each year to leave younger
stems to grow on.
The frst bulbs such as snowdrops and crocuses
will start to show but may fower later this year
after the hard winter. Hellebore plants will
be fowering. If you do not have these in your
garden they are well worth trying as
they can stand some full sun and
shade with the bonus of large
fowers in the depths of
winter.
There are some
clematis that fower
in late winter so try
Clematis cirrhosa
with small bell like
fowers or Clematis
armandii Apple
Blossom with larger
pink fowers. Both
are scented and have
evergreen foliage. Best
planted on a south or
west facing wall, fence or
trellis.
The vegetable garden can be
started with buying some
seed potatoes selecting
an early variety such
as Arran Pilot or
Pentland Javelin.
Start them off
by chitting in a
light, frost-free
dry area so that
they develop
short shoots prior
to planting out in
mid spring. Planting
tomato seeds in pots on a
windowsill later in February
will give you a head start for
planting out when frosts are past.
Mulch all fruit trees, bushes and cane fruit with
a generous layer of well rotted manure around
the roots and apply a general purpose fertilizer
to set the plants up for the coming season.

Never marry for money. Divorce for money – Wendy Liebman
IT was early in 2006 that ‘Friends of
the Sea’ was formed by a group of
people who saw the need to promote the
education of young seafarers and assist
in the welfare of the elderly, disabled and
those seafarers who are in need.
“Our success is due to the generosity
from the general public, commercial
organisations and from the efforts of the
committee of volunteers,” said chairman
Patsy Dixon, from Parkgate.
“Among the benefciaries, we have
included Sea Cadet units who bought
tents, oars, kayaks, computers, whilst
others have received grants to pay
for training events on TS Royalist and
donated to the Liverpool Seafarers
Centre.”
They sponsor annually a sailing
charter for young people selected by
the Merseyside Police/Hoylake Sailing
School project “Chance of a Lifetime”
while this year 4th Heswall St Peter’s
Sea Scouts received a grant towards a
replacement safety boat. The Marine
volunteer Service was given funds which
enabled them to purchase a 2.9m Dinghy/
Tender; this vessel is now evident in
Albert Dock and used for the training of
young people in navigation, boat handling
and general seamanship. The group
have recently been able to assist the uk
North Blind Sailing association to promote
the participation of blind and partially
sighted people and fund sail training
opportunities.
Without the fnancial help from ‘Friends
of the Sea’, there are many young and
disabled people who would not have the
opportunity to improve and advance their
maritime education.

Q. As a form of exercise I like to swim, however I am
fnding that my skin has become much drier and quite red
across the cheeks since taking up this form of exercise.
Any suggestions on how I can correct this?
A. Swimming is an excellent form and of course exercise
is great for yoir skin by stimulating the blood circulation
which brings with it fresh oxygen and nutrients to all skin
cells giving the skin a healthy glow. However if you are
regularly swimming in a chlorinated pool the chlorine can
be very aggressive on the delicate skin of the face. Combine
that with the length of time that swimmers are
often submerged in the water - it can all add up to
a potentially very unhappy skin! Before swimming
consider applying a protective barrier to your
skin such as petroleum jelly, this will help to
protect the delicate facial skin from the chemical
irritants in the water. Visit the newsletter page at
www.angelabartlett.co.uk for further top tips on
maintaining good skin condition during swimming
and other sports activities.
Q. I have recently read in a magazine that
adding nail varnish remover to gloopy nail
polish will revive it. Is that true?
A. That very much depends on the formulation
of the varnish remover. Many removers have
additional conditioning ingredients in them and
you could end up ruining your polish. If the
polish is really old it may be worth a try if it’s
an experiment with remover or the bin! But visit
the newsletter page at www.angelabartlett.co.uk
to fnd out how to keep your varnishes in tip
top condition without risking using nail varnish
remover.

Heswall Local February 2011 29
I’ve been on so many blind dates I should get a free guide dog – Wendy Liebman My girlfriend told me she was seeing another man. I told her to rub her eyes – Emo Philips
One dark misty night in 1966, I was
driving to the south of england when a
glance in the rear view mirror revealed
a tiny sleek sports car catching me up,
quickly. next moment it was passed and
gone. That experience left me with
a strange combination of
feelings I’ve never
quite forgotten.
Half of me was
coveting the
little car,
the other
half was
thinking,
“That
looks
scary”,
such was
my frst
encounter
with the 2 litre
Triumph GT6.
Unbeknown to me then,
later in life I was going to have
a lot more to do with these little cars. 22
years later in fact, when my son bought a
black one and shortly after that I met Bob
Barton, who started Triumph Appreciation
with me, Bob had a yellow one. This month
we are looking at Andy Todd’s magenta
GT6...which is perhaps even more scary
than the one I frst encountered. Why is
that? Because Andy has swapped the 2 litre
six for a 2.5 litre six and we all know what
big engines do in small cars.
Andy bought his car in 1994 shortly after
it’d had a comprehensive restoration to
its bodywork by David evans of neston.
Over the following years Andy meticulously
rebuilt the 2 litre engine and the front and
rear suspension, Andy always likes it when
things both look good and work well.
In 2004 Andy decided to enlarge the
engine to 2,500cc. This can actually be
done in the same engine block
by installing a longer
stroke crankshaft and
a different set of
pistons. To get
the most out of
the new set up
Andy carefully
chose the
camshaft,
carburettors
and needles
for best
running. Still
in search of
improvement,
three years later,
he ftted an electronic
ignition system which
can fne-tune itself to the
engine moment by moment. This, he says,
brings an entirely new level of smoothness
to an already sweet engine and is the best
modifcation he has made.
Regular maintenance has ensured the car
is very reliable for both long runs and day
to day use when needs must. Andy sums
it up by saying the car is ‘Very enjoyable,
different and gets lots of attention’. There
are three GT6 in our club at the moment
and one glance at the picture says it all!

The fastest way to a man’s heart is through his chest – Roseanne
Fiction: Trespass- Rose Tremain
In a silent valley in southern France stands an isolated
stone farmhouse. Its owner, aramon Lunel, is an
alcoholic haunted by his violent past. His sister, audrun,
alone in her bungalow within sight of the farmhouse
, dreams of extracting retribution for the unspoken
betrayals which have blighted her life. Into this world
comes anthony verey, a wealthy but disillusioned
antiques dealer from London, seeking to remake his life
in France. From the moment he arrives a frightening
and unstoppable series of events is set in motion. I
won’t tell you more as I don’t want to spoil it for you!
Beautifully written with some very haunting moments
this is a wonderful picture of a special place and some
of the people who live there. Longlisted for last year’s
Booker prize, a fantastic novel by a greatly loved writer.
Strongly recommended for Book Clubs.
Travel Biography: The Great Explorers - Robin Hanbury-Tenison
It has always been mankind’s gift (or curse) to be inquisitive, and throughout the
ages certain people have been inspired to explore the limits of the world known to
them- and beyond. These people changed our perception of our surroundings through
their courageous adventures. But what drove such great explorers to venture into
unknown and unforgiving lands, facing almost unimaginable challenges and risking
death? In this series of biographies the stories of 40 explorers are described, their
lives revealed and their motives and passions examined. Each chapter is written by
a distinguished travel writer, broadcaster or historian who has a special interest in
the character they are introducing. The book is stunningly illustrated with beautiful
paintings, photographs, engravings and maps so we can experience the adventures
through their own eyes and in their own words. a brilliant present for anyone who
loves to travel.
Teen Fiction: Revolution- Jennifer Donnelly
This is Jennifer Donnelly’s second novel for young adults: her frst, The Gathering
Light, won the Carnegie medal and was one of the original Richard and Judy Tv
Book Club selected books. Partly set in present day New York and partly in Paris at
the time of the Frernch revolution, this is the romantic, utterly engrossing story of
two girls, two boys and the heart-wrenching thread that binds them together across
the centuries. What makes the book so readable is the fact that in spite of being 200
years aapart the two heroines have the same feelings and struggles. Better written
than many contemporary teenage novels, yet with a thoroughly absorbing plot.
