Hotel Management and Hospitality.

With the enormous pace of growth and large portions of Indian markets untapped , the Hospitality Industry turns out to be a much promising career option.

Skills Required.


A basic qualification of 10+2 in any stream of at +2 level (Science background preferred).

 Excellent communication skills in English and at least two more any other languages. (Indian native languages or foreign languages)  General Awareness about current affairs.  Basically , to pursue this course an average academic background is sufficient , but needs to show more interest on psychological aspects like respect to guests , communication skills , friendly attitude , ability to mingle with people easily etc. So the +2 background doesn't really weigh much of significance.

What after +2?
The most sought after college for pursuing a bachelor's degree in Hotel Management is 'Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition' (IHM) which has 24 campuses all around India with over 7000 seats. As for Andhra Pradesh, It has a campus at Hyderabad with 240 seats. The seats for the college are filled through JEE (Joint Entrance exam) (Not to be confused with IIT-JEE, this is a separate exam), which also enables to take up the course at various other

Government aided Hospitality colleges and Food Craft Institutes for B.Sc in Hotel Management.

JEE comprises of 200 questions in 5 sections as follows
    

Reasoning and Logical Deduction English language Service Sector aptitude Quantitative Aptitude General Knowledge

Please note that English language accounts to 40% of the questions and the exam is held mostly in last week of April.  The difficulty level of exam is just moderate and can be done away with a minimal preparation, provided you are good at technical English.


As for the IHMs , the most prominent ones are the IHMs of Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, New Delhi. Besides IHM's , other top Hotel Management institutes are :

Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development – Delhi. SRM University - Chennai. Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration (WGSHA) – Manipal Christ College - Bengaluru. Merit Swiss Asian School of Hotel Management - Ooty. * These colleges have their own process of criteria and selection.

 

Courses covered in Bachelor's degree :
Accounting; Communication; Hotel Maintenance; Nutrition; Food Science; Computers; Law; Marketing Management; Principles of Management; Financial Management; Facility Planning; Business Policy; Managerial Economics and Project Work ( Industrial exposure of minimum 20 weeks at any Hotel or Hospitality desk during the 3 year course ).

What after Bachelor's degree?


Students can look forward to get placed in the position of management trainee or Corporate trainee in Star Hotels and Hospitality wing of any reputed Corporate company. Going by IHM statistics, the starting pay for trainee would be 12,000 - 25,000 per month with 90% getting successfully placed. PG Diploma courses are offered by the same institutes mentioned above in various specializations. There are plenty of opportunities to take up job or to do Master's degree abroad, especially in UK.





 Can also take up MBA in HR or Operations stream upon completion of bachelor's degree.

Star Hotels like Oberois , Taj group Hotels , ITC Welcome group, Leela ventures, Marriot International, Starwood Hotel Group etc.

 Catering wings of Corporate companies like HSBC, Dell Computers, GE, Deloitte etc.  Airline majors like Kingfisher, Jet Airways, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa, SpiceJet for the posts like Cabin crew, Air Hostess, Flight steward etc. With many Business and Technology Processing Units coming up across the country as a part of corporate expansion plans, it would certainly boost the Service sector growth, right from positions in front office desks to Director of Operations at a MNC group.
