INTRODUCTION TO MASSAGE

Massage is one of the oldest healing arts: Chinese records dating back 3,000 years document its use; the ancient Hindus, Persians and Egyptians applied forms of massage for many ailments; and Hippocrates wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for joint and circulatory problems. Today, the benefits of massage are varied and far-reaching. As an accepted part of many physical rehabilitation programs, massage therapy has also proven beneficial for many chronic conditions, including low back pain, arthritis, bursitis, fatigue, high blood pressure, diabetes, immunity suppression, infertility, smoking cessation, depression, and more. And, as many millions will attest, massage also helps relieve the stress and tension of everyday living that can lead to disease and illness. So What Is It Exactly? Massage, bodywork and somatic therapies are defined as the application of various techniques to the muscular structure and soft tissues of the human body. Specifically: Massage: The application of soft-tissue manipulation techniques to the body, generally intended to reduce stress and fatigue while improving circulation. The many variations of massage account for several different techniques. Bodywork: Various forms of touch therapies that may use manipulation, movement, and/or repatterning to affect structural changes to the body. Somatic: Meaning “of the body.” Many times this term is used to denote a body/mind or whole-body approach as distinguished from a physiology-only or environmental perspective. There are more than 250 variations of massage, bodywork, and somatic therapies and many practitioners utilize multiple techniques. The application of these techniques may include, but is not limited to, stroking, kneading, tapping, compression, vibration, rocking, friction, and pressure to the muscular structure or soft tissues of the human body. This may also include non-forceful passive or active movement and/or application of techniques intended to affect the energetic systems of the body. The use of oils, lotions, and powders may also be included to reduce friction on the skin. Click here for more information on what to expect. Please note: Massage, bodywork and somatic therapies specifically exclude diagnosis, prescription, manipulation or adjustments of the human skeletal structure, or any other service, procedure or therapy which requires a license to practice orthopedics, physical therapy, podiatry, chiropractic, osteopathy, psychotherapy, acupuncture, or any other profession or branch of medicine. Will My Insurance Cover It? The services of a bodywork professional may be covered by health insurance when prescribed by a chiropractor or osteopath. Therapies provided as part of a prescribed treatment by a physician or registered physical therapist are often covered.

An international leader in the field in the massage therapy training industry. Our powerful and innovative style of massage therapy can be learned in very short intensive hands on massage courses held all over the world

Brandon Raynor, Raynor Massage Founder and School Principal

As an international massage therapy training & school, we operate in 8 countries (Australia, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, the United States, South Africa, Mauritius & Ireland), and provide industry acclaimed cutting edge massage training in our intensive learning method of one and two week full time practical, hands on massage courses. Brandon Raynor's School of Massage and Natural Therapies massage style is based on Eastern medical principles of the connection between the mind, the body and the spirit. To understand our massage style better please look at these articles. What is Chi and the Body as Elements and What is Raynor massage.

Due to the high demand for Raynor Massage and for intensive and high quality massage training, our massage school has rapidly grown and expanded since 1999 from its humble origins as a small massage school in Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia, to become one of the world's leading international massage & natural therapies school.

Keeping with our roots in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney we have now opened a full time clinic and school at 45 Oxford St, Bondi Junction, Sydney, Australia and a permanent branch of our school at 181 High St in Northcote, Melbourne, Australia while still conducting massage courses in many locations worldwide including but not limited to: London, Dublin, Edinburgh, Cape Town, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Hawaii, Vermont, Wyoming, Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Gold Coast, and Darwin.

We also have a permanent retreat centre for our massage courses and our Naturopathy classes on the west Coast of Oahu in Hawaii. We have a beautiful 2 acre property, on a mountain, beside the ocean and are investing a lot of time and money in developing it so that in a few years we will be able to conduct our courses in this idyllic location, feeding the course participants freshly grown food including tropical fruits of all varieties, all grown on the rich volcanic soil of the land.

Student Testimonial

Hello Brandon, I just had to write you and thank you. Thank you in the biggest way possible, that perhaps words cannot express in the manner that I wish. Thank you for developing a massage that embodies all practices and in such an intuitive method. I have just met a local angel who gives massages as trained by you (and

Terry). [ more ... ]

Our unique and cutting edge style of massage Brandon Raynor massage has taken the most powerful techniques from massage styles all over the world and from different traditions and developed them into this unique style of massage.

"...Raynor massage has the goal of finding every tight muscle in the body and loosening it, and unblocking the flow of chi in the body, and uses massage and natural healing techniques from across the world to achieve that goal."

We have drawn techniques from many styles of massage such as • Therapeutic Massage • Remedial Massage • Deep Tissue Massage • Reflexology

• Shiatsu Massage • Lomi Lomi (Hawaiian Massage) • Tuin Na • Acupressure • Thai Massage • Swedish Massage We have figured out that the rough goal of all good styles of massage is to find any muscle tension that is chronically existing, even when the person is relaxed, and to get rid of it. Along with this all the Eastern styles of massage have as their goal the development of sensitivity to the flow of the chi, or life force, through the body and to open up the various channels through which it flows and remove any blockages. We have taken these two simple goals, finding any muscle tension and getting rid of it and finding any blockages in the chi flow in the body and designed our massage around that. We have taken any technique that aids us in this goal from any other style of massage and discarded any technique or philosophy or "required learning" that confuses us or distracts us from this goal. Where we didnt have a technique from a previous style of massage to help us with a particular problem we have developed the technique to achieve our particular goal.

In this way, we have developed a very powerful and focused style of massage and also a very powerful and focused form of teaching massage. This is why we are able to teach this cutting edge, world's best practice form of massage therapy in such short intensive courses. It is because we don't sidetrack you with unnecessary knowledge and we always keep focused on our goal of getting the tension out of people and unblocking them.

The rest of the course is spent either massaging, being massaged or watching the teacher demonstration and talk through a Raynor bodywork treatment. Many people can't believe how good they feel just from the receiving massage aspect of this course especially if they have volunteered for a demonstration treatment from one of our teachers.

How the Brandon Raynor Massage School has grown into one of the biggest and best worldwide schools. We have been teaching massage in Australia since 1997 and worldwide since 2002. Today, as well as teaching in all major cities of Australia we have expanded into major cities of Canada, the US, England, Ireland, Germany, South Africa, and New Zealand. For more information please see the articles what is Raynor massage, What is Chi and the Body as Elements by Brandon Raynor. This shows the success of what started as an Australian local family business! The reason that we have been this successful is not just fantastic massage but also excellent customer satisfaction. Our school has survived and prospered because of its happy customers. People who have chosen to learn massage from our school have gone on to open successful businesses all over the world and go on to refer other interested people back to our school.

As well as the conventional areas that most massage therapists deal with such as the back, the legs and the arms, our therapy style goes extensively into massaging parts of the body such as the feet, the hands, the face, the front of the legs, the abdomen and the chest. We also show you how the various Oriental meridian systems connects the various parts of the body. This means that by working an acupressure point on the foot this could then have a reflex action on another area of the body. Following the meridians or bands of tension in the body will help relax another area of the body.

Another unique aspect of Raynor massage, which has made it so popular, is the ability to relieve deep seated emotional conditions that many people hold in their body. This idea that emotional blockages can be stored in the body is a fundamental concept in both Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine, the traditional medicine of India. It is also well recognized in the folklore of Western society by the common expressions such as "it gave me knots in my stomach", "my stomach twisted". There is an increased awareness of how stress can cause headaches, indigestion, insomnia, ulcers and a whole host of other problems. The concept of mind - body medicine is at the forefront of current inquiries in Western medicine. Our technique of massage brings this extremely important and powerful field of medicine to the general public and allows practitioners to help friends, family and the general community. Instead of teaching exactly how he had been taught massage by first learning lots of anatomy and physiology and then learning first a basic Swedish massage routine followed by completing a Shiatsu course at another college and then doing further study elsewhere, Brandon and his teachers teach the style of treatment exactly as they do it now. Brandon wasn't going to teach anything that he wasn't currently using in his practice believing that if he didn't remember and use a technique or a term then it obviously wasn't useful and he wasn't going to teach his students that. From the first day of his course he is teaching hands on techniques and acupressure points and doing so in a down to earth and simple way. He didn't use complex terminology to describe the body or even to describe acupressure points. Instead he would just show people how to massage the body and how different areas of the body connect. He and his teachers show how one point affects another and people experience at first hand the effectiveness of the treatment and learn to do it themselves. He runs all of his training courses as experiential learning workshops. In this way people also see the healing process

evolve in themselves and the other course participants.

Our courses are open to people between the ages of 16 to 75 and there are no prerequisites to do our course, just a desire to learn and a desire to help others through massage. Our courses can involve emotional transformations in people that do require a certain mature perspective on emotional matters. We also offer Naturopathy courses by correspondence. This course centres on both Eastern and Western approaches to natural medicine and has a strong emphasis on wholefood nutrition, herbal medicine from all over the world, flower essences, Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine and Iridology. For more information on our 5 day course please click here For more information on our Raynor Diploma course please click here For more information on our 15 day Advanced Diploma program please click here

For more information on our Naturopathy program please click here Student Testimonial I have just completed day 3 of the Diploma Course. Words cannot express this experience. Eight years ago I had a crushed L6, I am one of a few that have this, removed, as

well as a stenosis and 2 ruptured discs fused. Since this procedure, I have "protected" this area. If a massage therapist applied any pressure to this area, there was immediate pain radiating to a headache. These past 8 days, Terry Masson, the Instructor for this course has totally changed my thoughts on "processing" pain. My sacral area is no longer painful and tight., I can move about and stretch in a way that I have not been able to for years. Thank you Brandon for having the insight and compassion to create this method of healing. I am also thankful for Terry Masson and his passion for this method of healing and his desire to make a difference in people's lives for the better. I feel very priveledged to be a part of this amazing phenomenom, and cannot wait to start sharing with others the Brandon Raynor Massage! Julia Dearhamer - Bozeman, Montana

• How is it Possible to Train so Quickly? Our school provides you with massage training that incorporates all you need to know to become a professional high quality massage therapist in a series of very intensive short courses. Many massage schools are skeptical about how the Brandon Raynor School of Natural Therapies can train people in such a short period of time. Our answer is simple. Our massage training is hands on, students are not taught in a medical or theoretical way, this is experiential learning. Students learn by demonstration, doing and experiencing. This hands-on, apprenticeship style training develops your actual massage techniques and sense of touch, rather than on classroom theoretical style learning. Within a matter of days people who have had no previous training are able to feel tension in muscles and begin to eliminate it. Experiencing the treatment allows our students to know how it feels to be on the receiving end of a Raynor massage and to adjust their own treatment based on this knowledge. Our courses are intensive and practical, we do not spend time in lectures, pouring over textbooks or preparing for written exams but we will recommend further reading for you and we encourage all of our students to take their ongoing professional development seriously. Our graduates are entitled and encouraged to join INTA, the International Natural Therapists Association. INTA members not only need to sign up to standards of professional behaviour but are linked into this central point for information about ongoing professional development and to keep up to date with massage developments.

• About Brandon Raynor and the massage school

Brandon Raynor School Founder Brandon Raynor, an Australian trained Naturopath, Ayurvedic medicine practitioner and world acclaimed massage training teacher developed the Raynor technique of massage therapy over 20 years of running his own massage practice and from his experience of traveling around the world to study a vast range of massage styles, working with some of the "masters" of massage from different disciplines.
For me the Raynor course was an intensive full-on course which has given me skills which I am already putting to use as a mobile massage therapist for ladies. It has given me a great sense of achievement and was worth doing. It was a struggle for me to complete the 2 weeks but was well worth it.

• About our massage school Our school has a very advanced approach to bodywork training. We have adopted our own unique approach to help our students to learn a very advanced and powerful form of treatment in a simple and down to earth way without overburdening the student with too much theory. Our college's approach is to teach you everything you need to know to become an excellent therapist as quickly as possible.

Raynor massage is a cutting edge massage style that takes the best from the various styles of massage from around the world such as Deep Tissue and Swedish massage, Shiatsu, Thai massage, Reflexology, Rolfing, Therapeutic Massage, Ayurvedic and Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage. We have taken the best techniques from these styles and combined them into one form. In addition to this we have taken many techniques from chiropractic work, physical therapy and yoga and have combined all of these into one form of bodywork treatment called Raynor massage with a simple goal - to find any muscle tension and blocked Chi in the body and to loosen the muscles and open the meridians or energy channels in the body. Our formula for teaching, which has proven so popular for more than 10 years and led us to grow from teaching our courses in our lounge room in Brisbane and Sydney to being a major world wide massage school, is very intensive and very much a hands-on approach. It's massaging, being massaged, or watching the teacher doing a demonstration massage from day 1. Even though our massage is commonly considered the most advanced form of bodywork therapy in the world, it is able to be taught in a very simple and hands on way to enable people to get started as a massage therapist as soon as possible In fact, due to the powerful ability to move the chi in the body and the other techniques incorporated within our technique, many people have commented that what we do is much more than just massage. It is a far more powerful experience than just receiving a normal massage! Student Testimonial I have recently completed the Diploma Course in Auckland, with Peter Maxwell. It has taken me 3 years to have the opportunity to do this course, after looking at

many options I listened to my intuition and applied for the Brandon Raynor one. The last 4 years have been full of ongoing traumatic experiences, from the sudden passing of my lovely dad, and a very dear friend. My amazing mum taken by cancer, a bad business venture that we lost our last 15 years of savings in, and finding out one of our children had been abused. Meeting Peter and Narelle, along with my fellow students was like a new door opening for me. Right from the start, Peter was clear and understanding with his teaching, the hands on learning from day one was great, we were all there for the same reason, to help others. During the 1st week, I experienced a healing release after a massage, it took me until the next day to realise why I felt different, all the anger I had been holding on to had gone, it felt as if it had left an empty space. I could share and talk about the things that had been eating away at me without them upsetting me or making my tummy twist up. During the second week, I had the big one!! After a morning of Reflexology and an afternoon of very firm massage ,the grief I still had all came out, the sadness, the upset, it all came in flows. Peter and Narelle were amazing they advised and helped me through the processing time after, Peter has an incredible ability to teach. He had a very calming effect on us all, a truly special man. The feeling of not having that stagnant Qi is a Life changer, I am now dedicated to help others feel well through Raynor Massage Therapy. To help others through their physical and emotion release. Thank you Brandon for your dedicated work to helping others, and thank you for helping me be a better person. Lynda Gardner Finished massage course in Auckland • Compare us to other Massage Schools! Our approach to massage training is very different to other schools! Most other schools will begin their training with extensive teaching of Latin terms for muscles and test students on these with written exams. There are no written exams with the Raynor Massage's 5-Day and 10-Day Massage Courses.

In standard massage courses it is usually much later into the course when students will be allowed to start massaging in a very basic way, usually getting the students to learn Swedish massage in a very simple general routine. They will then learn therapeutic or remedial massage for several more weeks, and near the end of the course, they will learn a few aspects of deep tissue massage, trigger points, or kinesiology. A few rare courses will also cover some very basic oriental techniques such as Shiatsu, acupressure, or Thai massage. In our massage courses you will be massaging from Day 1 of the course! What we do is take the best and most useful techniques from all the major styles of massage such as Swedish, therapeutic, deep tissue, acupressure, Shiatsu, Thai massage, Ayurvedic massage and Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage. We use the best of these concepts and techniques to use within our very advanced, yet simple to learn, form of therapy called Raynor massage. Brandon Raynor's Naturopathic approach to massage has the consistent and simple philosophy to find any tension in the body and blockages in the chi flow of the body and get rid of them. Raynor massage has the goal of finding every tight muscle in the body and loosening it and uses bodywork and natural healing techniques from across the world to achieve that goal.

• Why is Raynor Massage so good?

The main emphasis in our teaching of massage therapy is to equip the students to feel and find muscle tightness in the body and know how to get rid of it using our unique massage therapy. We train our students to feel tension. The best Shiatsu therapists in Japan, a country with a history of thousands of years of massage, were usually blind, their emphasis is about feeling what the body is telling them. This shows the importance of learning to feel with your hands

rather than see with your eyes or over analyze with your mind and it is this that you will be trained to do on our courses. We teach people to find a tight muscle and then we show the students that muscle tightness does not exist as a single muscle or tight spot but exists as a whole band or meridian of tension that can run from head to toe. Our students learn how one point along a band needs to be loosened in order for the next point to let go, and so on. This makes the style of bodywork we teach a holistic style, emphasizing the inter connectedness of the body, mind and soul. We also demonstrate the Eastern medical approach, that in some people emotional stress can have a physical manifestation and, by getting rid of this physical manifestation, we can alleviate or get rid of that emotional stress. It is this unique style which makes up the core teachings of our school and which you can learn in our 5 day Raynor Massage Certificate Course and our Raynor Massage Diploma Course. The 5 day Raynor Massage Certificate Course is the foundation course for all of our teachings and knowledge of Raynor Massage Therapy. After completing this course, you will be able to do an excellent treatment that could range from a light, gentle, nurturing treatment to a very deep tissue type of massage that will leave your most stressed-out client with the feeling that a whole layer of stress and tension has been lifted from their shoulders.

Our Raynor Massage Diploma Course has the first 5 days of the Certificate Course, plus 5 more days of specific teaching, practical experience and applying our techniques. We include a full day of learning the art of Reflexology, which is

foot or hand massage that has a reflex action on other areas of the body and a full day of Aromatherapy. Aromatherapy oils, which are 100% natural essential oils mixed in with base massage oils, enhance the benefits of the massage experience and we will teach you how to tailor them to the individual client's needs. • Who can attend our courses? Because we keep our terminology easy to understand and we follow teaching methods that make advanced bodywork techniques easy to understand and very hands-on, there are no pre-requisites for the Certificate level massage course. The Diploma course follows on from the Certificate and it is possible to do them at different times by completing the Certificate course and later coming back for the last 5 days of the Diploma course. We design our massage courses to be more mature-age oriented vocational courses. They are designed for people with busy schedules. The classes are great for busy working or family people who don't have time to take years out of their schedule. They are ideal for people who live a long way from a city and don't want to commute every day for years to a large city massage school. We also get a lot of course participants who just don't want to spend a long time learning a basic massage style when a more effective style such as ours can be learned in a much shorter period of time. The majority of participants in the course are aged 18 to 60 and have some experience of life behind them, but we accept students from 16 until 80. There is usually a balance of males and females in most classes. We specifically design our courses for people who want to get started with their new massage career as soon as possible and with as little interruption to their lives. Our courses are designed to have a practical approach to massage training rather than an intellectual approach. The best massage is done from the heart through the hands rather than through the head. We teach massage the way we would have liked to have learned it, without all the filler subjects that many massage schools consider compulsory in their training methods.

Our teacher in Munich, Germany, Craig Burton, demonstrating massage techniques We believe that all massage therapists should be able to deliver high quality treatment. Historically there have been many different approaches to both the practice and teaching of massage. For example, Thailand is world-recognized as a place where massage is a way of life. In both Thai and Hawaiian massage, it is not knowledge of body terms in Latin that makes a good massage therapist, but the spirit of the heart (or Aloha in Hawaiian) which is the prime ingredient of a good massage therapy treatment and the ability to tune into the more subtle aspects of the person. In other words it is all about feeling rather than thinking in these styles. Particularly in the US and Canada, the massage industry has become over regulated in a movement led by those who run more bureacratic type Western style massage schools. Brandon Raynor has been a strong worldwide voice opposing bureaucratic over-regulation of the art of massage therapy knowing that world-wide there is a huge variety of highly effective massage techniques. He led a campaign in 2006 called the Freedom Ride to keep health freedom and deregulate the massage industry in the United States. In almost all the world-wide locations we teach in, graduates of our school will be able to get professional indemnity and malpractice insurance to cover them when they are practicing. They will also be able to join the International Natural Therapies Association, receive a free newsletter, and receive a listing on the INTA website.

We invite you to look through our school's website and contact us with any questions you may have. We are constantly updating our courses and add new classes regularly. We hope you enjoy looking through our website, meanwhile don't just take our word for it, read the testimonials of some of our graduates and feel free to contact them if you have questions, or if you live nearby someone who has been trained by us, visit them for a massage so that you can experience this powerful treatment for yourself!

Student Testimonial from our massage course in London 2008 I have just completed the Raynor Massage Diploma in London, taught by Brandon Raynor, it was the most intensive, most incredible and transformational 2 weeks of my life! I had never studied massage before and booked tentatively knowing how little I knew but attracted by the intensive nature of the course and the slightly quirky video clips online! I had spent 20 years working in education, 16 of these in University lecturing & training teachers and then had worked in the homeless sector. The couple of years running up to the course had been rough and I had begun to have panic attacks, was on anti-anxiety medication and knew that I had to make some real changes in my work and lifestyle. I kept being drawn back to this course and, not even knowing if I would be able to do it, took the plunge and booked. There were 16 of us on the certificate course with 9 staying on for the diploma, a great group of people to work with. The description of 20% tutor input, 40% massaging and 40% being massaged was pretty accurate except that in massaging or being massaged, this also involved tutor input as we were guided through to gain confidence in what we did. Raynor massage is certainly not ˜fluffy" massage where you feel good on the table but back to normal fairly quickly afterwards, being on the table is an active process but for me as the tension was driven out of my muscles, so too was the anxiety and by the end of the first week I had abandoned my medication and have not needed it since. I rediscovered my outrageous side and have never laughed so much, I was a

different person returning home. Since completing the course last week, I have massaged friends and family who have all been surprised by both the strength of the massage and that it was possible for me to learn so much in two weeks. I may not know the Latin names of the muscles I am working on, but I do know how to find tension in a person and then get rid of it. It's that, rather than academic anatomical knowledge that in this massage makes the difference to people. Maureen Abson London Diploma Course

This course centres on both Eastern and Western approaches to natural medicine and has a strong emphasis on wholefood nutrition, herbal medicine from all over the world, flower essences, Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine and Iridology. well as a stenosis and 2 ruptured discs fused.
