Well!! I've got my bridge finished well ahead of schedule and  Well!! have crossed to the other side several times without significant incident. Of course I used a lot of quality control and tested the strength of the bridge on numerous occasions, but best of all the missus never even caught on as to why I insisted she jump up and down in the middle. You see, I had spent a lot of time doing very sophisticated calculations in order to figure out the size and number of logs needed. But this bridge was considerably longer than a previous one I had built and my newer tractor was quite a bit heavier due to the loader and the cab. After weeks of figuring what the actual  weight of the tractor might be and what what the strength of a 10" 10" log sitting beside a 9" log might be, it finally dawned on me that I was just totally guessing. Oh Honey!!! Before the completion of the bridge, however, however, I did need to go out on it several times in order to prepare the landing on the other side. This went quite well until I nearly dropped a front wheel right through as a couple of logs decided to separate. Easing forward, I successfully got off the bridge but on the wrong wrong side. So I had to pause for a few minutes and ponder this little dilemma. One of the great advantages of having a tractor with a cab and various holders for carrying stuff, is that I happened to be reasonably equipped to deal with almost any emergency. Hanging off one of my outside brackets was an old "come along". With the tractor out of the way I was able to run the cable all the way around the offending logs and crank them tightly so that when I backed up over them again they were secure. Yeah!!! Now that the bridge is fully open for business, my first priority is to try and sell it. My thought is that after 20 years or so, the bridge might require maintenance and I don't want to get stuck with the bill for the millions that it might cost if I can't do it myself. I figure the tourism potential of the millions waiting to tour the backwoods of Nauwigewauk  would make this a real steal for any government willing willi ng to invest $40 million or so. Failing to come up with a dumb ... er ... interested buyer I may turn it into a toll bridge. At an average fee of $10 per crossing I can recoup my i nvestment in about 50,000 years or so. Please support my bridge!! If the missus ever discovers my reason for her jumping up and down ... I am going to need the funds to build a bridge to someplace far f ar,, far away. 800

It's amazing the things you find in your basement or storage  when you decide to clean things out. Would you re-discover the car seat you used when your 11 year old was an infant? Could you find a baby walker with wheels that has been passed along in your family for almost 20 years? When going through your old household items, Child Safety Link would like to remind you that some things found in the home can be very dangerous to children. The Consumer Product Safety division of Health Canada is responsible for the careful regulation and use of items that are available to Canadians. For example, we can thank Consumer Product Safety and Health Canada for the national ban on baby  walkers with wheels. Since April of 2004, it has been illegal to import, buy or sell a baby walker with wheels. Did you know that when walkers with wheels were available in Canada, more than 500 babies using walkers were injured ever y year? That's more than three babies every day. Other infant products such as baby bath seats or bathtub rings and accordion style baby gates are very dangerous to  young children. Baby bath seats and rings sometimes give parents a false sense of security. They feel that their baby  would be supported upright in the tub if they ran to answer the phone or grab a towel from an upstairs closet. If the baby slips under or tries to climb out of the ring, they could become trapped under water. A child can drown in as little as two inches of water, and in a very short amount of time.  Accordion style baby gates are dangerous because their openings are large enough for a child's head to be trapped, and can cause strangulation. If you find expired car seats, accordion baby gates or baby  walkers with wheels in your home, Child Safety Link recommends that you destroy these items and place them at the curb for garbage pickup. Cut the straps and padding and break the shell of old car seats and cut the seat, remove the  wheels and break the tray of old baby walkers. Dismantle old accordion style gates with a saw or a wrench if there are bolts. Consider putting the pieces in separate dark garbage bags so that passers-by won't be tempted to reuse these items in their own homes. For more information children's injury prevention, and on Consumer Product Safety and the latest product recalls, visit  www.childsafetylink.ca for access to all of our resources and a link to the Healthy Canadians Website from the Government of Canada. 917

ILLEGAL DUMP HOTLINE

61 Marr Road, Rothesay, NB E2E 5Y8 (506) 847-5146

Illegal dumps have no boundaries. In New Brunswick they can be found along public roads, near streams, on private property, along railroad lines, and other out-of-the-way places. Illegal dumping is misplaced solid waste and raises concerns over safety, property values and quality of life. It is also referred to as ‘open dumping’, ‘fly dumping’, ‘midnight dumping’, and ‘wildcat dumping’, because materials are often dumped in open areas, from vehicles and, at t imes - late at night. An examination of the literature suggests economics and low risk are factors affecting decisions to illegally dump. More specifically, research indicates those who illegally dump do so because they: Lack a sense of ownership; Believe someone else will clean up what they have disposed of; Lack public awareness about the health and environmental risks. If you are aware of an illegal dump site, please contact the “Illegal Dump Hotline”, or use another avenue, should you prefer, being sure to provide sufficient information as to location: Toll-Free 1-877-777-4218; Fax (506) 847-1369; Email [email protected]. 827

MAMMOGRAPHY

Health Minister Mary Schryer and officials from the Horizon Health Network announced recently that the provincial government is providing financial support for a digital mammography unit at the Sussex Health Centre. "To fight breast cancer we must have a high-quality health-care system equipped to respond to the needs of those battling this disease," said Schryer. "I am pleased that the new digital mammography unit  will allow for the expansion of breast cancer screening services, increase patient access, reduce wait times, and improve image quality." The Department of Health is providing three annual installments of $56,000, totalling $168,000, to the Sussex Health Centre Foundation's fund-raising campaign to acquire the new unit. The goal is to have the unit operational in 2012. The centre is one of 16 breast cancer screening sites in the province. "Early detection of breast cancer is a vital part of the successful treatment of the disease," said Donald J. Peters, president and chief executive officer, Horizon Health Network. "This new digital mammography unit will make high-quality images readily available, playing a key role in helping patients overcome breast cancer. Horizon Health Network is very grateful for the support of the Department of Health and the Sussex Health Centre Foundation in obtaining this piece of equipment." Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the secondleading cause of death among women in New Brunswick.  Women between 50 and 69 have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than women in other age groups. Screening is recommended every two years for these women. "The foundation is very pleased be able to bring the new digital mammography unit to the Sussex Health Centre in the near future," said Anthonie de Hoog, president of the foundation. "We are delighted by the announcement made today by Minister Schryer, which will help us greatly in achieving our goal.” 515

HOW WELL DOES YOUR CHILD BEHAVE? Parents, are you tired of bargaining with your children just to get a little cooperation? Are you frustrated by their lack of respect? Here are a few great ideas from child behavior expert Ronald Morrish, author of the book “Secrets of Discipline” (ISBN 0-9681131-0-9) “Do-overs” - Contrary to popular belief, consequences will not teach good behaviour. Only correction and  positive practice will do the job. So instead of saying, “if you talk that way to me again, you will go to your  room!” try saying “We don’t speak that way in our home. Now start over.” Temper Tantrums - On this issue, research is very clear. You must never give in to temper tantrums. If children get what they want just once out of every ten tantrums, that is enough to keep the tantrums going. In fact they will get louder, longer and more violent. So don’t give in. Teach skills and manners - You can reduce behaviour problems and help your children increase their responsibility, independence and self-control by teaching them skills and manners. Children who say “please”, “thank you” and “excuse me” have skills that serve them well throughout their lives.

Ronald Morrish will be speaking in School District 6 at Sussex Regional High School on Monday, August 30 and at the Kings Valley Wesleyan Church (322 Hampton Rd, Quispamsis)   on Wednesday, September 1, both sessions starting at 7 pm. You will have many “ah-ha!” moments as you learn about ideas that are practical, effective, and immediately applicable. All parents are welcome to these free presentations. This Fall, HALL will be holding workshops for parents on how to raise well-behaved children using Mr. Morrish’s book, “The Secrets of Discipline”. For details check future editions of the HALL Family Page or visit the HALL website.

MASSAGE MATTERS

OUCH! Is it just me or are there more wasp nests around this summer? Now I am normally a live and let live kinda gal. If  you don't bother me I won't bother you and we can all coexist in the same spa ce quite nice ly. Wasps do not seem to prescribe to this philosop hy, however. In fact, some can be downright cranky! So I eyed with some trepidation the  wasp nest on the eave of the garage , but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. I then discovered another nest devel oping on the eave of the house, fairly close to the main door. Hmmm . . . . but a peaceful detent e seemed to be in place so I was willi ng to leave them be. Was. I was working in the back of the house transplanting a  vine to the base of the deck post (nowhere near the two  wasp nests in the front) when I was stung . At which point I discovered yet a third nest (the largest by far) beneath the deck. Okay, detente was over! That wasp was dispatched in short order and I moaned and griped for a mite and vowed revenge. And rather than listen to my continued mutterings Michael bought some wasp killer and the nests are no more. Well at least two of them. The on e on the front eave is still in place, but hopeful ly dead. The last time I can recall being stung was when the kids  were young and we were blueberr y pick ing on the hill behind the house in Kingston. Our youngest was still in diapers, which was fortunate for her since when she stood up we discover ed she had been parked dire ctly on top of the  wasp nest in the ground. They were somewhat unhappy  with their home having been squashed by her diapered behind and made that displeasure known as soon as she stood up. A mad dash to the house was in order, with Michael and daughter numbe r one well out in front while I  was left to grab the offending daughter number two and carry her whilst ensuring the wasp that had crawled up my pant leg was kept in a firm grip so as to not continue stinging all the way down the hill and into the house. Ouch! "The serpent, the king, the tiger, the stinging wasp, the small child, the dog owned by other people, and the fool: these seven ought not to be awakened from sleep." ~ Chanakya. Good advice!

Pre-Paying Your Funeral Why would anyone pay in advance for something that they will not receive until sometime in the future? Because in doing so, you will be deciding what is and is not important for your funeral service and you will be relieving financial burden from your spouse and or children. Let's say that you pick out a casket and funeral services that add up to $8,500.00, and you don't die for another 10 years. Those same services won't cost your family any more money. Most importantly, they won't have to decide what you would have wanted, and where the money is going to come from. There are a thousand and one questions that need to be answered in a short amount of time when someone dies. If you have pre-paid and completed many of the questions, your family can use their energy at the time of death on taking care of each other and immediate needs, not deciding about which casket to pick and which services you really wanted? Payment options are monthly, quarterly, or annually, or with a one-time payment. Celebrate The Lives Of People You Love
