HOMES

Time to head into the garden
AS the seasons and
weather change, now is
the time to head outside
and consider what needs
doing in the garden.
From checking the condition of fences, walkways
and sheds to seeing how
your plants have coped with
the wintry conditions, here
are are some of the top
tips on things to do in the
garden this week:

l In the greenhouse, prick
out seedlings and space
them in bigger trays when
they are big enough to
transplant.
l Sow broad beans in pots
under glass for planting out
later.
l Place cloches over vegetable patches to warm the
soil before planting.
l Plant new roses before
spring.
l Plant new bare-rooted
hedging plants from specialists for large areas.
l Continue planting new
trees and shrubs.
l Dig up and store
remaining parsnips in dry

sand.
l Lift and divide established clumps of rhubarb
which need rejuvenating.
l Prune summer-flowering shrubs.
l Keep topping up bird
feeders and baths.
l Feed fruit trees with a
fertiliser high in nitrogen.
l Plant stored dahlia
tubers in pots of potting
compost in a frost-free
greenhouse to give them a
good start.
l Sow radishes and thin
them when they are big
enough to handle.
l Pot up lily bulbs now for
a summer show, but keep
them in a frost-free greenhouse at first.
l Sow seeds of busy
lizzies in a heated propagator.
l Prick out or pot up
pelargonium seedlings that
have grown from seeds
sown last month.
l Apply a top dressing
of gravel around rockery
plants to suppress weeds
and ensure free drainage.
l Sow seeds of tomatoes

for growing in a cool greenhouse.
l Bring strawberries in
containers into the greenhouse for early fruit.
l If you haven’t yet sown
peas, round seeded varieties such as Feltham First
or Meteor can be sown now
under cloches.
l Cultivate ground for an
annual border, so no time is
lost when conditions allow
sowing.
It is also time to check
your tools and machinery
are in good condition for
the coming season.

HARDY CYCLAMEN.

I’VE always found cyclamen quite difficult to grow
in pots, particularly if they
become waterlogged, their
leaves droop quickly and
don’t recover.
However, hardy cyclamen
can be more successful if
grown in moderately fertile,

They self-seed freely and
can form impressive colonies in time.
