hlulu Honolulu , on the island o Oahu, is the capital and largest city o the state o Hawaii. It is the center o government, government, transportation, and commerce or the state, and home to its  best known tourist destination, Waikiki Beach. understand Honolulu is a thriving city, with beaches that draw crowds rom around the world. The name Honolulu means “sheltered   bay” in Hawaiian, and its natural harbor catapulted this  IMG_9491r-v humble village on the (Correct caption to be inserted) southern shore o the island o Oahu to importance when, in 1809, 1809, King Kamehameha I moved his royal royal court rom the island o Hawaii Hawaii to Oahu. Its ideally located port made Honolulu a perect stop or merchant ships traveling between North America and Asia.

Eventually, in 1845, Kamehameha III ocially moved the kingdom’s kingdom’s capital rom Lahaina on Maui Maui to Honolulu. At the same time, descendants o missionaries mi ssionaries who arrived in the early 1800s established their headquarters in Honolulu, making it the center o business. The late 1800s and early early 1900s saw the overthrow o the Hawaiian monarchy, annexation by the United States, and an attack by the Japanese on nearby Pearl Harbor,  but Honolulu’s stature never wavered. Today, with nearly one million people in its metropolitan area (80% o the state’s population), Honolulu is the cultural, industrial, commercial, and governmental center o Hawaii, with Waikiki Waikiki Beach the epicenter o the tourist industry. industry. This is denitely not the place to go or a “get-away-rom-it-all” Hawaiian vacation. It is as ast-paced and dynamic as any city,

Honolulu International International Airport , oers requent requent local service to the other Hawaiian islands. It is quite a walk between terminals, so be sure to take the ree Wikiwiki Shuttle that runs every ew minutes. It’s easy to miss it so be sure to ask somebody where it is. The Airport Waikiki Express provides shuttle service to hotels in Waikiki every hal hour ($9/$15 one-way/round-trip). Cruise ships requently link Honolulu with the US mainland. navigating

Unlike other cities on the U.S. Mainland, Honolulu is not laid out in a strict compasspoint grid. Its street  Honolulu_-_NAS system conorms (Correct caption to be inserted) in large part to the shorelines, valleys, and ridges, with lots o twists and turns. It can be conusing conusing or or people used to straight grid systems. However However,, at the same time, it is not that dicult to navigate in, as long as you are amiliar with the major arterials and terminology below. below. Because it is dicult to dierentiate north and south on an island, directions are normally given given in terms o local landmarks. The most common terms that you will run into are mauka (MOWkah) meaning “toward the mountain” and makai (mah-KIE) meaning “toward “toward the sea”. In the case o Honolulu, Honolulu, which which is located on Oahu’s south shore, “mauka” is a rough north, and “makai” roughly roughly south. You will also hear Ewa Ewa (EH-vah) (EH-vah) and Diamond Head used a lot, in relation to downtown Honolulu, the ormer roughly means “west” (toward the town o Ewa on the southwest shore o Oahu) and the latter roughly means “east” (toward the amous landmark crater on the southeast shore).

Trac in Honolulu, and on Oahu in general, is a persistent problem. With almost one million people living living in a relatively relatively small space, and only a ew main routes serving the major populated areas on the island, a single trac incident has the potential to induce gridlock across the entire island. The likelihood o such trac jams is relatively low, but someone  visiting Oahu and traveling during a weekday should be aware o trac problems. Normal weekda weekday y rush rush hour in Honolulu Honolulu is 6 to 8 a.m. going inbound and 4 to 7 p.m. going outbound. Expect heavy trac on Interstates H-1 and H-2, Nimitz Highway/ Ala Moana Boulevard, and the surace streets in downtown Honolulu and Waikiki. Trac is less heavy during during the summer and over the holidays when the University o Hawaii at Manoa is is not in session. All in all though, driving on Oahu is pleasurable once you get o o the Interstates. Interst ates. Having a car on Oahu gives a  visitor a chance to visit vi sit the whole island in just a ew days. days. Once you get a little ways inland the trac is not too bad and in the agricutural areas, there is little trac. Unless you are amiliar with this climate, convertible tops should be up when the sun is intense, or you will soon burn to a crisp. Locals will look at you and shake their heads and warn you about this. Heed their advice. by bus
