Where can I find the “green” dry cleaners in Pasadena? 10/23/09-rev 3 Examiner.com submitted on: Emailed article to: [email protected] Jack "Van", the owner of Jack's Dry Cleaners, is the second generation of his family to run a dry cleaners. His father started the business in Pasadena in 1977 and has since passed it on to his son. Although Jack has been in the dry cleaning industry for many years, he recently became a green dry cleaner in 2007. He decided to change his company into an environmentally friendly business as more and more customers started asking about green dry cleaning services. He could see that people were getting more involved with environmental concerns and, as he put it, "I want to go for the future of dry cleaning." Jack said that at first the recession did affect his business, but with the change to green dry cleaning services finds that he is attracting more business. His business is environmentally friendly because he uses the wet cleaning process, which is a water based solution with conditioners; no toxic chemicals are involved in the cleaning process. He also buys polybags and hangers that are recyclable. Green dry cleaning is more expensive than traditional dry cleaning because the conditioners they use cost more than the chemicals used in traditional dry cleaning. Jack's Cleaners, located at 2465 E Washington Blvd, Pasadena, CA, (626) 797-7323, also offers alterations and shoe repair, as well as their green dry cleaning services. For their customer’s convenience they offer same-day service. Their hours are: Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and they’re closed on Sunday. A green dry cleaner is one that is either using the wet cleaning process or using the carbon dioxide cleaning process. According to an article in The Daily Green "the carbon dioxide cleaning process uses CO2 which is put under high pressure to convert it into a liquid. As a liquid, it acts as a carrier of biodegradable soaps in much the same way as water does in a washing machine. Once the cycle is done, it turns back into a gas and is mostly reused." Some dry cleaners claim to be environmentally friendly, although they use PERC (a petroleum based product), but since the EPA hasn't set standards for this industry any dry cleaner can claim to be green. According to a report by Occupational Safety and Health Administration perchloroethylene (known as PERC) has been known to “cause the following health hazards to workers: dizziness, drowsiness, and loss of coordination; mild loss of memory, visual perception, and reaction time after several years of exposure; or redness and blistering of the skin after prolonged dermal contact. There is some evidence of an association between PERC and increased risk of certain cancers in dry cleaning workers exposed for many years.”

Another green dry cleaner in Pasadena is Eco-Clean Dry Cleaners, at 2708 Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, 626-844-9382. They use the wet cleaning process and also do alterations. Other nearby green dry cleaners are The Cleaning Store, 1225 Pacific Ave., Glendale, CA 91202, 818-507-8834 and Halvorsen's, 701 Mission St., South Pasadena, CA 91030, 626-799-1510. The Environmental Protection Agency has a 10 page list (organized by state) of green drycleaners that use the two environmentally responsible methods, wet cleaning and CO2 cleaning. This list hasn't been updated since July 2001. The No Dry Clean website maintains a more current list that you can search by address, state or zip code. -561 Internal links The Daily Green www.thedailygreen.com A report by Occupational Safety and Health Administration on PERC www.osha.gov/dsg/guidance/perc.html Environmental Protection Agency www.epa.gov/dfe/pubs/garment/gcrg/cleanguide.pdf No Dry Clean http://nodryclean.com/map/state.html External Links Dry-Clean Green www.thedailygreen.com/going-green/tips/735 Are there green dry cleaners? www.treehugger.com/files/2007/09/are_there_green.php Picture Caption- Jack’s Cleaners poster Photograph by Diane Tegarden
