HOW TEACHERS CAN BE DIFFERENT?
Dr.T.V.Rao MD
Today teaching professionals are in more demand than in the past, for many good and bad
reasons teachers are venerable for criticism from students and parents when we are
indifferent to our work and not dedicated and do the things mechanically. If we look back to
our younger years we are more influenced by the teachers in the primary and secondary
schools than in our colleges, and universities, the higher education is more mechanical than
ever before, in this process many teachers become more interested in competition of tasks
than teaching with passion, the reasons many be, we are in market economy and
commercialization of education, many of our student’s join the colleges to attain the
degrees, There is no better way to do it? However we can make difference. When you are a
teacher for some time, you end up by understanding people better. Not only your students.
You acquire some kind of ability to get through to people and understand them most of the
time. You get to people and somehow manage to be a better person if you analyse the facts
very few student’s practice what they have read and qualified, leading to gaps in Student
and teacher relationships, Teaching is like making friends. Or trying to. There is no better
way to do it. You acquire some kind of ability to get through to people and understand them
most of the time. It is not a question of having the same interest or the same view of life in
general. It is much more. You get to people and somehow manage to be a better person.
Many student’s coming from working classes and poor backgrounds are really willing to use
the time for future survival in the system we know that poverty has an impact on learning,
and providing our helping hand is just the start. Teachers also make connections with their
students. Even those students who come from seemingly problem-free lives too need their
teachers. They need to belong and to be loved. Each student needs to know he or she is
important and that he or she has something to contribute. I'm not talking about falsely
nurturing self-esteem but rather showing student’s that they all have unique strengths and
talents and that each student, no matter his strengths or talents, has value. We model
students how to treat others. The student’s respect the way we treat them, as Today, we
have teachers in the system who are authoritative rather than with strengths in the
subjects, the student’s too soon adopt to their behaviours and never forget they forget
them sooner than later. As Medical teacher I always believe they are our future colleagues
the system depends on them in future and we get reruns, the way we treat them I keep in
touch with many of my former students via Facebook, all the way back to the class of 2004.
They remind me why I do what I do, and why I love because of passion for teaching. They
remind me that — even when times get tough like when my students do not do well in
Microbiology, which I was teaching for few decades, something and I have to go rethink my
instruction, my former students remind me that I make a difference. They remind me there
is much more to education than a test that 30 years later doesn't mean much, that
education is also about the day-to-day small things that change lives. So please, teachers,
remember that you, too, make a difference. In the end, that's what really counts. Changing
the life of another person is an incredible feeling and it is completely within our grasp. In
any case, helping others brings happiness and prosperity into our own life, so for whatever
reason we chose to help others, it will always help you in return. If I think deeply I may be
selfish to have my impact on the system. The law of karma says that whatever you do, you
will get back many fold, helping others is therefore a selfish act, but still a good act, one that
you should do without fear, with love and with the knowledge that you will one day be
rewarded. Do not know if this is correct, but I do know the feeling I get when I help
someone and see that I make a difference; something happens, I get a sense of fulfilment,
happiness and I feel a sense of purpose, a surge of Joy in my life.
