Andrew McCauley: So, you!re about to publish a new blog post. &hat do you do rom here' This episode is going to show you what you need to do to get tra ic to your site. MC: Have you picked up our online survival guide yet' (et prepped or the uture o online marketing by going to www.aybguide.com. Andrew McCauley: Hey everybody) This is Andrew *c+auley. &elcome to #odcast ,-- . -- o our Auto#ilot $our %usiness #odcast. /t is an e"citing day. &e are e"cited to be with you once again, talking about tra ic again. &e can never talk about enough tra ic. %ut, speci ically, what do you need to do once you!ve published a blog post' &e!ve given you a whole bunch o ideas about what you can talk about, what you can put in your blog post . all the sorts o things that you want to look or when it!s up and running. %ut when it is actually done and said and you!ve actually hit that #ublish button, you can!t 0ust leave it there. $ou!ve got to do something with it. And, to talk about that, o course, all the way rom sunny Sydney, and /!m guessing she!s wearing something blue today, Heather #orter) Heather Porter: *y goodness. How would you ever know that, Andrew' Hi and hello everybody. &elcome back. &ell, okay. So, Andrew has a blue comment. / have to tell him because it!s 1uite unny. &e 0ust started something today called *ake /t Simple T2 and we!re inviting our sort o inner circle o contacts rom all over the world to hang out with us on (oogle Hangouts. And, the unniest thing, our irst ever episode is Andrew and me and another ama3ing woman, 4laine 5indsay, on (oogle6 talking about (oogle6 and all three o us were wearing the same e"act shade o blue. Andrew McCauley: /!m glad you said shade o something because / thought, i you were going to say we were wearing the same dress, /!d be a little bit concerned. Heather Porter: Shade) Shade o blue, and it was 1uite unny. So, yeah, that!s how he knows /!m wearing blue. Andrew McCauley: How are you' &hat!s going on' Heather Porter: / am good. /!m good. / eel like /!m a content creating machine today. &hat about you' Andrew McCauley: / think /!ve been like that or two weeks. / actually went home the other night and / had to sit down and 0ust look at a blank wall because my head was spinning because / was 0ust pumping out so much content and / think that!s the way the uture is right now. &e!re punching out content. %ut, you know, we!re big on repurposing so / think a lot o my brain power!s going to how do / repurpose what

we!ve already done, you know, because that!s a big part o it . not 0ust repurposing it or repurposing!s sake but making sure it!s valuable content as well. Heather Porter: 2aluable and can really give people good results, you know' So, yeah, /!ve been doing the same. /t!s good. /t!s good. So, tell me, Andrew, what have you learned over the last week' Andrew McCauley: &ow. /!ll tell you what / did learn, actually, because, / mean, it!s coming out very recently and that!s a new type o 7acebook ad. /t!s called &ebsite +ustom Audiences. So, essentially, what it is is that now, when people visit your website, you can put some tracking directly into 7acebook, but it also lets you track custom audiences. So, it inds people who are 0ust like you and inds custom audiences or it so that, when you!re on a 7acebook, you see some ads popping up o sites you!ve been to or your riends have been to as well. #retty cool and power ul . /!m not going to get into it too much too technically. %ut, 0ust know that, when you start seeing ads pop up and you!re thinking, 8Hey, /!ve been to that website be ore,9 it!s probably right. They probably tracked you and they!re putting ads in ront o your 7acebook space. Heather Porter: So, as an e"ample or that, like, there!s a website here in Australia called theiconic.com.au which is like a big retail sort o clothing site and / will literally be shopping on that site and then / have that website now popping up in 7acebook. /s it that sort o thing' Andrew McCauley: $eah, it!s very similar. /t!s very similar to retargeting / think they call it out there. %ut, what the big change is is that, when you wanted to do retargeting ads on 7acebook, you used to have to go through a third:party to make that happen. %ut, now, you can do it without that third:party integration . you can do it yoursel . So, you can retarget, everyone can retarget now without even having to go through some agency. Heather Porter: %ased on i people come to your website or certain pages on your site, then you can have your ads pop up' ;kay, got it. That!s really cool. Andrew McCauley: $ep, e"actly. So, you know, you can run in the news eed o the site. So, it!s pretty cool. Heather Porter: <ice. Andrew McCauley: $es. <ow, what about you' &hat!d you learn this week' Heather Porter: &ell, it!s all back to our (oogle6 Hangout e"perience and that is that, recently, (oogle has allowed you to schedule Hangouts in the uture. So, you literally can go in, enter your (oogle6 account, and set up a Hangout to be on air, and schedule it or a date and a time, and what!s cool about it is it gives you three U=5s or three links . one is to the $ouTube page it!s going to be on; one is an embed code that you can stick on a web page o your choice; and one is the link to the actual (oogle6 Hangout event page. So, this means that you can now set up

Hangouts and promote them, way in advance and very easily, because some people are still kind o skeptical about (oogle6 and even how to get into a Hangout that the beauty o having this embed code means that you can 0ust send people into a web page on your website, like what we did today, and people can watch you live rom directly in your website or, you know, 7acebook or anything with these links. So, really cool and, i you actually want to see, you know, how we put this to use, you can pop on over to makeitsimple.tv . this is our newest online video T2 show which we!re using (oogle Hangouts or this and our irst episode was all about (oogle6 and how to use it in your business. Andrew McCauley: $es, makeitsimple.tv. Heather Porter: $ou!ve got it. Andrew McCauley: Awesome. So, today, we!re talking about tra ic . speci ically, what to do a ter a blog post is published . and there!s a couple o key things that we want to sort o touch on 0ust to give you an idea o are you doing these and you probably are doing a lot o them but there are some you may not be doing and it!s always a good re resher to go through and say, 8&ell, hey, you know what' / didn!t know about that but /!d sort o orgotten,9 so this episode is all about reminding you some o the things that you want to do once you publish your content. Heather Porter: $eah, because / think a lot o people, they!ll 0ust hit publish and then they e"pect people to 0ust start talking about it. Andrew McCauley: $ep, e"actly. Heather Porter: So, these are the tips, little nuances that you need to start doing when you!re doing your blog post each time to make sure that, you know, people actually know about your blog post to come and read it in the irst place. Andrew McCauley: $eah, yeah, yeah, absolutely. All right. So, let!s kick it o start with number one. and

Heather Porter: The very irst thing . and we!ve talked about this be ore . is using social share buttons. So, you want to have your social media share buttons on your blog post. There!s plug:ins that you can get and a lot o &ord#ress themes even come with these built:in nowadays. <ow, the way / use them is /!ll actually publish my blog post and then /, mysel , use those share buttons. So, /!ll go in and click on, you know, one o them or 7acebook or StumbleUpon or #interest or whatever there is as a starting point because it!s a really 1uick and easy way. As soon as you hit #ublish, o course, you go over to the page to make sure it published correctly and then you!re staring at these social share buttons so you might as well use them. Andrew McCauley: $ou know, these social share buttons are usually like a plug:in that come along with, well, they!re a plug:in, and you can choose a whole range o

di erent plug:ins. Some o them / know have about -> di erent buttons on them, right' Don!t they' Heather Porter: $eah, there!s loads, there!s loads. %ut then basic ones you always want to do are 5inked/n, Twitter, 7acebook, #interest, and some people do one o the Digg or StumbleUpon types o sites. Andrew McCauley: $ep. $ou know, these are di erent, these are not your social buttons where people click on there and go to your 7acebook page. These are buttons that lets them share on their walls and their news eeds the item that they!re reading at the time. So, 0ust make sure there!s a distinction. / you see two lots o 7acebook buttons on someone!s page, they!re not the same thing. Usually, the buttons up the top or the bottom o a page takes you to that person!s own pro ile whereas these share buttons let you share the content on your own wall that they!re talking about. Heather Porter: $eah. So, you 0ust make sure you have these, make sure they!re on your site, and make sure even you yoursel are using them to, you know, get the ball rolling, so to speak. Andrew McCauley: $eah, de initely, de initely. That!s social share buttons, right' /s there anything else you wanted to add about that one' Heather Porter: <o. <o, that!s it, / guess. &ell, since we!re on the topic o social, / suppose we should 0ust 1uickly say, socially, the key thing here is that you!ve got to be sharing your site on all o your social media plat orms, or / should say your blog post, and there!s a couple o tips around that. &ith, by de ault, i you!re sharing your site by clicking on these icons, it will come up with 0ust the kind o de ault te"t that!s in there and maybe one o your images that you!ve put in there. So, what / like to use is . actually, /!m not going to go into how to set it up but . it!s called &ord#ress S4; by $oast. /t!s a plug:in; we!ve talked about it a lot be ore. There!s actually, inside o your blog . the little &ord#ress S4; bo" sits down below where you create your blog post . there!s a little tab that says Social and you can then put in a description and even an image that, i anybody shares your page on social media, it!s going to automatically pull through that in ormation. So, you!re actually telling the plat orm what image and what string o te"t you want to display by de ault across social media. So, / would do that and make that really appealing. And then, also, when you!re sharing a blog post, put in a comment about it, you know, that!s not 0ust what!s there. / you!re sharing your own blog post, what!s the 8why9 behind why you created it. Actually, kind o announce it and give a little bit o a story about, you know, 8/ 0ust discovered this unbelievable time:saving tool that shaved ?>> hours o my team!s work and you!ve got to check this out.9 So, be personable when you!re sharing it on your social media. Andrew McCauley: $eah. $eah, good point. ;kay, great. Heather Porter: <ow, the ne"t one is there is a really cool thing in 7acebook called <etworked %logs and, look, what it is is basically a blog directory in 7acebook and you

Listen to the podcast here: http://autopilotyourbusiness.com/podcasts/getting-traffic-to-your-blog/ Get a copy of our Online Survival Guide here: http://aybguide.com www.autopilotyourbusiness.com

can go ahead and list your blog in there and people can come and discover blogs, but you can also get an app where you sit this in your 7acebook page and, / guess . lack o a better way o e"plaining it . i you go to somebody!s 7acebook page and you see one o those little bo"es under the cover photo that says %log or 5atest #ost, it!s probably using <etwork %logs because it!s actually pulling through their latest post right there inside o their business page. Andrew McCauley: $eah, and it also sticks the latest post as a status update on their news eed, too. So, when you!ve hit that #ublish button . i you!ve set this up correctly in the irst place . it automatically comes along and sticks it on your news eed so that people get to see that you!ve actually written new posts. They can click through straight back to your website to read the article or the post that you!ve 0ust created. So, it!s a cool little eature i you want to get it out to people on your 7acebook timeline without having to go and click on the Share buttons yoursel . Heather Porter: And 0ust allows people to discover your blog within the social environment. So, <etworked %logs, 0ust (oogle that and it!ll take you into the website and there!s a little button in there that says Add to *y 7acebook #age and there!s also a place to list your blog inside o the directory. Andrew McCauley: $es, de initely. So, <etworked %logs is a good one. /t!s been around a while. /!m not sure. / know people still use it; / still use it or mine and / get some tra ic rom it. So, you know, it!s worth having a look at i you don!t want to be sharing it yoursel . Heather Porter: $eah, good point. And what!s the ne"t one' Andrew McCauley: &ell, the ne"t one is StumbleUpon and Digg. <ow, we spoke about these social bookmarking sites, we!ve touched on these earlier. There!s a number o them. There!s StumbleUpon, there!s Digg, what!s the other one /!m trying to think o ' /!m stuck at the minute. Heather Porter: Delicious' Andrew McCauley: Delicious, there!s =eddit . a number o these ones are out there that lets you go and basically . Tumblr is the other one / should think o , thank you. Heather Porter: The big one. Andrew McCauley: $eah, the big one. 5ets you go and put your post out on these sites. <ow, a lot o people use these sites as news curation sites. They go and check out what!s going on and we!re getting some tra ic rom all o those ones when we put it out there on those sites, too. So, basically, it!s people looking or in ormation. / you!ve got your keywords and all o that sort o stu set up properly through your $oast plug:in then you!re going to ind that people are searching or this in ormation on all sorts o plat orms and these are great places or you to go and add your blog post to so that people can ind it. And then, ultimately, come back to your site and look at the rest o your site as well.

So, StumbleUpon, Digg, =eddit, Tumblr, and Delicious is the other one . they!re the top si", generally. Heather Porter: And you know what we do is, like, the second we hit publish, we!ll take the U=5 o the blog post and then go into our StumbleUpon account. 5ike, you can set all these up or ree and then you go into your account and then you paste the U=5 o your blog and then you put, like, some tags or keywords and a little bit o in ormation. And, in StumbleUpon!s case, you click the StumbleUpon button and then it!s posted into this directory. So, kind o get in the habit o , when you hit #ublish, irst you do the social sharing o your own blog post . you!re sharing it on your di erent social accounts . and then go ahead and do one or two or even three or our o these where you!re sharing the U=5 on the bookmarking sites. Andrew McCauley: $eah. $ou know, / think there are some tools out that automate all o this. &e!re sort o tending to shy away rom automation tools lately because a lot o these sites are catching on that, you know, they!re becoming spam:receptacles . i that!s the right word. There!s a whole bunch o spam ending up on these sites so they!re really saying, 8$ou know what' &e don!t like these automation tools. / we see that you!ve come rom an automation tool, we may not give it as much 0uice as you should.9 So, we like to do these manually. /t!s a little bit more time:consuming but we!re getting better results or it though. Heather Porter: $eah, / agree because, right now, it!s all about personality and culture and bringing out who you are with all o your posts and it!s hard to do that with automation when each site sort o has a di erent lavor to it so you want to make sure and talk in a way that that site would respect and appreciate it. Andrew McCauley: Absolutely. Heather Porter: ;r / should say that site!s ollowers. Andrew McCauley: $es, yes. Heather Porter: <ow, the ne"t one is to put your blog inside blog directories and, to give you an e"ample o one, there!s one that called Technorati and it!s, like, T:4:+: H:<:;:=:A:T:/.com. /!ve actually listed all my blogs in there. &e have ours . our A$% one in there . and we get tra ic rom that as well. /t!s 0ust kind o an interesting directory where they break it down by industry and topic, and you can search by topic o post or you can search by topic o blog, and you can get some good tra ic rom there. So, there!s other blog directories out there as well. / you 0ust sort o go into (oogle and type in 8top ?> blog directories.9 All you have to do is list your blog and then, sometimes, there!s a little bit o a veri ication process that can take a ew days, but you want to do that because then you!re now the owner o the blog and you!re reaping the rewards o the tra ic. Andrew McCauley: $eah, Technorati.com.

Heather Porter: $ou got it. $ou got it. Andrew McCauley: Awesome. $ou know, a couple o things / want to bring up is, in your blog post, you want to start putting some calls to action as well. 5ike, what do you want people to do when they!ve read your blog post' $ou know, ask them to share it with others, ask them to comment on it, ask them a 1uestion at the end. $ou know, 8Do you agree with this sentiment'9 or 8Do you agree with the content that we were talking about'9 or 8&hat!s your opinion o this'9 so that you want to get people to actually take action. So, putting a good call to action at the end o your post is a good way to start getting that engagement actor built up as well. So, make sure your post . be ore you hit #ublish . has got something or them to do. +all to action, what do you want them to do' Share it, post, comment, like, discuss, agree, disagree sort o thing. So, put a +TA or a call to action at the end o it. Heather Porter: And, i you use a good little plug:in called Dis1us . dis1us.com. /t!s a ree little thing and you can stick that in and it will actually become your commenting system, and by having people comment using this plat orm, it!s sort o a global community o commenting and top commenters are, actually, people will click into their pro ile and go o to the di erent blogs that they are commenting on i they!re giving good, valid in ormation across di erent blogs. So, tapping into a big network like Dis1us as your commenting system is going to help you even that much more when you!re saying to people, 8#lease comment below.9 Andrew McCauley: $eah, yeah. <ow, speaking o commenting, one o the things that you do want to do is make sure you!re looking at your comments. / people are commenting on your blog, then you want to make sure that you!re also commenting or answering those particular comments as well. So, you don!t want to be a ghost town o one:way comments. $ou want to make sure that you!re responding to people!s comments as well. So, get on and answer those comments that people are making on your blog. %ut, also, go and comment on other people!s blogs, too. Heather Porter: 2ery important, yeah, because you!re sharing the love and, as we know, there!s loads o people that consume content but not a lot that actually engage with it . there!s a very small percentage o people that actually leave a comment. So, by sort o patting other people!s backs and leaving comments on their blogs, they hope ully will come over to yours and do the same, and /!ve e"perienced that. /!ve gone o to comment and then /!ll notice that that blog owner will come over to me and do the same thing. Andrew McCauley: $eah, yeah, yeah. ;kay. So, that!s commenting. Anything else you want to mention about commenting' Heather Porter: / think the key thing here is make sure that, in your website, i you use &ord#ress or whatever you use, make sure that your email address is attached

Listen to the podcast here: http://autopilotyourbusiness.com/podcasts/getting-traffic-to-your-blog/ Get a copy of our Online Survival Guide here: http://aybguide.com www.autopilotyourbusiness.com

to the commenting system so you!re alerted when new comments come in because, i your web designer!s getting them or an old outsource company that set up your website has their email in as the admin email, you will never even be alerted i you!re getting comments. So, make sure that you do have your contact details in there and, &ord#ress, it pulls rom the main admin email, that!s what it sends the comment alerts to so make sure that!s you. Andrew McCauley: All right. &ell, / think that was a pretty good little list o things or people to go and do. Heather Porter: There!s one more. Andrew McCauley: ;ne more' Heather Porter: There!s one more power ul one, actually, yeah, and / wanted to share that there!s something called (oogle Alerts and, to set these up, you 0ust go to google.com@alerts and what this is is basically you are going to be emailed whenever someone talks about a keyword, a U=5, a website o your choice that you put into the alert bo". So, what you can do is you can take the U=5 o your blog post that you!ve 0ust hit #ublish on, go into (oogle Alerts, paste it in, say to the system, 84mail me any time anybody talks about this particular U=5,9 so it allows you to monitor what else is happening o your site in the, you know, /nternet sphere. So, i there!s ping backs or people using your blog post on their post or commenting on it over here or whatever, this is the easiest way to ind out where your blog is actually being discussed. &hy is that important' %ecause then you can go into that person!s site and you can thank them or sharing it or i it!s a bad comment or i it!s a bad review o some sort, you can go to that person and be proactive with your customer service. So, even i you don!t do this or your blog posts, de initely do it or your brand. So, 0ust go set up an alert or your name or your business name and you!ll be surprised on what!s coming up about you online. Andrew McCauley: (oogle sends it to you in an email, right' Heather Porter: $eah, you can do it, you can set it as it happens. So, as (oogle inde"es it, it!ll send you an email, or you can set it up as like a daily digest or / think it!s also weekly when you can get sort o a summary. Andrew McCauley: $eah. So, i you!ve got a lot o comments or a lot o eedback coming rom those keywords, or your name, or your brand, or your product, or service then you may not want it as it happens because that!ll be a lot o emails coming through. %ut you may want to do it as a digest which you 0ust said which is a great tool. /t!s ree. / use it a air bit and /!m sure you use it, too. So, (oogle Alerts, do a search or (oogle Alerts. $ou!ll ind it. / think that!s a pretty good wrap or our little episode ,--. / you haven!t done any o these or you need to get back and do some o these, go and check out some o the resources that we!ve spoken about.
