Hospitality and Hotel Management
Hotel management is one of the largest business activities across the globe. It is important because good hotel management can give a boost to the local economy. However, the impact on the economy varies from country to country. Hotel Management becomes vital when a country wants to become a top tourist destination in the world. Most of the biggest hotel chains in the world have their corporate headquarters in the United States. There are more than a million hotels in the United States of America and almost seven million food service operations. The food service industry is the number one private employer in the United States. With the thriving food service and tourism industries, there are a lot of job opportunities available for someone who wants to excel in this field. With so much competition, hotels are looking to hire the graduates from a good degree program in hotel management course. Broadly, the industries of food service, hotels, tourism and travel are referred to as Hospitality Industry. So, most schools in the United States are named Hospitality Schools or Schools of Hotel and Restaurant Administration. The main objective of these schools is to train the students to become successful managers in either the lodging industry or the food service industry. Lodging industry includes all hotels, motels and resorts, while restaurants, bars, nightclubs and food service on cruise ships etc. come under the domain of food service industry. Certification Courses in Hotel Management: Case Example: School of Hotel Administration, Cornell University The Cornell’s University School of Hotel Administration was founded in 1922. It offered one of the first collegiate programs in Hotel Management and today Cornell graduates are considered as industry leaders. The talented students are taught by sixty full-time experienced faculty members. Besides the stateof-the-art classrooms, trainings are also held in the on-campus Statler Hotel and in different settings around the globe. There are four basic courses offered by the School of Hotel Administration; a Bachelor of Science in Hotel Administration, Master of Management in Hospitality Degree (MMH) & MS and PhD Degrees in Hotel Administration. However, the focus of this part is on the certificate courses available to improve one’s qualification.

There are many industry professionals who want to improve their skills and qualification, but do not have time for a 3 to 5 year full-time degree. It is for these people that short certification courses have been designed. Each certification program consists of four courses with a specialty focus. Depending on the time available to the student, a certification may take one to four years for completion. I) Certification in Financial Management of Hotels:This certification is useful for both managers with no experience in finance management and managers with no experience in hotel financial management. The courses are a blend of finance and accounting topics that will enable the students to interpret financial data and assess it to make important business decisions.
